I love the bit when talking about a Mormon time capsule. The idea of it starting a new branch of religion in another solar system just by "some books that fell from outer space" is rather ironic. Lol.

In case anyone is actually wondering, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" means don't start questioning or criticizing a gift. When someone is considering buying a horse, they examine it for health and vitality. Part of that exam is to check inside its mouth to check the state of its teeth, an indication of general health and age. When someone gifts you a horse, you don't insult the gift or judge it by checking it over to see how good it is. You just say thank you and appreciate the thing you otherwise wouldn't have gotten.

Christjen is indeed great, isn’t she. Relatable characters are essential but is so good to have one to rely on, cunning as she is to figure out things in a semi-realistically way. It makes perfect sense as we know she’s pragmatic and skeptical of everyone. The conversations on what is happening on Venus, maybe Julie have been receiving injections, conflict indeed creates unwilling victims... a well produced story indeed, that are interesting facets for all likes. Hearing that Eric got chills made me happy, I’m glad you guys are enjoying this.

You can use a rock found in a ditch to slam a nail into a wall, that is a also utility. The protomolecule can be designed for an intended function but that is not "purpose". One twin brother can go out into the woods, chop a tree down and carve a wooden chair intending to sit in it by the fireplace reading Shakespeare but the other twin brother can come in, chop the chair into firewood and make a fire with it in the fireplace. How is that humans being egomaniacs?? I can appreciate your examples but your final statement seems really out of place. Humans find uses for things and in doing so find people who appreciate or need that thing for its uses. That’s not being an egomaniac. That’s precisely creating value. An egomaniac is someone with a YT handle of “mansplainer”.

@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps You really cannot talk about humanity in sweeping generalisations, its childish, humans come in just about every shape size intelectual ability, I find that some individuals, just some a minority, conclude that the world is a simple place where everyone has the same thought processes as they do, you would have to be a egomaniac to believe that, on a chemical level all brains are different no two brains think alike. If people believe a thing has value then it does, its value is their believe, to discount that ascribed value is a act of arrogance.

10:10 This is one of the reasons I enjoy The Expanse so much (& your reactions to it). As Eric said, it’s not some superhero SciFi. It is “more grounded.” Not just with the book series’ original authors & TV series writers James S.A. Corey (which is the nom de plum of two authors - Ty Franck & Daniel Abraham) attempt to be scientifically accurate, but with the emotional situations through the series. Also, their idea that the first extraterrestrial contact humans finally end up having isn’t with some little green men or some huge bug looking creature hell bent on killing everything, but instead an infectious molecule - hell bent on remaking everything, is uniquely refreshing. Even for the world of SciFi.

Fermi Paradox So to understand science behind what the authors were going for we should talk about the Drake Equation, the Fermi Paradox, and the Great Filter. The Drake Equation is a way to estimate the number of technological civilizations in the galaxy. N = R* x Fp x Ne x Fl x Fi x Fc x L N - number of detectable technological civilizations R* - rate of star formation Fp - fraction of stars systems with planets Ne - avg number of planets per system that can support life Fl - fraction of planets that develop life Fi - fraction that develop intelligent life Fc - fraction that develop a technological civilization L - avg length of time the civilization is active Depending on the assumptions for these variables and length of time the galaxy has existed there should be several alien civilizations that are detectable - there aren’t. Which brings us to the Fermi Paradox. Where is everyone? Even with conservative estimates for the variables there should be somebody detectable around. Since there isn’t, that means something drives the estimates to be much lower than we think they are. That could be REALLY bad for humanity. The hypothesis for why there is no other detectable alien civilizations around is called The Great Filter. It assumes there is one or multiple “filters” that affects the term(s) in the Drake equation. For example if planets like Earth that could support life are extremely rare then intelligent aliens would also be extremely rare. If the conditions that allow life to form are extremely specific then maybe it rarely happens and again intelligent life would be very rare. Now for some of these terms our technology helps us make a good estimate. Astronomy gives us a good idea of how many stars there are and how fast they are forming. Since the 90’s we’ve gotten better at finding planets around those stars including ones in similar orbits to Earth. In the next couple of decades we can probably narrow down how likely some of those are to have atmospheres like Earth. The problem for humans is what if the filter is on the last term, the length of a technological civilization. If it turns out there are plenty of habitable planets and intelligent life easily occurs again again, yet we don’t detect them, then something prevents civilizations from existing for very long. Something like most civilizations tend to wipe themselves out via war or environmental collapse. Or maybe natural phenomena like supernovas and gamma ray bursts happen frequently enough to sterilize almost all planets with life on them. Or maybe some advanced race of aliens sends some mysterious blue goo to your solar system that could have wiped out all life on Earth if it hadn’t gotten caught by Saturn. At any rate lets hope we are passed the filter since our civilization is detectable in greater than 100 light year diameter sphere via our radio transmissions. Which suggests we might not have much time left
