Both Miller and Julie had visions of each other. As Julie was lying in the hotel room on Eros, she saw Miller walking towards her. Miller saw Julie in the arcade on Eros, in the airlock of the Rocinante, in the belter kid's apartment as he was cutting his hair, and finally in the FedEx container during the assault on spin station. Miller is the only person who came for Julie. Julie gave Miller something to believe in, something worth fighting for.

@@ThePunikaTV At this point, we don't know the full extent of how the proto-molecule works. That's my only guess. Maybe Julie was infected and it made her sensitive to people who were looking for her. It makes sense considering that her father was working on it for so long that it may have affected her early on. Or maybe Miller was also infected somehow.

@@ThePunikaTV Well it detected the missile launch all the way from Earth. I think think the impending danger of the Ship coming to nudge Eros activated the protomolecule before it was fully ready, so it had to reconstruct Julie and depend on her mind to process stuff. As a result it lost some control to her. And just like it detected incoming threats, it also detected Miller as the only ally, as he's the only one that was genuinely looking for Julie without any harmful intentions. That was probably the case right from when she was infected, that's why she had a vision of him as she was dying.

It felt like a Season Finale because this was the finale of the 1st book. The rest of Season 2 covers the first 2/3 of Book 2. There was too much story to do to have it be 1 Season per book, but some things get condensed, others get expanded upon or added. IIRC Thomas Jane and Florence Faivre said that the kiss was improvised on set, not scripted, that they felt the energy of the scene and just went for it.

I'd say Season 1 had the benefit of having Avasarala's point of view from the beginning instead of having her introduced in the second book to push more time. We also get Bobbie introduced before the beginning of book 2 as well to add a Martian perspective to some of book 1's events like Mars' moon being blown to smithereens.
@KainErrow
@KainErrow 6 жыл бұрын
prophetofgreed Bobbi also feels more legit in the show to me. The old rule of "Soldier's Obey" made her actions and how she kinda fell back on her training a lot more sensible. Some people actually felt that a certain turning point for her didn't make sense, that it was too quick, but if you read the books and compared it was a thousand times slower on the show. There was an actual progression vs the way the books put it out.

**No Spoilers** Yeah, the delays in communication are because radios and laser transmitters and any other form of communication can only travel at the speed of light, so it can take seconds or minutes or even over an hour for a message to come through, even in our solar system. It takes ~14 minutes (plus or minus, depending on where they are in their orbits) for light or radio waves from Mars to reach Earth, and even longer for a message from the Earth to the Asteroid belt or Jupiter, etc (Though Eros is a near-Earth asteroid, so sometimes it can be closer than Mars, and definitely was in this episode). Between the Earth and Moon, it is ~1.3 seconds, hence why it was so awkward for Avasarala and her husband Arjun.

Loved the reaction and love that you guys are continuing these despite the fan community for The Expanse being apparently much, much smaller than all of the other shows you react to. The Expanse is legitimately the most underrated and underappreciated show on television right now and Syfy has been knocking it out of the park with the adaptation. This would be hugely popular already if it aired on HBO or something. It deserves a lot more attention from both regular tv watchers and reactors!

As much as Eros accepted Julie's destination, Julie wasn't in COMPLETE control. It was more like a partnership. Remember when Miller wanted her to stop it & she said "No---you can't stop the work!"? Ultimately the protomolecule has an agenda, an objective & it's only willing to accept the hosts wishes if it serves the end goal. It wanted Earth for the biomass & Julie wanted to go home, but Venus was also suitable because of all the chemical compounds there.

The inside of Eros all coated in protomolecule looks very ethereal and dream-like in the show. In the books, it's a Cronenberg-esque visceral nightmare world. I get they probably don't have the capability to do that effectively on the show... but taking away the body horror element sort of makes the protomolecule less terrifying than it is in the books.

**Speculation, Not Spoilers** AFAIK It's never fully confirmed in the books or show, just hinted at, especially since the book scene is a bit different, but many fans speculate that the Protomolecule is somewhat detached from linear time, so the ProtoJulie and Miller were always connected in some way, once she became infected at least (since it happened in S1 E1). That's why it would show the bird, something from his memories, even before he took his helmet off and got infected, because it knew he and his memories would become part of it at some point. I've finished book 7 of the series, and all the novellas, and even now, the protomolecule is very mysterious, and I like it that way so fans can speculate.

( Not technically a spoiler since it was discussed right after the episode aired but avoid if you want to finish the whole season anyway): Yes, the showrunners confirmed that the moment they kissed, it echoed through time into the past. They didn't go into painstaking detail but it's a good bet that at least some of MIller's visions were part of that phenomena. The Protomolecule has a limited presence across nonlinear time without changing outcomes, since that would derail it's objective. I think it's smart enough to just know what not to do.

@Bhaalgorn2302
@Bhaalgorn2302 6 жыл бұрын
your timings are fairly accurate but radio signals travel at the speed of light as well, so they are going just as fast as sunlight. any delays in communications are entirely down to distance. holdens message was marked at a 15 minute delay so they actually arent very far from earth all things considered. i assume "the belt" refers to the kuiper belt, voyager 1 is out somewhere near that right now and signals that far take 20 hours and its taken it 40 years to fly there. its a long way to go to haul ice.
@damonbrown5424
@damonbrown5424 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, "The Belt" here refers to the asteroid belt between Mars & Jupiter - with Ceres being the largest object. Eros is 433 Eros, an asteroid that travels across Mars orbit and came as "close" to Earth as 26,729,000 km in 2012. AFAIK, the farthest inhabited area they've shown in the series so far (through the end of S2) is Ganymede, a Jovian moon - well short of the Kuiper Belt. I didn't see where they labeled the message "15 minute delay" but I'll certainly take your word for it. For reference, the *average* distance between Earth & Mars is 225,000,000 km. And as you pointed out, radio waves travel at the speed of light as well (~300,000 km/s). So, transmission time between Earth & Mars at their average distance would be about 750 seconds or 12.5 minutes. Since, we don't necessarily know the exact distance of 433 Eros to Earth at that point - especially factoring in the movement from the Protomolecule - we just have to take a number that falls within a reasonable range of potential possibilities. A 15 minute delay would imply a distance of 270M km, which would likely fit the bill, though.
@Bhaalgorn2302
@Bhaalgorn2302 6 жыл бұрын
Ahh that makes more sense, thanks for the correction. I know in the show they travel under constant acceleration instead of using slingshots the way we do, so i figured they were just a damn site faster than us. Figured I might as well mention this, but taping a dead person's finger onto the dead man's switch would not have worked. Modern touchscreen controls, like the ones your phones utilize, work by detecting disturbances caused when your finger makes contact with the screen. These disturbances are the result of the electrical field your body generates interacting with the electrical field of the screen. That's why you can't use a modern touchscreen while wearing thick gloves no matter how hard you press, the material of the glove insulates the screen's electrical field from your finger's. Taping a dead person's finger, aside from being morbid, would also do diddly squat, as tissue that has been dead for long enough, like the tissue of a finger from someone on Eros who's been dead for weeks by now, does not generate the requisite electrical field in order to trigger the screen.

I'll leave my apology, though, as my filter is kinda broken and if It's not one thing, It's another. :) The more excited I am for this or that, the less it seems to work, and I am always very excited for 'The Expanse.'

I don't think it's fair to call Miller an obsessed creeper, I interpreted it as a sort of religious devotion, an idea that gave his life meaning, you guys always trying to make it icky somehow.
@tonycamas9747
@tonycamas9747 6 жыл бұрын
It's a pretty controversial subject, even among much of the fandom. There is, after all, a pretty significant age difference, among other things. But I agree, he's not an obsessed creeper, at least not the way that term is usually applied. What I think a lot of people don't notice is that Miller's love for Julie is actually a pretty "pure" thing; it's not about lust and sex, it's about the fact that she inspires him, which is a pretty big thing to an old cynic like Miller. I mean, I'm sure the fact that she's a pretty young girl is not lost on him, but Miller is more in love with the idea of Julie than he is in love with Julie herself. And he does say this pretty often, to people who will actually listen. He says it to Naomi, he says it to Semi, and he actually says it to Julie herself (or proto-Julie) right there near the end. Miller is jaded and cynical and believes (at least before his first visit to Eros) that pretty much everybody is either corrupt or weak. Julie is neither one, something he comes to realize as he investigates her, and by the time Season 2 rolls around, she's become his salvation, his reason for living (as you say). Don't know if you (or others here) know this, but the kiss at the end was not scripted; it was improvised on the spot by the actors, and I guess the folks who made the show looked at it both ways and decided it worked. And I agree. But I don't think the kiss was meant to be sensual or sexy -- it's a kiss of relief, of longing resolved, and a promise to be together for whatever comes next. And yes, it makes more sense that Miller would feel this way than Julie, but then remember, this is not exactly Julie. It's some amalgam of Julie and the Protomolecule, which probably finds Miller potentially useful and will benefit from "absorbing" him as it absorbed Julie and many others. We don't know at this point whether Julie and Miller survived the crash into Venus, but with everything we've learned about the protomolecule, I think at this point most people would figure it a pretty safe bet that we haven't seen the last of it. I think it worked, and I think it made sense. But I also think Miller was possibly being manipulated a bit at the end there. But, you know, in a really nice way. :)
@tonycamas9747
@tonycamas9747 6 жыл бұрын
I hear that. But I think you have to admit that there are a lot of actual creepy guys out there in the real world, and so I think it's a reasonable reaction, at least up to this point. I mean, even a lot of the characters in the show were not too sure about Miller's Julie obsession. Hell, if Miller himself had observed this behavior in someone else, he probably would've assumed the worst too. I can't get angry at people watching the show from making assumptions about something that is an uncomfortable subject for a lot of people. I do think, though, that this episode clears up a lot of this stuff and finally shows people how things really are. So I guess if someone STILL feels Miller was a dirty old man creeper after watching this episode, then I'd say they're being stupid. But beforehand... there are a lot of gray areas on this show, which is one of the great things about it. And this was probably one of them. But hey, that's me. You can still be pissed off, you have every right to be...
@luke666808g
@luke666808g 6 жыл бұрын
It's only a reasonable reaction if you take the whole thing out of context, but I have a feeling that as a culture, we're losing the ability to appreciate context.
@tonycamas9747
@tonycamas9747 6 жыл бұрын
That may be true, unfortunately. But then, we're living in a time when large swaths of the populace can't even agree on something as fundamental and non-negotiable as truth. So to expect people to appreciate something as nuanced as context in these strange times may be asking too much. All I can say is, I hope against hope that this will be a temporary phenomenon.

One of my favorite details from the books that didn't make it into the show is that Eros talks, constantly. It just sends out a constant stream of meaningless talking, fragments of words and phrases, never anything coherent but always speaking with the voices of the dead. That was much more creepy to me than meaningless alien screeching.
@Jabberwocky415

Dude that’s literally in the show. They mention several times that there are “voices” coming off of Eros. And it’s mentioned later in the show as well by Proto-Miller.

@@Jabberwocky415 They SAY Eros talks, to mean Eros communicates. They decided not to integrate that into the sound design OF Eros. There is a HUGE difference between "Eros makes noise even though everyone is dead" and "Eros just screamed 'don't you fucking touch me'".

@@Jabberwocky415 "Don't you fucking touch me" is what Eros screamed when it dodged the Nauvoo. It screamed that in Julie's voice. And as far as I remember, that's the only time Eros said something coherent, i.e. relevant to it's current circumstances and not meaningless word salad.

Communication aka radio travels near light speed (300 000km per sec) but the distances are still fairly great so for instance a message from mars(56million kilometers) to earth takes over 3 minutes in one direction even when they are closest to each other. So a back and forth takes nearly 7 minutes. Imagine those guys at NASA controlling the rover on Mars. Turn left, wait 3. something minutes for your signal to reach it. Wait for it to send visual and whatever else data back for another 3 minutes. Rinse and repeat. ;) Eventually you will have to wait 2x13 = 26minutes for communication when Mars and Earth are getting further apart(220million km). When they are the most furthest apart it takes around 45minutes for a signal to go there and back. (Around 400 million)

allyourmoney Absolutely, Shawn Doyle. They did a great job of fleshing him out character wise, versus the 2D we got in the books. He's definitely not a "good guy" (who really is) but he does have pretty honest intentions. He took Avasarala's motto, "Earth must come first," and added emphasis. Some people have characterized him as a Republican War Hawk but really, he's just a War Hawk (neither left nor right) that believes in maintaining and asserting Earths primacy in the dynamic of Earth and Mars. Hell, he freaked on Avasarala for torturing that one Belter in the first episode (counter point: Eros)
