Far away objects in space look tiny, even through amazing telescopes. You can't ID a spacecraft like that unless you are pretty close. The drive exhaust / thrust plumes, however are very bright and (if they were real they would also be very) very long - much longer than the craft itself. They can be analysed by the colours of visible and invisible light they emit - the details of the spectrum. This can be done from further away. This is what the "drive signature" refers to. Today we can tell what the Sun is made of, what the upper atmosphere of Jupiter is made of, whether a lamp is sodium or halogen, etc. by looking at emission and absorption spectra. In the show, they change the ships' drive signatures by changing the fuel mix, burn efficiency, adding contaminants, etc. A poorly maintained drive, for example, might have a plume contaminated by small amounts of the metal being eroded from the drive cone. It's a bit like analysing tail-pipe emissions, but (very) remotely.

This is the "best" season only because it contains two book finales, and all the book finales are fantastic. They showed us in the finale of last season that Mei and Strickland are on Io. We had to wait a full year for each season.

The "signature" theyre referring to is the radiation emitted by their main drive. Each engine (in the world of the show) emits a slightly different spectra of radiation as it burns fuel.

What Naomi was changing was the transponder code (which is a digital radio transmission) broadcast by the ship, akin somewhat to the "squawk codes" assigned to current day aircraft, but more permanent and, I guess, alphanumeric. This is the primary way ships identify each other. Separately, ships can identify each other by their "drive signatures," which is more like what you guys were talking about with the sonic signatures used to identify submarines (at least, as much as I imagine that top-secret technology would work 🙄). That's a little harder to change, since they're basically about physics, though there are things a good engineer (like, say, Naomi) can do to alter the drive signatures.... a bit. And probably with only limited success. But it's better than nothing. Again, I'm sure real world analogs exist. You'll see more references to drive signatures as identifiers in later episodes and seasons, but at this point in the show they were still mainly talking about transponders. Oh, and you can still call it the Roci. Everybody does, regardless of what the transponder says. There are a lot of varied opinions about which seasons are the best. Most people seem to put 3 first, with 5 as a close second. Some put 5 first. A few put 2 or 6 or even 1 or 4 first. I'd encourage you guys (as if you need me to say this, but I will anyway) to draw your own conclusions. Regardless of rankings, most people agree that even the poorest episodes of this show are better than a lot of other stuff out there, so, you know, it's all relative...

Plus, they can alter the shape of their ship by for examle putting gas tanks around the hull like they did in season 1 (Though the Roci doesn't have the neccessary materials here now) but the looks don't matter so much in space as "the navy guy" 😉 has pointed out.

For real world examples we can use the frequency of electricity to make decent geolocation guesses.

I think you misread that pole. Literally no fan thinks Season 4 is one of the best. That would be 3 and 5, with a close nod to the second half of 2.

Fred told them to not bother coming back…IF they found Protomolecule and DIDNT bring it back to him. BUT, Naomi (a crew member of the Rocinante) DID give him the Protomolecule. The Rocinante brought the element that brought balance to the Belt. They are BUSSOM BUDDIES FOREVER now!
