There's a great quote by Holden in the book Abadon's Gate, about how everybody has different theories about the protomolecule and what it is: "It killed humans, therefore it was a weapon. But radiation killed humans, and a medical X-ray machine wasn’t intended as a weapon. Holden was starting to feel like they were all monkeys playing with a microwave. Push a button, a light comes on inside, so it’s a light. Push a different button and stick your hand inside, it burns you, so it’s a weapon. Learn to open and close the door, it’s a place to hide things. Never grasping what it actually did, and maybe not even having the framework necessary to figure it out. No monkey ever reheated a frozen burrito."

JustA Body Haven't read the books either, but in season 1 the protomolecule infected a bunch of Protogen scientists who discovered it. Then they incinerated the evidence before anyone could discover it. This was discussed by Lopez & Holden in CQB.

I didn't think Naomi going back to the Rosci was weird. I think for her, for so long she's been wrestling with her identity as a Belter and her connections to the Rosci. She's constantly been clinging on to her identity as a Belter as being what defines her. It took her going back to the OPA for her to realize that she's outgrown the need to center herself upon her Belter heritage and is finally able to accept her feelings of being more connected to her Rosci family without any guilt or feeling like she's betraying her fellow Belters.

The show went for a technobabble hand-wave explanation for how Miller is appearing to Holden, but the book's version was actually very logical and cool: Book excerpt from the same scene as in this episode: Miller took off his hat and scratched his head. “So your brain has a hundred billion brain cells and about five hundred trillion synapses.” “Will this be on the test?” “Don’t be an asshole,” Miller said conversationally, and put his hat back on. “And that shit is custom grown. No two brains are exactly alike. Guess how much processing power it takes to really model even one human brain? More than every human computer ever built put together, and that’s before we even start getting to the crap that goes on inside the cells.” “Okay.” “Now picture those synapses as buttons on a keyboard. Five hundred trillion buttons. And say that a brain looking at something and thinking, ‘That’s a flower’ punches a couple billion of those keys in just the right pattern. Except it ain’t near that easy. It isn’t just a flower, it’s a pile of associations. Smells, the way a stem feels in your fingers, the flower you gave your mom once, the flower you gave your girl. A flower you stepped on by accident and it made you sad. And being sad brings on a whole pile of other associations.” “I get it,” Holden said, holding up his hands in surrender. “It’s complicated.” “Now picture you need to push exactly the right buttons to make someone think of a person, hear them speaking, remember the clothes they wore and the way they smelled and how they would sometimes take off their hat to scratch their head. So, yeah. The most complex simulation in the history of your solar system is running right now so that we can pretend I’m here in the same room with you. The correct response is being flattered."

It's not really technobabble, because it's all based on current scientific theories. I think they needed a short explaination for Miller's strange way of explaining himself. You can believe that the protomolecule is explaining how it actually works, or that it's using human's theories to stop Holden questions and focus on the instructions.
@anonymes2884
@anonymes2884 6 жыл бұрын
Hosseldon Fearanen Hmm, not really. 50% of it is technobabble i'd say (_possibly_ deliberately as a sort of sly in-joke for science-literate viewers). I like the book version more (not read them yet so that was new to me) but it's a lot of exposition for a TV episode. "non-local quantum hologram" Scientific terms but not a scientific concept (it's a "theory" proposed by Edgar Mitchell as to how consciousness works which he also claimed explains psychic phenomena). E.g. www.experiencer.org/the-quantum-hologram-and-the-nature-of-consciousness/ "phase conjugate adaptive waves resonating in microtubules in the brain" Again, scientific terms but the idea itself isn't science (from Edgar Mitchell again among others). Some serious, respected scientists propose quantum effects in cellular microtubules as being involved in how consciousness works (Roger Penrose likes them for instance although it's worth remembering he's a mathematical physicist not a neuroscientist) but it's far from a current scientific theory. "closed timelike curves" Yep, the idea of them at least is mainstream science (we don't know if they can actually exist in _our_ physical universe but they're common in sci-fi universes - it's time-travel basically). "Lorentzian manifold" Yep again, mainstream science (the 4 dimensional representation of space-time used in relativity is a Lorentzian manifold).

The non-local quantum thing was in reference to Miller. He was explaining how he was manifesting to Holden, as a "non-local quantum hologram," interacting through manipulation of Holden's brain matter. As to why Holden was chosen, it's because Miller knows Holden, and thinks of him in a certain way that informed the protomolecule's decisions about how to complete Miller's mission as the Investigator. As to what Miller's trying to do, he said it while mumbling in last week's episode. "It reaches out. 113 times a second, but no one answers. So it builds the Investigator." "I'm a tool that finds things. You're a tool that goes places"
@anonymes2884
@anonymes2884 6 жыл бұрын
Miller uses a few "sciencey" phrases at that point. Sounds like "non-local quantum hologram" , "phase conjugate adaptive waves resonating in microtubules in the brain" , "closed timelike curves" and "Lorentzian manifold". Normally these writers are pretty science literate (or at least someone in the staff is) so I wonder if the first two are a subtle but deliberate acknowledgment that they're waving their hands a bit here. The phrases use scientific terms but don't really mean much and are lifted almost verbatim from the writings of Edgar Mitchell, a former astronaut who became something of a "quantum woo" proponent on psychic phenomena. E.g. www.experiencer.org/the-quantum-hologram-and-the-nature-of-consciousness/ Or could just be the writers think he's right of course. "Closed timelike curves" (routes through space-time which loop back on themselves - time-travel basically) and "Lorentzian manifolds" (a 4 dimensional representation of space-time) are genuine physics terms though and found in general relativity (which makes sense given that the ring seems to be some sort of wormhole/event horizon).

Melba/Clarissa said specifically, "everything you FEARED about the proto-molecule has come to pass." That made me wonder if she isn't aware of the details of all the twisted shit he was responsible for while studying it. Also, I didn't really think it was a stretch for Naomi to go back. With all the various factions out there, the crew of the Rosci always seemed to represent *humanity* as opposed to some political/tribal interest. I think Naomi finally realized that her identity as a human meant more to her than being a Belter, specifically.
@allyourmoney
@allyourmoney 6 жыл бұрын
If she's going on conversations with her father than most likely his fear was of the protomolecule being taken out of their hands with no one in control of it. I seriously doubt that Jules Pierre would tell his daughter about the things he's done. In her eyes he's a pioneer that wanted to give the human race an evolutionary boost with it & now it's on the edge of the solar system doing who knows what. All the allegations of atrocities are probably just fake news to her. And no, it's not a stretch at all for Naomi to go back. She's been aboard the Behemoth for 6 months ( between episodes ) so that's plenty of time to realistically change her mind. To her, the Belt is in good hands. It's all about her life now.

There's something funny (or weird) that I've been noticing since the start of the season... all the spaceships are flying backwards. Or is it me? At first I thought that it was just the camera panning from the back of the ships moving towards the front.. but.. in open shots.. where you can see the ring in the background.. the ship's reactors are pointing towards it!! And one of you even mention it in the last episode.. "Is it entering backwards?" And then today some were forward, some were backwards.. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.. or have a serious case of "optical dyslexy"??...

Enrique Ortiz nope, that is 100% international. See, in the expanse there is no artificial gravity, no scientific macgufon to allow people to walk. Instead, they use a combinaison of 2 things to create believable realistic gravity. Gravity is one of the forces of the universe made by stuff with mass. An object with mass will experience gravity as a constant acceleration imposed on them. For example, earth impose on us an acceleration of 9.8 meters per second, or as we call it, 1G of acceleration. But now let's take a box in space, and put a thruster on it that makes the box accelerate at 9.8 ms. If you where in that bow there would be no way, what so ever, for you to differentiate being in a box on earth or an accelerating box in space. Now, ships in the expanse all run on espien fusion drives, the only crazy sci fi stuff with the protomolecule. Those drives are pretty much extremely efficient conventional drives that can work for very long periods without consuming too much fuel. As such, people in the expanse use those to generate artificial gravity. The spaceships in the expanse are all built vertically, with the "up" of the spacecraft being forward. To move around they use their main engine for long periods, running at whatever acceleration the people in the craft are comfortable with (so 1g for earth, and less for mars and the belt), and then midway though their destination, turn the whole ship around, and break with the main thrusters. That way the crew experience gravity for the entirety of the trip. Ships in this season are all flying backwards because they are all captured during a deceleration burn.

Great skit, one of your best imo. Now to clarify with Melba/Clarissa, her plan actually worked perfectly. Set the bomb, have the Roci's comms hacked with the fake message while shutting down weapons. A missile was launched and was supposed to kill Holden marked as a radical. Avenging her father and a bit of his reputation. She didn't account that the Roci could survive in the ring and that someone would find the bomb forced to murder someone. Now she's stuck with the possibility of being caught. I love her arc in the book, I'm sure you will too.

I'm still laughing at Miller's advanced physics lesson... "catch up...I'll wait" all that shit is actual Steven Hawking stuff---it really is. "Phase-conjugate adaptive waves originating in microtubules in the brain"--how the protomolecule is sending 'The Investigator' to Holden's mind (remember how many seconds elapse before the protomolecule gives up, kills that version of Miller, and makes another one; "Closed timelike curves in a Lorentzian manifold." space-time domains whose contents bend around to the starting point (forming a nice bottle) etc., etc.

You keep laying Julie's death at Mao's feet. He's not at fault for that. Julie's death was not something he wanted or willfully caused. When Julie was found, she was already long dead and infested with protomolecule. Mao wanted to find his daughter and bring her home after she ran away to the belt. He knew she had gone to Ceres, but he had no idea what she was doing or where she was during the entire first season until her corpse was discovered. How can Mao be "directly responsible" for her death if he didn't know where she was until after she died? Julie learned about the transport carrying the protomolecule from Phoebe. She believed it was a weapon her father's company was developing. So she joined the OPA mission to hijack the transport. The Protogen scientists and guards on the transport locked her up but did not kill her. The ship unintentionally had been infected at some point, probably when it was loaded on Phoebe. And the infection spread and killed everyone on board except Julie. Julie shut the ship down and hid it. Then escaped to Eros not realizing she was also infected. She later died alone in a motel room overcome with infection. I'm not trying to make Mao out to be a good guy, he's definitely not. He willfully sacrificed a lot of people in pursuit of learning about the protomolecule. And he definitely deserves to be in prison and not running his company after the decisions that resulted in so many deaths. However, Julie was already dead before he made any decisions regarding how to handle her situation.

The projection of Miller into Holden's mind is because Holden experienced Miller when they were in Eros.

I think you guys may be right about the aliens being gone. Maybe that's the crime scene Miller keeps talking about. Maybe the protomolecule can't make contact with them and it's trying to find out why? Also, I wonder if Julie will appear to her sister?

In EP7, they showed Bobbie (talking to Alex) aboard MCRN Xuesen - the same martian ship that followed the Roci inside the Ring.
