I love how when she first says she's going to rain hellfire down, he looks sort of surprised in an amused "oh, this is new, you're really going for bluster?" sort of way, turning into genuine fear as he realises it's NOT bluster. Unlike him and so many other rich and powerful people, she turned down an opportunity to flee Earth and get somewhere (temporarily) safe, she decided to live or die with her citizens, she said her goodbyes to her beloved husband, and she is fucking PISSED enough that she is absolutely willing to destroy her own career to punish Mao.
@daniel_tenner Жыл бұрын
I'm listening to the books atm, and though there is a lot of divergence in how the plot plays out, I wouldn't be too surprised if part of the intent of this scene is she's not actually just talking about Mao, she's talking to Errinwright and telling him what she's going to be doing to him if he gets in her way and turns out to be involved... She's pretty aggressive, the Old Lady.
@hfar_in_the_sky Жыл бұрын
Another element that I think retroactively elevates both this scene and the scene where he turns on her is when Errinwright's finally arrested and he unloads about how much he hates Secretary-General Sorrento-Gillis and why. There he lays out that he absolutely despises Sorrento-Gillis for being a weak willed politician who cares more about his public image and covering his ass then actually doing good by the people of Earth. Because say what you will about Errinwright, he acted on genuine conviction. And knowing that Errinwright holds such high contempt for spineless politicians and applying it to this scene, I think he's genuinely taken aback Avasarala's willingness to put her reputation and political career on the line to bring in a man who she considers to be a legitimate threat to the safety of the system. But I think his respect for her only went up. A part of me even wonders if he was considering leaving everything in her hands. And later when he turns on Avasarala after she tries to broker a deal with Mao, to me it seemed like there was genuine bitterness and disappointment when he was talking to her. I think perhaps on some level he was disappointed she didn't continue her commitment to rain hellfire down upon Mao, even though it was logical and practical to bring him in the way she did. Certainly not trying say "Errinwright did nothing wrong," rather I think it's a facet to explain why he did what he did in the manner in which he did it.

Naomi is the most "feminine", she's incredibly smart and capable, but her emotions and maternal instincts take the best of her. Draper is the most balanced one, she's very emotional but also strong and assertive. The male characters also have that, they sit on different points between the typical feminine and masculine traits. Which is a great way to make characters if you ask me, that way you get rounded personalities and realistic diversity.

Magnificent writing here. My friend read all of the books in the The Expanse series, which were written before the TV series was made, and he says they're even better. They're much longer, so everything about them is deeper and more complex at the same time. A scene like this is a good example. It's complex and doesn't turn out the way you think it will and knocks your socks off. There are a lot more scenes that are at that level in the novels, he says, much though he loved the TV series, too. Thank you for leaving this scene up even though the show is no longer made. It's still in rotation on Amazon, and I'm rewatching it. I'd recommend a second viewing to everyone in light of the lameoh-level shows Amazon is making now ... and hardly any of them, either.

@@zjames4699 Leaning on Mao's family is not remotely the "ethical" thing to do, but given the circumstances, after narrowly-dodging an extinction-level impact event and staring down the metaphorical gun barrels of the MCRN, Chrisjen choosing to be an unapologetically vicious bitch towards the man most responsible for setting all of it in motion is a comparatively miniscule price to pay. This isn't her usual MO. She only goes straight for the jugular when a lot of lives are in danger. So people are okay with this sort of thing because she doesn't abuse her power lightly. We all know, of course, that any _real_ world politician would be more akin to what you just said, though. It's funny, really. At least in the show, though not necessarily in the novels, she's actually _not_ that good of a politician. She's too hamfisted and at times, too tactless, but she has a fundamentally solid grasp of the stakes and the big picture and can thus justify her actions in accordance with how they serve them. So despite being arguably a poor _politician,_ she's a good _leader._ She knows when to be compassionate, and when to be ruthless, and her ultimate goal isn't self-advancement, it's the long-term welfare of her people, and the system as a whole.

@@zjames4699 nah, no need - if politicians had the moral fiber of Chrisjen, corruption would be over or at a very low level, because this is the kind of politician that GET SHIT DONE without the desire for power because she knows what power in the end is: the heaviest of duties, and because of that, must never be stained by the arrogance and the madness of the rich, the warmongers, and the greedy.
