The OPA is not really a single organization. It is the Outer Planets Alliance. They are a loose conglomeration of different cells. Fred Johnson is leader of one cell, Anderson Dawes is leader of a different one. There are other groups as well. All of them consider themselves part of the OPA even though there is a rivalry between some of them.

Diogo's uncle (Diogo Harari is the Belter kid who was stealing water on Ceres and then was thrown off his uncle's ice hauler,) knew that they were going to die. The people who boarded them left them without water or enough fuel to get back to their base so they Diogo and Uncle would have died.) The uncle thought Diogo had a chance of being found since he had a beacon on him and chose to blow up the ship rather than die a slow painful death.

The disguise for the Rocinante is mostly just to change the silhouette of the ship. In space due to the distances, there is very little visual identification, just radar silhouettes and transponder codes to tell you what a ship is. Throwing a bunch of tank on the outside just makes it look like a Belter hodge-podge of a ship.

Amos was hurt that Naomi was afraid of him, even though he'd kill or die at her word. But when she said, "Holden was right," Amos accepted that and could not be angry with Holden. Amos was raised in brothels and has sympathy and respect for sex workers. Things to take note of about Amos. Dawes is not someone to trust, but everything he says about Earthers is true.

The rock hoppers being harassed by the Martians does several things for the plot. It shows how the belters get treated by the inners. It shows that the belters are getting fed up and starting to fight back. It makes the Martians feel threatened just in time for Fred Johnson to tell the crew that they were going to have to sneak across 3 Martian-controlled zones while trying to reach the coordinates where they are supposed to meet Lionel Polanski. And we have the kid that was kicked out by his uncle, who we've already seen once before. This show plays the long game. There are some things being setup in these episodes that will become important next episode. There are some things being setup in these episodes that will become important in season 4 or 5.

The planets closest to our sun are called the inner planets or sometimes the terrestrial planets cause they are made up mostly of rock, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. In contrast the outer planets are Neptune, Saturn, Uranus and Jupiter. They are also known as the gas giants or jovian planets, after Jupiter. The Belters live and work on different stations Tycho, Eros, Ceres etc. in the asteroid belt, which is located between Mars and Jupiter. The asteroid belt is therefore a natural dividing line between the inner rocky planets and the gas giants in the jovian system. Belters therefore call people from Earth and Mars as inners. The Belters on Ceres are under UN governership, but all Belters are increasingly frustrated by being oppressed and having no say in how they are ruled. Because they don't have one permanent location, are spread across different stations under differing kinds of rules and jurisdictions of Earth and Mars, and are harrassed in a myriad of ways by both Earth and Mars, belters have differing interests. Those differing interests are represented by different factions, some more powerfull than others. They all agree on one thing though, eventual indepedence from Earth, at some point. Some of these factions are loosely allied together in the Outer Planets Alliance or OPA and represent belter interests in relation to Earth and Mars. So the OPA is very much a grassroots organisation for belters on some levels, some more militant than others. Star Helix is a private security company based on Earth that has contracts to police both Ceres station and cities on Earth. So the police force is completely privatised in this future. Miller is a cop working for Star Helix. They are considered as the armed wing of an occupation force by a lot of belters.

Good catch on Naomi's tattoo matching the scars from the vac suits Aaron. The belters get those tattoos for just that reason. That chip that Fred took from Lopez's suite is the chip that the Donnager's captain got from the crewman that she told to scan the stealth ship's drive signatures. The captain gave it to Lopez and told him to make sure it got off the ship.

I'm very thankful that you all are reacting to The Expanse, and I enjoy your fun reactions. But try to remember this show doesn't waste any lines and no scenes are filler. Even radio transmissions in the background mean something. The nephew that the uncle spaced is the same kid Miller busted on Ceres for stealing water. His name is Diogo. He was working with his uncle try to make a honest living after getting busted. But that doesn't work out well after being harrassed by the Martians!

A subtle thing leading up to this ep; Miller turns down a free drink in one scene and asks for coffee in another. Miller is coming to grips with himself and being inspired by Julie. This snotnosed, rich kid Earther gave up her life of luxury and put her life on the line for Belters. Miller, who is a belter, has never really been a belter. He's an alcoholic, corrupt, joke of a cop. He now realizes this and is making a change. Julie inspires him to become a better Belter.

Also it's relatively easier to travel in space rather than under the ocean (if we factor out the leaving the atmosphere bit and the lack of protection from solar radiation), because there is no pressure in the vacuum of space compared to the abysmal amount under the ocean.

Diego was in space but in a relatively populated shipping lanes. In space like oceans there are shortest routes which people would use regularly. The uncle knew the kid would be found because all suits have a beacon.

Johnson isn't _the_ leader of the OPA... he's _a_ leader of the OPA, Dawes, for instance, being another; there are about as many factions within the OPA as there are belters... and that's counting belters like Miller who _aren't_ in the OPA.

I appreciate that you made _most_ connections without needing to know every little detail (like with the OPA). In the context of the show, the comparisons I'd make would be with separatist groups like IRA and ETA, where there will always be debates around both their goals and their methods. Though the confusion around who they are and who's a part of it seems to evoke more recent real world comparisons like the post-9/11 "every muslim is al-qaeda" paranoia.

Last episode had these great little moments with the main crew of four getting to know that ship and finding little places that seemed to feel like home to them. I didn't have any doubt that they'd show back up on that ship at the end, ready to stay with it. It feels like this was meant to be their ship. I don't know how long we'll get with them on it, but it feels like it's meant to be their home. I also liked the additional info about the character of Amos this episode. I feel like that detail about his past can provide a lot of insight into him. I also really liked getting this more substantial meeting with Fred Johnson: simple name, complicated character. This episode gave us a lot of character exposition and as good a plot synopsis as we can have with the information at hand so far.

Fred Johnson is in charge of the Faction on Tycho Station. They both belong to the moderate Factions of the OPA that try to achieve independence for the Belt from Earth and Mars with politics. There are other more extremist factions that try to achieve the same with piracy and terrorism, like the one guy who was cought with stolen martian stealth tech.

RAH-SIN-AHN-TAY. Friggin Diogo………… And I will guarantee Eric and Calvin will come to love and adore Amos. It’s interesting to watch the things you each point out. Minor details that I didn’t necessarily see or take note of when I watched the first time, but saw when I recently rewatched the series. Belters are scrappers and do the back breaking work needed to support the Inners. Think of the mafia today. There are different factions everywhere but not one real governing body but all are known as “the mafia”. Beltalowdas are unfortunately treated like crap by the Inners. The OPA is a collective group of factions from beyond Earth or Mars in our solar system, who are trying to develop their rights within the system as a legitimate entity (like UN or Mars)

You would, but not very fast. About 0.05 m/s (0.1 mph) at a high-end estimate (assuming an average human mass of 62kg, a bullet mass of about 8g, and a bullet velocity around 370m/s). That's being a bit generous for a "normal" bullet's mass and velocity.

@@honestclickbait8243 You can't escape the tyranny of mass. Mass is a fundamental* quality of an object. No matter were it is in the universe (on Earth, on the Moon, floating between stars, etc.) it always has the same mass. That mass will weigh different depending on the local gravity well, but even while drifting in space, it's still the mass that determines the object's inertia - how much force you have to apply to change its velocity. So if you apply the same amount of force to two objects, the less massive one will have a greater change in velocity than the more massive one. *Technically, there are ways to change an object's mass, but that gets us into relativity. Luckily with the sort of physics you're talking about with a person and a bullet, we're still safely in comfortable Newtonian physics.

Tbf as someone who hasn't read the books before watching the show, I was also confused about the OPA, and what it stands for, for about 1 1/2 seasons. Only then I looked it up. The show does a terrible job telling you about them. I've remedied it after season 3, when I started reading the books.

Astronomy didn't get covered in high school when I was there about 20 years ago. We did a bit in middle school and elementary school, but that didn't cover much more than the 9 (now 8) planets. The individual components of the asteroid belt (including Ceres) weren't covered at all. This isn't as common knowledge as you might expect.
