I saw somebody say that Gordon Green applied the same mindset as he did to his Halloween trilogy to this, despite them being entirely differently subgenres of horror. The original Exorcist works because of the psychological and emotional aspects of the story, not because of the jumpscares and “lol posessed girls are creepy”

Right this was about a ritual but in order to do the ritual you have to believe…… I wanna see a part too this movie was deeper and went over a lot of ppls heads with the root work and voodoo and the Catholic Church all coming together to do a ritual to bring the demons on the earth it’s a catch 20/20 cus all of the ppl knew except the black father but his belief kept his daughter alive…. Even though everyone else was doing a ritual to summon the demon….. when the priest was trying to get the Catholic Church involved he said we need to do this ritual not this exorcism….. and the black girl was pure so they white girl used her energy I believe she was trained in the church to find a victim thus the church was all in it the pastor was mad when the black girl survived

It's funny how this franchise is called "The Exorcist" but the whole part of the movies is about the "possession" and not about the exorcist himself. That's what makes the first movie great and original.

The moment i knew Blumhouse, David Gordon Green, and Danny McBride are involved in this movie following their disastrous Halloween trilogy, i absolutely lost hope. Hollywood should stop giving Green horror franchises to ruin. If he wants to make a horror movie then make his own original material rather than rehash old stuff and just squanders it like that. He gave us very good new low budget movies and opportunities for new creators making new movies. He has a good business model for making a profit, especially in horror. The part that really bugs me is this (and I’ll admit it might be a nitpick). It’s the Chris MacNeil writing the book thing. Chris would NEVER do that. Chris went to the priests because she was TERRIFIED about what would happen once it got out that regan was culpable in the death of Burke dennings. Telling the story of what happened to regan is basically admitting that regan’s hands (though demonically forced) killed Burke dennings and that is something Chris would never do.

In the first Exorcist novel the thought of anyone finding out about Regan & Burke Dennings is the impetus to go to the priest and people finding out was her biggest fear. If Chris gave even a tiny clue as to the timeline of events it’s not that much of a stretch to think someone would piece it together. The book thing is bad writing. Sorry.

Apparently Universal HAD to promise a trilogy in order to secure the rights, and they had to get Peacock to agree to do the sequels if need be in order to promise that the sequels would be made one way or another (considering Peacock’s involvement in the deal and the fact that this was before the streaming bubble began to burst, $400 million is not all that shocking (if still ridiculous)).

WAIT! Dan, you’re right about the horror nights thing! Back in 2016, it was the highest rated haunted house by guests and brought in a ton of the religious Hispanic community in LA. Morgan Creek really SHOULD have just tried to revive the 2016-2017 FX series. FX cancelling it after two seasons was a huge mistake. That show was how to follow-up a classic excellently. Outside that, only the original 1973 film, Exorcist 3 (1990), and Dominion-Prequel To The Exorcist (2005) are worth seeing.

God, I enjoyed this. It's true to say that you shouldn't judge a film without seeing it but also, you know, fool me four times... I'm done with supporting this kind of movie, where even the concept is lazy. The trailers did zero to distinguish the movie from (insert low budget Exorcism film at the bottom of the Prime Video barrel). And that "body and the blood" clip is laughable. The repetition horror trope should have ended with "you'll float too". I rarely actively wish for failure when it comes to entertainment but somebody needs to learn a lesson here.

I know the “maybe they paid all that money for the rights to keep making Exorcist Halloween Horror Nights houses” but you’re not really far off. Universal views the IP market as being the largest pulls for the event. Disney essentially won’t allow any of their legacy IP acquired from the Fox deal to be used at the event and Warner Bros has made it exceptionally difficult to use any of their properties as well. Since these huge legacy IPs drive casual fans to the event (and their growing scarcity as competitors buy them up) I think it does factor into some form of decision making.

So, they decided to destroy Chris MacNeil, the same way they destroyed Laurie Strode, eh? Do these guys have mommies issues? The character of Laurie Strode had the IQ, solid upbringing and resourcefulness to cope with her trauma and live a normal enough life - as in Halloween H2O but they decided to completely annihilate her - make freak out of her. The character of Chris MacNeil most certainly had the emotional resources to carry on without being destroyed too. This team has no idea what a compelling story is. They need to stick to brutalist, over the top humor. You couldn't pay me to watch this movie but I am interested in hearing reviews.

Not as bad as you say but definitely not great. The dialogue doesn’t get bad until the Exorcism imo. It wants to be too respectable of a movie until the ending when the Exorcism stuff starts going down. The Burstyn stuff is cringy as hell though. I really liked the girls though. Just not enough time with them because the movie is too preoccupied with trying to be a good movie at the same time. Should have just went ham with it as they do in a couple of scenes. Other than those scenes it didn’t really feel like an exorcist film at all.

The Exorcist was the second scariest movie I've ever seen. The only scarier movie I ever saw was The Wizard of Oz. Seriously, I found the Wicked Witch of the West TERRIFYING as a very young child, While my father took me to see many age-inappropriate films as a kid, The Exorcist was fortunately not one of them. I saw Exorcist II the Heretic on a late late movie when I was a teenager. That was truly awful. I liked Exorcist III quite a bit. I watched most of the first season of The Exorcist TV show with Geena Davis before dropping off. ***SPOILER WARNING*** After the big reveal that Geena Davis was actually playing Regan all grown up with a changed name to avoid publicity because her mom wrote a book about her exorcism, I really thought it was a shame her role wasn't played by Linda Blair. I suppose the reveal would have been less of a surprise, but it would have still been cooler. Sharon Glass played her mom in the TV show and was fine, but it would have been better with Ellen Burstyn.

Lol you too? That wicked witch really got me as well: the particular part in the tornado, morphing from the bicycle to the broomstick, and in black and white. That was soooo disturbing for my young mind. The only time I've ever had a movie nightmare was about 50 years ago: Leonard Nimoys in search series: in search of Dracula. In it there was shown the few seconds of Max Shreks creeping shadow from the 1922 Nosferatu, years before I saw the movie. Just so creepy... I'd like to say I loathe exorcist II, however a) had Richard Burton so still utter shite movie but it had Richard Burton. B) had some really good little ideas, but completely wasted. I mean the fact that the now recovered Regan has this automatic ability to heal. What a really, really interesting idea: that went absolutely nowhere. Shame there's not more of that kind of thoughts in these movies, just add more jumpscares, yeah: really thought provoking...

Why give him this after the last two Halloween movies? Look what JJ Abrams to Star Trek and then they gave him Star Wars to run into the ground. I guess a lot of it is - quoting Swan from Phantom of the Paradise - "I abhor perfection in anyone besides myself".

I was so hyped for Halloween 2018 that I actually watched the film on Halloween night, with my costume on. I left so utterly disappointed that it almost ruined my night. I gave Halloween Kills a chance and I regreted it. Whatever David Gordon Green does, I'm just staying away. He does not get what made those original films so great, he just doesn't.

The studios are looking more and more like bad poker players. They don't have any good plan or cards, then say "let's try to fool everyone and go all in!" (400 millions for a dead franchise, 700 millions for a fantasy spin off that can't use any original stories ) only they used this move too many times and nobody is buying their trick. And they do it over and over because they have no clue on how to attract the public. It feels like the beginning of the end

Dan, I appreciate your open disdain for these cynical money grabs exploiting iconic titles. Imo, Blumhouse/Universal and who ever takes future ownership of "The Exorcist" franchise should just rerelease the film every Halloween season. If they have to make new content to keep the franchise, maybe make an accompanying anthology of shorts related to the exorcist themes. Horror anthologies were really fun back in the day.

The clip from Star Wars was perfect, and I personally hated the 2nd two installments to the 2018 Halloween, so I love the thought process you had and the way that you addressed the director and studios choices in terms of how they're handling these properties... I live in Orlando and I go to the houses. I did the house watched the movie and did the house again. It changed how I saw it and it’s not a bad or good movie same with house, lines are long. If they included what happened in the house… in the movie… they would of had a different movie All together

1:44 and later in the movie she says “we’ve met before” No, the demon was Pazuzu in the original, and in the credits of this movie the demon is named lamashtu, so you can’t even justify her appearance on a her and the demon interact with each other again argument.

As for play it safe legacy rehashes go, The Force Awakens made over $2 billion at the box office. Halloween 2018 made $250 million on a $15 million dollar budget. It's a short sighted strategy that makes a big profit but quickly burns out the franchise. But audience tastes are being taken for granted as well, If The Nun can make $200 million then I gotta say tastes aren't exactly improving.

Remaking a classic is foolish. No one has ever been able to capture the atmosphere and style which made these movies great. Second, why not remake bad movies so that they are good instead of attempting to remake a beloved classic and ruining it?
