Lopez had suffered massive internal injuries, going uner a High G burn would have been a death sentence for him. He knew when he ordered it that he was doomed. That is why he gave control of the ship to all those on board. That is why he said to Holden 'I would have liked to have seen an ocean on Mars' because he knew he would now never see one.

The important thing to keep in mind is that you, the viewer, know only what characters know, and they never know everything. They also don't reveal what they know (except Holden of course), and are often wrong. There's no black-and-white morality, all characters have motivations and goals that make sense from their POV, experience and information they can verify. But often they have questionable ways and morals. Just because someone opposes the main characters, it doesn't automatically mean they are villains.
@kirkdarling4120
@kirkdarling4120 2 жыл бұрын
Those are important points. Unlike most shows, we only know what at least one character knows...although sometimes the show reveals information that the characters (and we the audience) won't know is significant until later. The character missed it, and so did we. And yes, sometimes they are wrong, and we don't know they're wrong until they discover they're wrong.

There's a load of detail from the books that doesn't really make it into the show. The thing with the coffee is related to the nature of where food comes from. The books regularly talk about food and much of it is ersatz replicas of things originating from Earth cuisine; meat that's actually fungus, or stuff that's grown in vats and starts turning into mush once it starts to go cold. The idea that "good" coffee is a rare thing is one of the few bits of that which gets into the show. With regards Lopez, he was shot up at the end of the last episode and knew he wasn't going to make it which is the reason he transferred control to Holden. Gravity and thrust are also recurring topics in the books along with the short- and long-term effects of them. There are plenty of references to things snapping back into place after a hi-g burn, the discomfort caused, and the need/effects of the "juice" used to help the body survive such maneuvers. Had they not, out of necessity, had to execute such a burn, they could possibly have saved him but the high g forces involved basically finished the job the bullets started.

Both of these things are neat... Yes, the hat FINALLY came in for some good. There is a KZbin channel that one of the writers (Ty Frank, used to work for George R.R. Martin...back in the day) of the books as James S.A. Corey (is really a writing team of Ty Frank and Daniel Abraham) has and the actor that plays Amos Burton (Wes Chatham) has...that explains a lot of the behind the scenes and the motivations for the series. It is called The Expanse After Show. They started it during lockdown...and they have a lot of fun with it. Just telling you about it...but I'd not watch it till later, but it is where a LOT of the fans get the BTS of why and how things were done from book to adaptation...which is really cool to hear. Love this show and also love the books. So many great stories. They really have tried to ground as much as possible in reality.

Remember this is a nine-book story that has already been completely told. So as they produced the series, they could foreshadow events that won't occur for several more books. The great thing, though, is that you know they're not making it up as they go along and satisfactory conclusions to the plot lines already exist (because the book readers are grinning from ear to ear). Something inherent in Martian attitudes was revealed here: Captain Yao wasn't satisfied with Holden merely stating that Mars did not destroy the Canterbury. She wanted to pile on the story that Naomi and the OPA was responsible. The simple truth wasn't good enough, "let's pick out someone in particular we don't like to take the blame." When the prostitute Gia was with Havelock in the hospital room, they showed her perform a particular gesture: She placed two fingers on her lips and pressed those fingers to Havelock. That "two fingers to the lips" gesture also appears in the video where Julie knocks down the dock worker...he throws that gesture to her as she walks away. That's the Belter equivalent of blowing a kiss. They don't explain it, but you'll see it again. I would think that Gia wouldn't have bothered visiting him in the hospital if she had been responsible for his being there. Amos is not dumb, as is being revealed. He's an advanced rocket mechanic, after all. Yes, the ship is AI. There is a lot of AI embedded in the technology of this show, it just doesn't talk back. The ship recognized Lopez and his authority to give full access to the the others on it. Then the ship recognized the individuals (remember they have ID chips) and accessed the data the Martians already had on them. So it knew their backgrounds and likely roles. It also knows how to parse specific commands out of their general conversations with each other, and who ought to have authority to give specific commands. So, AI, yeah. Fans of The Expanse call ourselves the "Screaming Firehawks," so you know now where that name comes from. You know now that "sherpa" is Ceres underworld slang for "data broker." The data broker's "space Tinder" tagline had been "I'll be your sherpa." It's interesting how Fred Johnson, the Butcher of Anderson Station who had killed many innocent Belters, could have become an OPA leader.

It's not stated explicitly, but blowing up the Donnager isn't just to kill the attack ships and give Holden a chance to escape. Remember that the Donnager was the flagship of the Mars Navy. It likely had equipment and codes not on other vessels. The captain can't risk a damaged ship falling into enemy hands. The self-destruct protects countless other Martian lives, both military and civilian.

My theory on why Havelock survived as long as he did: You said he shoulda bled out, I disagree. Hear me out. You know how they always say that if someone gets stabbed, you should leave the knife in, otherwise they'd bleed out faster? Well, that's true. But when human tissues sustain trauma, they swell up. Imagine now that for every organ and layer of skin the spike went through, the swelling sealed up that part of the organ/skin from bleeding by grabbing onto the spike -- swelling around it. As if the spike itself is doing the job of a stopper keeping things from leaking. Before the swelling completely went away, he was found and since medicine is more advanced, they were able to save him. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! ;-]
@IdleCommentator
@IdleCommentator 2 жыл бұрын
There is also another important aspect to it - Ceres in general has lower gravity than Earth, even after all the engineering done to it. The area Havelock went to it is one of the poorer parts of the station, closer to the center of Ceres, which results in even lower gravity. This, in turn, means significantly less damage to internal organs from being impaled with a spike compared to Earth.

@@scottdorfler2551 The referred events in s03 are not relevant, because they happened in zero-G, which is a bit different from lower gravity of Ceres station. Also the more pressing problem in this situation is damage to internal organs from the spike itself, rather than internal bleeding.

Hi, I'm really enjoying your insights and your reactions, The Expanse is my best-loved show and I'm so glad to see you getting hooked by it! If you notice, before Miller goes into Tech Noir to ask about the Sherpa, he tosses out the hand terminal Anderson Dawes gave to him. The one that showed him were Filat Kothari (the man who almost killed Havelock) was hiding out. There Miller makes the choice to abandon revenge and continue the search for Julie Mao. He even stares at her photo before entering, for what I'm sure is the 50th time. He just can't shake it. For me it's also symbolic of his growing changes from a hard case crooked detective working for earth... into a Betler. The Belter he was born to be, the one that Anderson Dawes can see under his ridiculous hat.

This is one of my favorite episodes because things settle down a little bit and you get some important character moments. Even if you don't know what's important about them, you get a lot of information that'll sit in the back of your mind a while, and later you'll see how clever the writers were dropping little seeds here and there. This show is really good about earning its various twists and turns. They never really come entirely out of nowhere. But the clues are hidden very well so you're rewarded for paying attention.

One of the reasons I love this series is the economy of the writing. There may be scenes that do not seem to relate to others or get resolved yet, many episodes later, they are resolved- often in surprising ways. Also the characters are fully rounded, with flaws and hidden secrets. Someone who may appear to be a villian turns out to be a hero and others turn the opposite. As for Rocinante, it is the name of Don Quixote's horse- and the reason Holden chose it will become apparent in a future episode.

While the miners and workers based out of Anderson Station may have been morally right in their actions, what they did was still illegal. Anderson Station was located on the opposite side of the belt from main hubs like Ceres, and the region it was in was one of the sparsest regions of the belt. Anderson Station served as a transport hub for that region of the belt. Anderson Station had a population of about 10,000. Gustav Marconi, the Anderson-Hyosung Cooperative Industries Group (A-HCIG) administrator in charge of Anderson Station, imposed a 3% handling surcharge for all shipments passing through Anderson Station, an act which would affect more than a million in their region of the belt. This was done to raise the bottom line on Anderson Station. About 50,000 of those affected lacked the resources to cover for the increased costs to air, water, etc and many had to limit their own air supply, which in turn led to hypoxic brain injuries in their children. Off topic for a moment here, but here in the UK something similar has occurred with regards to the elderly covering increased costs during the cold winter months. Forced to chose between eating or heating some would actually suffer medical problems, including death, because of those impossed choices. One of the 'benefits' of milder winters is a reduction in the numbers of elderly having to face these life and death situations. So this episode brings back some bad memories for me, as it has a frighteningly real world parallel, in which family friends actually suffered and even died. Complaints were filed with A-HCIG but the company were unsympathetic to these claims. They refused to provide medical aid to those affected, and even denied that such medical issues existed. In response to this about 170 belters armed themselves and seized control of Anderson Station. During the takeover Gustav Marconi was ejected from an airlock. They made demands that the UN Government take action against A-HCIG for the poor treatment of their workers. Because those ~170 were holding hostages, and had 'executed' the station administrator, A-HCIG branded them terrorists and asked the UN for help dealing with the situation. Marama Brown, the spokesperson for the insurgents claims that the death of Marconi was an accident, but Gero states that "we should have dumped a few more bosmang into space when we had the chance", suggesting that it wasn't an accident. Whatever the truth is, the fact remains that someone put him in an airlock, sealed the inner door, and opened the outer door, causing Marconi to die due to a lack of air. Poetic justice or cold blooded murder is a matter of perspective. The UN, in response to the A-HCIG request, sent a force which blockaded the station and demanded the surrender of the insurgents. After a four day standoff, the insurgents tried to surrender but they were being jammed, and their tight beam signal to the UNN force was also cut off. As a result the UNN force did not recieve the surrender notification. They attacked killing 173 insurgents and >1000 civilians. Despite the jamming the insurgents were able to broadcast the attack beyond Anderson Station. Which is why Fred Johnson is known as The Butcher of Anderson Station. However he was unaware that a surrender had been issued, and he carried out his orders accordingly. Again, going a little off topic here, if you think Fred Johnson was out of line, consider a real world parallel, the 1980 Iranian embassy siege in London. Once Abbas Lavasani was killed by the hostage takers the military was given a green light. The police continued to talk to the hostage takers but the decision had been made and control had been handed to the military. During the seventeen minute assault, one hostage was killed, and two more were wounded by hostage takers. Five hostage takers were killed and one captured. One of the killed hostage takers had been in the process of readying a grenade to use on the hostages. Two more were, according to hostage reports, trying to surrender when they were killed, but an inquest into their deaths returned a verdict of justifiable homicide. In the Massacre of Anderson Station, once the insurgents had killed Marconi, and the military had been brought in, it was already too late for them, particulary once they refused to surrender to the military. Once the operations commander gave the green light there was no stopping it. After the Massacre of Anderson Station, the station itself never resumed operations. This forced those in that area who relied on Anderson Station for supplies, like air and water, to get those supplies eslewhere. Now without a local transport hub, which is what Anderson Station was, it probably caused a significant increase to the costs of getting those supplies. In other words, the fact that Anderson Station was shut down and therefore there was no longer a handling surcharge, they still had to pay more for their essential supplies and therefore continued to suffer after the fact. The result being that those who couldn't afford the Anderson Station 3% handling surcharge wouldn't be able to afford the increased transport costs incurred due to there being no local transport hub. Regardless of whether you support the plight of the Belters who were suffering due to the 3% handling surcharge, nothing justifies an armed attack and the killing of another person. An armed takeover is an illegal act. Killing someone during an armed takeover is an illegal act, even if it was an accident (either murder or manslaughter). Imposing a 3% handling surcharge is not an illegal act, even if it is morally wrong and leads to the suffering of some.

One day, Colonel Fred Johnson will be hailed as a hero to the system. One day, he will meet a desperate man in possession of a stolen spaceship and a deadly secret and extend a hand of friendship. But long before he became the leader of [..beeeeeep..], Fred Johnson had a very different name. The Butcher of Anderson Station. This is his story. I think the summary of the novel says it all.

You've got to the point in the show...that you either "get it" or not. If anyone gets to THIS episode and isn't hooked...this may not be the show for them. BUT, we're glad that you are IN. Lopez transferred all the codes to them (the four survivors of The Canterberry)...so he didn't feel that he was going to live the hard burn away from The Donnager. Sad to say goodbye, 'cause he was starting to get interesting, but...in a show...when they start to talk about big plan (in the future), they usually don't live out the film (or episode). What to think about Fred Johnson? He definitely has a checkered past. Infamous, as The Butcher of Anderson Station. Yikes! The dynamic of the crew of the NOW Rocinante. Holden (Earther), Naomi (Belter), Amos (not clear at this moment) and Alex (Martian). Four very different people with widely varied personalities and pasts...having to work together. There is an online presence of fans of the show called the Screaming Firehawks, just to let you know. Also, the fandom is incredibly kind...and most (if not all) want to preserve the mystery and the secrets of the show...allowing new viewers (like yourself) to experience the show for yourself. Thank you SO much for your reactions. BTW, Marie and I have downloaded Season 1 again...and also watching ANOTHER reactor (Nikki and Steven)...'cause one episode a week has been hard for us. You pulled us back in...and we just needed MORE. We will be starting our latest rewatch in the next day or so (hopefully). You are doing really well on the mystery that is unravelling before you. Keep going. Make your theories. As always, thank you for a very entertaining watch with you. Cannot wait for the next drop of your reactions for this show. Talk to you, soon.

25:36 I think you are forgetting or not realizing about Fred Johnson. Stay tuned this is The Expanse, where everyone is a hero or a villain. Or they change roles, iIt just depends on the episode. Even Naomi. Despite this Butcher nickname, he runs Tycho Station, a Belter (OPA?) shipyard. This means in the 11 years since, he has done enough things to turn this around that the Belters accept him as administrator even though he did it and he's an Earther. He is not loved by Earther's either. Remember the Mormon Elders didn't like him much either. Because of his reputation or is there more?

"Remember the Cant." The typical Belter probably could not care less about the day to day politics between Earth and Mars (except that whatever dirt gets stirred up between those two almost always gets flung in the face of Belters, somehow). So, the main specific reason Joe/Jane Sixpack Belter would waste a second thought on who (either Mars, Earth, or somebody else) blew up the Canterbury is that the Canterbury was an ice-hauler. Remember, no one in the Belt has any natural access to water, two things that humans cannot live more than a few days (water) or a few minutes (air) without. Huge natural deposits of ice are found in places like Saturn's moons, which are relatively close to The Belt. Bringing enormous quantities of ice in from there is the closest natural occurring resource for creating air and water for the Belt. (Making water from ice is pretty obvious, but remember that water is vital for plants too. Plants make oxygen. (Also, water is technically H2O, so you could break down its component atoms and get oxygen that way, but I think the Belters just use plants for that, same as it is on Earth)). When The Canterbury blew up, a major supply of ice (eg. air and water) for the Belt vanished. Rationing immediately went into effect, which is a clinical way of saying a lot more Belters were going to die, because a vital resource just went kaput. The protests were primarily over that situation. When Holden broadcast that "Mars blew up the Canterbury," the Belters now had a face to direct their ire toward. Holden specifically claimed Mars blew up the Canterbury, but some Belters (like those that align with hardcore OPA) see all "Inners" (humans from either Mars or Earth) as culpable for the destruction of the Canterbury. So, that's why that one dude skewered Havelock to the wall, and then said, "Remember the Cant." ------- Lopez died after sustaining rib fractures from being shot on the Donnager. Once he was on the escape vessel, with Holden and friends, they needed to do a “high burn” (go really really fast) to clear the Donnager when it self-destructed. Doing a high burn means high g-forces on the body. The ship injects the crew with drugs so they won’t pass out from the g-forces constricting their blood vessels. But, in Lopez’s case, it also meant that his fractured ribs would be pushed into his internal organs, basically it’s being stabbed to death by sharp broken bones. Pretty terrible way to go. What’s more, right before they went into high burn, Lopez said, “It would’ve been nice to see an ocean on Mars.” He knew that he wouldn’t survive the high burn required for them to get away. But his mission was to lead the Cant survivors off the Donnager, in order to report what really happened to them.

"They [almost] killed Havelock and said 'Remember the Cant'..." To the Belter masses, Earth and Mars are essentially the same entity: "Inners", "well wallas", planet-dwellers. Those guys attacked Havelock because he was both an Inner and an authority figure, to them a representative of the oppressors.

The gravity in the expanse is generated by spin or acceleration. High burn means high gravity, which is no good for humans, specially if you are already badly hurt. Regarding Fred Anderson. In the flashback, 11 years ago, he was a UN coronel. Now he is a working in Tyco station and the Mormons were saying, they had concern to keep him in charge, due to his ties to the OPA.

What I liked about this episode was that the crew came together and they have a ship now and are deciding their own fate. It's interesting how we see each crew member moving into their new home. Holden, Amos, and Alex are settling in easily but Naomi, who's never had anything this comfortable and functional probably feels very out of place on it. The ship does have an AI of sorts, in it's systems. Nothing that's going to be like the Enterprise computer. The Anderson Station scene with the bodies floating was heartbreaking.

TV Anderson Station and Short Story Anderson Station are quite different. In the short story, the actual squater/terrorist are open for compromise, but the UN Negotiation team want an unconditional surrender. Col Johnson don't know how the negotiations were going. He got telled they failed, that he should move in and he expectes heavy resistance. In the end there were only lightly armed belters without armor and quite a lot ieds. And after that Johnson is quite devasted, which is one of the reasons he ends up with the opa.

A lot of it didn't make sense... Until it started to make sense... If that makes any sense? _you have found the core of watching this show_ Holden said something to the effect of "if we aren't heard from again, if they destroy us, that will confirm they were responsible" You hope Holden can recant the lines which led to " *re*member the *cant* " I find that strangely satisfying to hear that. It's been a decade since Fred Johnson was the "Butcher of Anderson Station" referencing previous statements that "people can change" No one knew Alex was a 20 year MCRN veteran until the Donnager. If you'd lived 10 years with the burden on you that in "following orders" you wiped out thousands of people including children. Would you potentially feel the need to make some semblance of "making amends" ?

Lopez got shot up a bit on the run to the airlock. Johnson was in shock at the carnage. It's why he left the UN Marines and joined the OPA. The action in the show does take a few eps to get up to steam, but I appreciated the character work and world-building. It pays off as you go forward. This show was the best sci-fi in 20+ years. It also does some of the best realized, most believable 3D characters I've ever seen. NTM one of the only shows or movies that does diversity right. Rocinante was the name of Don Quixote's horse.

Havelock's injury is not really life threatening even with today's medicine. My hospital has pulled rebar out of two peoples' chests since I've worked here, both were completely fine after wound closure and healing. When punctured like that you will likely bleed very little/not at all due to the swelling around the object. The rebar was obviously way below his heart, which means the only real danger to Havelock would be a collapsed lung, which it looks like he probably did suffer (gasping for breath when the woman found him), but again, even with today's medical standards we could fix that without too much fuss.

I mean, an inch to the side and it obliterates his heart. Plus, most movies and shows code injuries the same. Grazes, light wounds, heavy wounds, and fatal injuries generally go in the same spots. Upper chest wound usually means death. Thankfully, some works (like THE EXPANSE or BLACK HAWK DOWN) push back against these tropes. Because, in real life, wounds to the leg can be fatal and chest wounds can be survived.

About the "blue thing" and them showing it for a bit but not explaining anything about it and then never showing it again...... Think,......Game of Thrones......and the White Walkers/Wights in Season 1 They don't (it doesn't) matter............... ........just yet. At least at this point in the story. What's important for you to know is that it's there, even though just in the background for the moment and that it's a thing. The story at this point is still mostly just about world-building and setting the pieces before everything else eventually begins to fall into place Trust me, you'll appreciate all the work they're currently doing in setting the table in Season 1, which often gets criticised and being "slow" and less interesting than the other seasons following. Everything they set up now DOES pay off in later seasons.
