The ship they escape in is a gunship Frigate. It has less armor and fewer weapons than the Donnager. But it is smaller and more maneuverable. Also, they're exit vector would have placed the Donnager's explosion between them and the remaining attack ships to hide their drive plume.

Also, you see the Canterbury's shuttle, the "Knight," get shredded in the foreground by the PDCs on the Tachi as they're trying to blast their way out of the hangar bay. It's the pyramid-shape that just flies to pieces as the 40mm PDC rounds sweep through.

Lopez wasn't exactly dying from bullet wounds there at the end. The problem is the G-forces that the 'maximum burn' will put on his body as the Tachi escapes, literally making him bleed out faster. He knows his chance of surviving the burn with open wounds is slim.

Even though Shed's death is dramatic and unexpected, as is Lopez's death, the destruction of the Donnanger, and Havelock's "resurrection," the real reason this episode is so great is because of the introduction of the ship at the end.

Remember this story was originally a role-playing game. The story we've been told by the two creators is that of the four original players of their game, the player for Shed dropped out, so they killed off the character in the game, and killed him off in the story as well. One of the creators was an assistant to George RR Martin (Game of Thrones) at the time...the rumor is that Martin was that player who dropped out. Amos thanked Naomi for being a good person and helping him out. Naomi didn't get a chance to say goodbye to someone. Because Mars is the "red planet," red means "good guy" to Martians. Earth is a blue planet, so blue means "bad guy" to Martians. When a Mars ship goes into combat, their "red alert" is actually a "blue alert." Their ship lights turn blue when they go into combat. Johnson's viewpoint is that the OPA is for human rights. The Martian's and Earthers' viewpoint is that the OPA is a terrorist organization. This episode sold me on the display of realistic physics. Yes, this series is great for re-watching because there are soooooooo many Chekov's Guns and clues to future events. Joe is also interesting to watch as the episode progresses to crisis points and he's just sitting there grinning.

I'd like to suggest that this was not exactley one sided... as far as we know at this point *all* attackers are lost, the last with the MCRN Donnager when she goes down. Also: the MCRN Tachi is note exactely a life boat... it's a light frigate, note the 40cm PDCs Alex uses to blow the attackers into fine pieces. This episode was meant to establish the rules of combat in the series. No fancy stuff, no phasers, no shields, no inertial dampers. Railguns that shoot metal slabs at very high speeds, missiles and point defense cannons that shoot projectiles. It's fun that it's grounded in reality so stuff makes sense by default because everything obeys the laws of physics. Keep an eye out for the little details, they're really rewarding. That binder they used to plug the hole was titled "Safety Manual". 😆

21:32 _"I don't understand why they don't try to blow up the escape shuttle"_ Their ammunition is especially designed to be able to penetrate human bodies, including light body armor, but not ship walls. It would be a very bad idea to shoot around with ammunition that can put holes in a ship hull inside pressurised spacecrafts. Their ammunition is also self-propelled, otherwise it would be quite an experience to fire arms in zero G. Also, the Tachi is not just an "escape shuttle", it's a fully equipped, state-of-the-art Martian gunship. The Donnager is a huge battleship, almost 500m long, has a crew of over 2000, and can carry several Tachi-type frigates and destroyers in its shuttle bays, while the Tachi itself is designed for a crew of up to about 30 people iirc.

Great reaction! Joe was in full "Cheshire Cat" mode through most of the episode. Shed is dead because he lost his head 😵. WRT Lopez: The Expanse may be the best show *ever* at giving the audience minor, one to two episode characters who can have a deep impact on the story. All of the time that you're spending now learning about the culture, politics and even the relative economic statuses of the factions pays off in spades as the series progresses. When a new character is introduced, you understand their perspective because you really know the world they live in. It's fascinating.

The Tachi is not "a shuttle." It is a frigate-class gunship, and capable or withstanding all of the small-arms fire that can be deployed. This isn't really how it's presented in the backstory we get in the books but I always think that the culture of Mars and it's relationship and attitude to Earth and Earthers make a lot of sense if it originally began as a colonisation project masterminded by weird supremacist billionaires with an Atlas Shrugged complex. It will become clear through the series that Earth is far from uniformly privileged. Belt colonisation on the other hand seems to have been more of a free-for all (you'll learn a bit about the events that precipitated this later) leading to the corporate no-man's-land/"no laws, just cops" situation you've seen so far. My theory is also that the original proto-Belter stock came disproportionately from what are now middle-income countries: people who would have had the baseline of capital and access to education to become space-miners but without the safety net to avoid becoming trapped in that situation inter-generationally.

I wish people would stop saying "this episode is a banger" or "this is important" to new reactors. The whole point of a new reaction is that they're discovering the show themselves. It doesn't hit as hard if they know what to expect. Telling people what's important and what isn't is a low-level spoiler, because you're basically outlining the show's themes before they even happen. You're taking away the element of surprise, which is one of the best things about this show. You just never know which direction it's going to go next. It's okay if people miss details if they can still be surprised.
@Yannakis1999

Completely agree, as well as when people warn that episode X and Y should be seen together. Let the reactor discover the clifthangers by themselves. Or when someone says that one character is great, they are spoiling that, no matter the danger, it's going to survive.

let's be 100% clear about that horrifically abused word "Spoiler". Perhaps you have forgotten BASIC ENGLISH DEFINITION: something is literally only "spoiled" if it is 100% ruined. I've come to accept this is just the nature of following reaction channels. People are excited about their favorite shows and want to express that. @@ZakhadWOW I politely disagree with that take. I have followed pretty much every Expanse reaction channel and watched every number of "spoiler" being dropped. And without fail every time the people who drop these spoilers have literally nothing else of interest to say. So they say the lowest hanging fruit and think they're being clever.
@madux42

Agree. It's in the same category as those "This is my favority character!!" comments right after a new character is introduced. I understand it's coming from their excitement and they don't think too much about it, but it's actually a spoiler as it gives that character some kind of plot-armor, at least for a while, and some importance before they even become important. Sometimes it gets even worse like "This is my favority character for all seasons". I wish people would be more aware of these kind of spoiling.

The Expanse does occasionally do 'time dilation,' but generally in the reverse: it plays slightly fast and loose with travel times between astral bodies more than anything (or glosses over long travel times). This episode captures the time scale of a long-range engagement. Yes, you launch missiles at each other and the missiles take time to reach their targets. Space is BIG, and delayed engagement is a part of that.

Exactly, and that's why they call it "Hammerlock," when the ships get close enough that the defense computers don't have time to react to an incoming round from a railgun. At that point, it's a bloody slug-fest as the railguns from each ship just rip through the other. No magical defense shields. No magical gravity plating. Armor designed to stop shrapnel and PDC rounds, but not thick enough (because of the mass it would require) to stop explosives and railgun rounds.

Hey middle guy, if you ever need a phrase, try: I will neither confirm nor deny, but I do know the answer to that question” lol 😅 But again again, I hope you all try KSP. Though would be fun to watch! Especially an orbital rendezvous! And secondarily, to see what is needed to get the far away planets. 😊

Bit of a rough edit. Several audio/video episode desyncs as well as reaction/episode desyncs. And then even the famous CLANG was silent. 😢Oh well. Hope these things will improve going forward. Enjoy the ride.

They absolutely will! Had to do some makeshift editing for this due to some audio hiccups, episode 6+ has proper audio without this occurring. For the desyncs I'm sorry about that, everything you seen on this channel is my first attempts editing so it will improve as we go. I appreciate it. The clang went silent because it came through our audio, not the source, as we had a discussion or someone was talking. But for future episodes the mics don't even pickup the audio from the TV anymore so this won't occur! I appreciate all the comments with this though that are polite and don't attack us. It helps to improve so in the future we won't have to worry as I get better with edits! -Mikey

The low life expectancy on Eros has to do with poverty, not gravity. Eros & Mars have roughly the same gravity----.3-.38 Earth gravity. Mars just happens to have much better health care, nutrition & less exposure to radiation/toxins.

Got it! The gravity being the same is interesting

@@732ReviewCrew Not entirely true - Gravity on Ceres (and Eros) is due to the rotation of the asteroid (centrifugal force). "Gravity" at the inner surface of the asteroid would be around 1/3rdG but as you move "up" towards the center it would get less, and the colaris effect would be more pronounced, probably leading to head spins if you moved to fast. The poorer less desirable parts of the station would be towards the center.

@@blackpaw29 Also, Ceres is just one spot. Most belters are miners who spend all their time out rock hopping in zero G.
@madux42

It's both. Because of the lower gravity, they have health issues (like bones-density), and because the poverty, they cannot afford the good medicine like the Martians have. Now that's for Ceres, where they have 0.3 G spin-gravity, it get's even worse for the majority of Belters who spend most of their life in microgravity, on smaller non-spinning stations/asteroids, or on ships.

Why don’t they blow up the escape shuttle: point is they could, but that would mean the guns they’d be using would also be able to destroy the Donnager, the ship currently carrying them. Guns in this universe are such that if you miss the shot you don’t blow a hole in your ship, just on the meat in front of you.

+ the overall size of the ship they escape on is 46 or so meters in length, it's not a small vessel. Would be hard to destroy with the hand held weapons the attacking "Blue Visor" guys have.

High velocity metallic projectiles are a NO NO in space. THis is why Star Trek uses phasers, and Babylon 5 uses PPG (Phased Plasma Gun)

It's hard to listen to the theory crafting when you already know what's going to happen. 😅 it's OK though. I enjoy watching Expanse reactions so I can "rewatch" the show with commentary.

I agree as an avid viewer of reactions sometimes the theories being off is the fun part but when the reactors nail a theory somehow, it's so much fun watching the pieces come together and then them realizing! I can't wait to finish The Expanse to see how other reactors did this show! -Mikey
