@anonymes2884 3 жыл бұрын
I doubt many people adopt an accent, dialect, culture etc. because it's "fun". It's likely more because the Texan accent, possibly because of NASA etc., became associated with high status in the history of Mars' colonisation (in the UK we see the same thing with e.g. Received Pronunciation, an English accent native to a small minority which, mostly for arbitrary historical reasons, became associated with status, education etc. and so which some people still regard as "speaking properly" and a desirable way to sound. It's so widely heard in exported films, TV etc. that to most people from overseas it's become _the_ "British accent" even though less than 5% of the population have it).

I just watched a video w/ one of the book/show writers and the actor who plays Amos (Wes) and the writer said the main actors are based on characters made up by friends he invited to play a D& D type game to help him flesh out the characters and story. This is a reason why Shed was killed off so early. The friend who was 'playing' Shed unexpectedly had to stop playing so the writer used that as a 'surprise' death in the game. He credits his friends for helping develop the characters for him

I love how you can see the difference between Holden, Fred, and Miller in this episode. When the scientist was talking, it was Fred who started to engage with the head scientist and Miller who shot him, but back on Tycho, Holden is the one who's angry with Miller, while Fred lets him go free. You can see how Fred gets what Miller did and respects it, even though he was himself going in the opposite direction. Holden on the other hand is extremely rigid in his moral views.

One thing I want to point out wrt Amos is that he is not a reliable narrator. Just because he *says* he doesn't feel care for other people or emotion doesn't make it true. This is really apparent in the books, where he says he doesn't feel fear or emotion, but imo from an outside perspective it's pretty clear that he does! He is afraid that he's not a good person, he is afraid of something happening to the people that he loves, and he takes steps to ensure that he doesn't hurt innocent people and that he protects the people he cares about. Amos just has a lot of difficulty identifying and processing his emotions as they are. It's especially clear in his POV chapters that he relates to his emotions in a very different way than "most people" (and I put that in quotations because there are certainly a lot of people in the real world who DO relate to their emotions in a similar way). He's a very interesting and well-written character, in the books and the show.

Really interesting watching them trying to understand Amos. At its core is that Rick and Calvin are seeing Amos through _Amos'_ eyes whereas Eric's viewpoint is tinged with a fan's POV, both perspectives being entirely fair (and neither being "the truth"). Which is a good testament both to Wes Chatham's performance and the complexity of the character IMO.
@johnjungkook2721
@johnjungkook2721 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, I think Rick and Calvin have already put Amos in a mental "box" of fantasy/sci-fi hench-men that have no empathy. They're coming more from a tv-fan's perspective - they've seen a bunch of sci-fi - and they consider characters to be "types". Whereas Eric noticed small details that signal towards something more complicated. Rick and Calvin are quick to label Amos as the dumb "pattern recognition" guy, but ironically they're the ones who think through "pattern recognition" and Eric is more willing to decide for himself.
@anonymes2884
@anonymes2884 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnjungkook2721 I don't mean "TV fan" or "sci-fi fan", I mean fan of _Amos_ - in other words Eric already likes him I think which is _partly_ why he doesn't see him as _just_ the psycho henchman _at this point_ * (though FWIW I agree Eric is usually the most insightful of the bunch). Even then, those "small details" you think he sees are _also_ a "TV fan" thing. Shows, very much including 'The Expanse', plant "signals" all the time (sometimes misleading or ambiguous ones). With Amos for instance the show uses maybe _the_ biggest writing trick when creating sympathetic psychos (he's funny, either in the writing or in Chatham's matter of fact delivery, which is almost always TV show sleight of hand for "goodie"). So you could also see it _at this point_ as just Eric "falling for" the show's line on Amos. [ Spoilers for later episodes including season 5... ] . . . . . . * i.e. a point before we see almost all the evidence to the contrary Rick and Calvin are right for instance that Amos _is_ asking about the lack of empathy reversal for himself and _is_ disappointed when the doctor says it can't be (Eric's wrong about that but accidentally right about why, the procedure itself not having been done on Amos - his "procedure" was basically life in Baltimore). Because that lack of empathy is what Amos believes about himself i.e. as I say, Rick and Calvin are "falling for" _Amos's_ line on Amos (which is testament to Wes Chatham). Amos believes he's simply a bad guy. Hell, by most metrics he IS a bad guy _except_ that self-awareness is his redeeming quality - he knows he's a killer but he also knows he can choose to "point" that in a better direction so kind of gloms on to anyone he perceives as knowing which direction that is. Calvin's comparison to Dexter is actually pretty apt IMO - you can see it as either some part of Amos is his own "Harry" (since he _thinks_ he can't discern moral action himself but he _can_ discern people who can) OR Lydia was kind of his Harry (no scare quotes) when she taught him that you don't need to be righteous to do right (kind of like if Harry himself was also like Dexter). It's entirely reasonable _even now_ to view Amos as "pattern matching" moral behaviour, recognising it by rules rather than feel (and what we know about his backstory doesn't change that - many serial killers were _also_ horrifically abused as kids for instance). (and as I say, one reason the show's so great is that neither line is necessarily "the truth" about Amos)

If you read the Novella "The Churn" you get Amos' backstory. I don't want to say anything that would be considered a spoiler, however, the reason that Amos cares for people is that he looks to them to provide a moral compass for him. That said, Amos' comprehension of what triggers a pedophile is something that you will see evolve in future episodes.

I don't think Amos lost his empathy - I think he struggles inwardly and probably he was asking about the operation because he wants to get one. He wants to know if he can turn off his empathy temporarily so that he can do what he does without the internal struggles that he goes through, he wants to be more efficient. I probably said that wrong - he has "issues" and he wants relief, that's how I took it. He was very curious... I could be totally wrong but Amos seems to snap and loses control and becomes violent - this is the opposite of what he wants, I feel he wants to be violent but without the feelings, without the berserker rage.

Texas also has extremely clear weather, making long distance radio communication and telemetry easier, the only other viable option in the US were Arizona and Nevada, in fact the only reason we launch from Florida instead of Texas is if a launch fails it crashes or blows over the Atlantic rather than the gulf which has far more naval traffic and permanent oil derricks. Texas was probably picked from those three based partially on politics (as you described) but also cause houston was by far the largest most populated city in those three states back when NASA was being established, and still might be the largest.

Question to the Blind Wave crew. Have you realised yet that there is no artificial gravity on the ships in the show? The ships in the show are basically skyscrapers with the floor oriented like a skyscraper, they "make" gravity through acceleration and deceleration. For example, keep accelerating at 3 meters per second you will experience 1/3g, about what there is on Mars. Then half way you flip your ship around and decelerate at 3 meters per second, the deceleration will make you experience the same gravity. The stations like Ceres and Eros on asteroids do it through spin, so the centrifugal force will make the people experience gravity but in reverse, their down is towards the outer surface of the asteroids, and up is towards the center.

When Mars was settled, groups of people from Texas and groups of people from southeast Asia, like Indians, settled in the Mariner Valley of Mars so they all ended up speaking with a Texas accent. Alex was born and raised on Mars. Also, another group of people from the Polynesian islands, also Australia and New Zealand settled in a different area and those people ended up speaking with Bobbie's type of accent.

I am sure others are going to note , or you guys already know , the next two episodes go exponential. Worthy of two part format. For some reason some reactors in the past have cut down or eliminated a super VFX event in the next episode .... don't know why. Episode 5 is so compelling it usually gets covered more completely .

If enough reactors cut the same major scene it's very likely because of copyright strikes.

NASA is in Houston because LBJ wanted NASA in Texas. There was already a test range in Florida, so they just adapted that.

Spoilers I haven't rewatched in a while. What was Amos's reaction to the empathy procedure about?
@sparrowlt
@sparrowlt 3 жыл бұрын
he was just curious.. Amos has a problem with doing the right thing as his childhood and life was so fucked up but at the same time he genuily recognices that and wants to do the right stuff ... so what he does is looks for someone to follow to provide a moral compass (Lydia, Naomi, Holden , Anna.. ) as he strugles to do it by himself.. seeing a person who chose to lack any empathy on porpouse got his curiosity as thats something he strugles to acomplish and then he is seeing someone who decided to get rid of it by choice.. he was not considering doing that to himself.. he was just striken at this

Yes he is gone because something Shane did but blindwave crew didn't really made it public. If you want to see him react to stuff he has his own channel called "Shane Farley".
