As we round out the ending of Book 1, we would like to hear your favorite theories that we got right or wrong within Book 1 ! If it continues a plot into further seasons, then please no spoilers but if we had a theory that's complete as of now let us know (Miller-Julie, False flag etc.)! Make sure to stick around for the extended discussion at the end and enjoy! - Mikey

I can't talk about my favourite of your theories without spoilers, I'll just say that at one point, you got so close yet so far away. Kudos to Joe for keeping a poker face all along. My second favourite theory is of course the Mormons as the secret third (or fourth) faction! Setting off a potentially all-out genocidal war in the Solar System while leaving it themselves, a Mormon version of the Rapture, LOL.

when he said can anybody explain this it had nothing to do with the eros going stealth meaning as it had more to do with could someone explain how a known place like eros became not only a ship but also became stealth. that was the bigger question obviously he knows what going stealth means.

if you pay attention, there's a lot of hints that julie and miller were connected. julie knew about the term "kidnap job" which was what miller called the initial case to find her. julie also had a vision of miller entering her room in the blue falcon. in the s2e1, Miller told Naomi that she dreams of julie holding him and saying "you belong with me".

The protomolecule was depicted as juggling time. Crystal barnacle Julie, who had never seen Joe Miller in her entire life, saw him being led towards her by the bird as she was dying. That was not a dream sequence. It was a depiction of an actual future event. Julie wasn't capable of seeing the future, but the protomolecule was shown to be capable of perceiving a future event and seeing it unfold in the present.
@garrettsharpe1464
@garrettsharpe1464 Жыл бұрын
I'm now thinking that it's not the protomolecule seeing the future, it's Julie's perception blinking out in death and only blinking on again when Miller approaches in Eros at the end telling her to wake up. Essentially she fell asleep upon death and woke up to Miller entering the room, not perceiving that any time had passed in between.

Exactly. Time is definitely not entirely linear for the Protomolecule. This might have also affected Julie Mao and especially Millerthroughout the entire season.
@scottwatrous
@scottwatrous Жыл бұрын
It's hard to know how much is literally time being nonlinear for the PM (aka seeing future events) vs narratively we can see that at a certain point the PM combines all the timelines or something. LIke when we see Julie seeing Miller walk in, that is all in the midst of flashbacks and the like anyways. Having read all the books, I'm starting to see some aspects that are figured out in the last books which really help put some stuff from Eros into more context. But it took until basically just now that I realized those things inform these scenes in a way that I never put together before.
@snarflcat6187

Wrong on one thing : the Protomolecule DID play with Time. As Julie was dying (and yes this was days before the crew found her) she not only saw Miller, but she saw him AS HE WAS before he left Ceres station, including the hat that he LEFT on Ceres. “This stuff’s not from around here, who’s to say what it can do?”

Joe keeping a straight face while Mikey absolutely predicts the end of the book. LOL. Mikey said what I've always said: It's a space station that thinks its a girl. Julie was flying Eros, but she didn't have the power to stop it. At that thought, a different voice commanded, "You can't stop the work." So, the Protomolecule was using her as a tool. Miller had told Naomi that in his hallucinations of Julie, she told him, "You belong with me," which is what she said when they actually met. There seems to have been a connection between them before this meeting, which is the only reason I'm willing to accept that kiss...which was otherwise hokey. When Miller placed Julie's hand on the bomb, its control panel went dead. When he removed her hand, the bomb was no longer a problem. Dawes had told Miller, "When you've lost everything, you will find your way home and it will welcome you." Miller told Semitembe, "Julie is all I have"...then he lost Julie. So, he found his way home. They have already started the plotlines of book two, which they hadn't done with the books. Bobbie and even Avasarala did not appear in book one, but they are vital to book two. You guys give great discussion.

@@akellerhouse83 point out to him that the very first episode is "Dulcinea" a direct reference to Quixote (first of many) and is specifically calling out how Miller immediately connects with his idealized concept of Julie while searching for her - She literally gave a washed up, nothing-to-live-for Cop a reason to exist.

I hated the kiss too. Not at all surprised when I heard that was the actors' choice instead of the writers'. It very much puts an odd and unnecessary subtext on Miller's actions, and loses a lot of the nuance on Miller's feelings. Makes both of them seem weirdly into physical contact when the story has been busy implying that what they both really wanted was emotional contact. ...But it didn't ruin the show, and it does go on to get even better as far as I'm concerned.

I will say that Julie did see Miller before she died. She had a vision of Miller with a hat, holding his hand up with her necklace dangling off of it and the bird fluttering above his open hand. Julie used some of the same phrases that Miller used previously, ie: kidnap job and you belong to me. Was that just coincidence? Im looking forward to the next one guys. Beautiful episode, I was surprised by how Chrisjen's conversation with her husband messed me up as much as it did. Great writing and acting. Oh, and don't forget the score, watching this episode without the background music would be not nearly as good. I have to mention that the kiss between Miller and Julie was not scripted; the authors never intended for it to be in the scene, but the actors just felt it was right and went for it.

A note on energy levels. Nukes may be incredibly powerful on a human scale, but the impact of an asteroid the size of Eros (34.4 × 11.2 × 11.2 km, about five times the volume of the Chixculub impactor that killed the dinosaurs) and typical inner solar system speeds would be several _orders of magnitude_ more energetic than all the nukes ever built combined. Then again, though they don't say it, from the looks of it (the impact doesn't have globe-spanning effects on Venus) Eros must have slowed down significantly before impact.
@LeeCarlson
@LeeCarlson Жыл бұрын
Fun fact is that Fred Johnson and Drummer did not see the nuclear missile launch from Earth until almost fifteen minutes after the fact. And they saw Eros "go dark" almost a minute after the Roci's crew saw it. Then there is the 3-second lag that Avarsarala and Arjun are dealing with since he's on Luna. Isn't the speed of light lag fun?

That was a good discussion! And Mikey, keep up the theorising! Last time I told you to take notes. This applies especially from here on out. One bit of info you had on the protomolecule was Dresden saying that it was sent to the Solar System on an asteroid _billions_ of years ago. That is, before there was even multi-celled life on Earth. Take that into account in your theories on whatever the protomolecule's "Work" Proto-Julie referred to is, and also in your theories on what the aliens who created the protomolecule are doing.

Again - great discussion guys! I won't say anything about your predictions because I don't remember all of them and I might spoil something from future seasons by accident. Miller and Julie. The last scene and the entire plot was used to pitch the show and apparently one or more of people in charge had tears in their eyes, which is not a surprise because the Expanse is the show which makes grown men cry - not the first and certainly not the last time in the series or even this season... Protomolecule and time. It doesn't affect it, but there is some... aftershock. The entire relationship between Miller and protomolecule-Julie is in some way affected by some sort of time waves - a sense of belonging which is not exactly love, more like shared fate. 100+ nukes. Not really, it is 100+ missiles, superb planet busters and each of them contains several warheads. That could mean 1000+ or even 2000+ high yield nukes... Elected officials acting under pressure. A certain level of competence has to be expected and required from people in charge. Often it doesn't matter as much if the person on the top is up to the task as long as people around the person are good enough. This means the Earth's UN Secretary General could be perfectly all right just because people like Avasarala are there as well. We can only speculate... the political plot is more important in this and future seasons. I really like having this excuse to re-watch the show, season 2 is considerably better than season 1 while season 3 is like a huge pay off for much of the world building while its is building more for future seasons. Take care!

No spoilers, but the whole upcoming Bobbie arc is *really* interesting. re: Amos and Bobbie: He could be armed and Bobbie could be in no armor and FEED him the gun. In the books, he refers to himself as a talented amateur when it comes to violence, but calls the MCRN Marines a "Whole other level." That being said, Bobbie would absolutely see Amos as the primary threat if the Roci's crew squared off against her (though she should be worrying about Naomi, who is entirely too smart to leave out of the equation).

An Earther would ragdoll a Martian any day of the week, regardless of technique. I see Bobbie simps still can't cope with basic biology. Periodically training at 1G is very different from bring raised in it. Not to mention the sexual dimorphisms in human that show the basic fact that the average man is quite a bit stronger than the average woman. The weakest 10% of men are stronger than 90% of women. Her match up could literally only be worse if she was a fucking Belter, lol. A teenage boy from Earth would give him more trouble physically. I love her character as much as anyone else but that entire scene is written as pure "girl power" bullshit because they want her to be big and tough and didn't think beyond that in a logical manner. Cope harder though, lol.

Joe I think that's a great idea for you all to react to your own reactions 😂 Mikey, you are hilarious! But will say this, some how you need to calm your mind just a little. Because you're racing so fast to figure things out that you're not taking in the nuances of just how special this show is! Just to lay things to rest, the Mormon theory is toast! 😂 Mike asked about time travel? Don't know much about that but remember just before Julie died she saw Miller with his hat on holding her necklace with the bird floating just beside him! Also Dawes told Miller that when he had lost everything he would see clearly what matters most for the first time, and he would find his way home! Also remember Miller told Naomi that he sees Julie and knows she's not really there, but she takes his hand and says " You belong with me!" The moment Miller told Julie he was supposed to find her she said " kidnap job!" That's what Miller told his boss when he was given the assignment to find her. Maybe the Protomolicule does experience time in a linear fashion as we do? Looking forward to the next one!

I've watched this episode at least a dozen times and my thoughts on it have evolved. In my opinion, you have to remember that the Julie entity that Miller finally meets on Eros is not Julie Mao but is a subroutine of the protomolecule, an alien machine sent eons ago to accomplish some work, the details of which haven't yet been revealed to us. Despite Miller's infatuation with the unmet biological Julie he does understand this. But he's the kind of guy that is OK with laying down his life for his love, even if she is a revenant. He knows that he is the only entity in the system that has the unimpeachable connection with the protomolecule on Eros (through his love for the Julie entity) to persuade it to modify the work to preserve Earth. He already knew he was going to die and, having pity for Julie, in whatever form, was good with seeing that she didn't die alone. Also, Mike, when you reacted to the blue seed crystal area as being "kind of gross," what were you referencing? 🤣

Thank you for cheering me up. I needed that. At this point in the series, I thought that the Mormons were not significant. If they were, we would have seen more of them. For example, a news broadcast (at least in the background of a scene) of them complaining about their ship being stolen. I do enjoy hearing all of M&M's theories (and watching Joe's reactions to them). If a Portal did open up, wouldn't they be talking to Gordon Freeman now? Now I'll share why I thought killing Dresden was the right move. Dresden claimed that the protomolecule was the most important thing to ensure the survival of humanity. He also said that the data was encrypted and would erase itself if anyone other than himself tried to access it. So, he decided that ONLY he is qualified. He's nuts. He doesn't know what he's talking about. But, what if he is right about the importance of the protomolecule? In that case, other people should be studying it. Between his ability to convince people that he's the savior and the funding that he's getting from Mao, Dresden is a dangerous nut job. And finally, I want to share a small mistake I made when I first watched this episode. I did not notice that Eros hit Venus. I saw it hit a planet. I assumed it was Earth, that Miller failed to convince Julie to change course. Looking at it these days, I know that Venus looks a "little" different than Earth and I should have realized it was not Earth. Oops.

Awesome episode. Awesome reactions. You guys delivered on my favorite episode of the series. That was FRAKKN fun to watch! Imagine finding out the story is about a GIANT Easter Bunny the size of Ego, the living planet, leaving strewing eggs across the galaxy. Waiting for them to hatch. Wait, no. Slap me so I can get serious! Number one, some controversy in THE EXPANSE community with what I'm about to say here. But I will make my case and you can each decide if I got this right.... From the beginning of the season the big question with Miller is why he is so obsessed with Julie Mao? Dawes said "You are in love with Julie Mao." How could he be in love with someone he never laid eyes on other than being handed a case file? Well Mikey is right. Miller is in love with Julie for reasons far richer and science fiction based than our imaginations allowed. -Ty Frank, one of the writers of the books confirmed on his podcast that the Protomolecule broke the rules of physics. Including time. (I assume having watched all six seasons that this is not a spoiler for any of the six seasons.) So here's my take. The Protomolecule propels Eros by folding Space/Time. Time and space being interlocked, the PM is also folding time itself so that time is no longer linear. The fold occurs as Eros is screaming towards Earth, Venus and the effects of that fold ripple forward and backwards through time like a wake. This is beyond the comprehension of mortal humans. I brains can only process so much weirdness. So we interpret the experience. The first being 'it's a dream' or 'it's an illusion. Much like trauma to our retina is interpreted as flashes or light or spots of black. When Miller first sees Julie in the gaming club on Eros, we as an audience assume it is because of radiation sickness. We assume he is hallucinating. When in fact he's seeing a time ripple of Julie, not from a single point in time but across multiple points in time that have folded onto themselves. She is wearing gear she wore from before she stepped onto the Scapuli. Miller and Julie both share seeing the bird. Julie experiences Miller wearing a hat. -Now some will say these are less about time but more about sharing a hive mind with the protomolecule. I say it's more. And the key is the dialog between Miller and Naomi in episode one of season 2. Where Miller says: "I wake up SOME NIGHTS and I see her standing right there. Now I know that's bullshit but she's right there. Se takes my hand. She tells me, 'You belong with me.' 'Some nights' implies that Miller has experience the dialog of future Julie on multiple occasions in the past. Not once. But multiple times. His brain is unable to process the experience so he convinces himself that her being there is bull. If that were true and it was an hallucination why would it be a factual account of a future event. If it were merely a 'hive mind' experience of them having a connected consciousness within the PM mind, then the Julie flash forwards should be a Smurf Julie saying 'you belong with me'. So to wrap up, "Is Miller in love with Julie?' He is at least emotionally overwhelmed by a ripple in time to a future he cannot understand or mentally process. All he knows are the feelings that come from a huge leap of faith. And sense of peace that Anderson Dawes foreshadowed when he said to Miller, he would lose everything and that's when he would find his way 'home.' Anyway, the shows great. You guys are cool. And Mike, quit picking on Kenzo!

Talking about Eden and Jesus and the "book of Miller", I feel like Miller's story was kind of a religious or at least spiritual one. Miller was so focussed on Julie, on how good and pure she was, he seemed to feel like if he could find her, he could earn redemption. He knew that he was a bad person, accepting bribes and generally being a dirty cop, but Julie woke his conscience. When he reached her she was dead, and it wrecked him, but it ultimately reawakened his love of humanity, and she was with him as he walked the path. He lived by her example instead of to earn her, and ultimately she was resurrected and he sacrificed his life to save all of humanity. Julie is kind of like Jesus, or heaven or... something? It's not a one to one, but I thought it was nice to use the tropes of belief and redemption for the story of Miller, the old noir cop on his last hurrah find his soul again.

23:52 Mike, when you see Proto-Julie kiss Miller, you seem to be doubting this could happen because you continue to assume she's still a girl who barely knows him, and that doesn't fit with what you believe to be proper behavior... That is a limited view on the situation based on your narrow definition of how things are supposed to be for a human girl. Except that Proto-Julie is NOT a human girl and does not necessarily think like a human girl would. Instead, what you are actually seeing, is a whole new kind of life/intelligence exploring how humans communicate and interact. It is using its "seed crystal" as a template to try to understand us. Emulating her, and mining her consciousness for clues. That is how it knows about her racing ship's name, and that Earth is home and her desire to go there. In the scene, Miller was making declarative statements of togetherness, and a shared experience to reassure her that she would not be abandoned. That she would not be alone. Remember, she "died" in pain and with the idea that she had been abandoned and forgotten by Dawes, and disowned by her father, so that kind of overt compassion could have been exactly what she needed... Proto-Julie responded with what it thought Julie might do in a similar situation of reassuring confort from a fellow human. There is no evidence that a kiss means the same to the proto-molecule as it does to you and me... Perhaps even sensing his own unspoken attraction, and mixing in his compassionate tone, she kissed him as if agreeing with Miller that togetherness was acceptable. Clearly, there was no assumption of subsequent sexual activity, here. Btw, that mispronunciation of Mao's "foreign" name was funny the first time. And every time after that, it was a little dumber than the last... Now it's seriously starting to sound like you might be either a bigot or an idiot... I'm still deciding. ;-]

The mystery presented in Book 1 makes The Expanse very fertile ground for discussion and speculation after each episode. The show is so cleverly written, though, that it is not very often that any reactor makes a spot-on prediction regarding the events yet to transpire. It is a thin line for commenters to walk to address how accurate any specualtions might be. Noting that one is incorrect is a tiny bit of a spoiler, as it eliminates one direction the story might take in upcoming episodes. I don't think it is factual to say that commenters take delight in pointing out where you've made a wrong guess about future events. Most comments about your guesses will be limited to pointing out where you've got a foundational fact wrong in building your speculation. One great thing about The Expanse is that it has vast entertainment value when it is re-watched. The stories unfold, and characters behave, just as expected, but it takes knowing the full stories to clearly see that truth, and seeing all the clues you missed first time around will put a lot of smiles on your faces.

So he was sad now because he couldn't get it and didn't mind hitting _ON_ Venus really hard while hugging Julie. He can't even decide and switches his girls so damn fast! 😁 Great reaction, I am looking forward to more of them, it's so much fun to watch your journey!

I am with Ty Franck (one of the authors) on this one: I don't like Miller and Julie kissing. According to the "Ty and that guy" podcast, this was an idea that Thomas Jane and the director came up with and insisted on doing. Spoils the scene for me a little. Julie does not know Miller after all, and their bond in this moment is not romantic, but something else.

I can't tell if this is serious but if it is I'm sorry! Even as a joke for older content I try to keep them from doing this bht this one slipped somehow. I take spoilers seriously even for other content so we try to keep it viewer friendly -Mikey

I definitely think it would be great to go back and re-watch some of the series highlight reactions and get your reactions of the reactions. I'd watch the heck out of that.

spoilers... . . . i think when miller took his helmet off his brain and memories were instantly touched by julie through the propmols and she instantly felt his love and knew his mind and so "you belong with me" was mutual between them.
