I don't know how many times I've watched this scene but it is as close to perfection as a scene in television/cinema can be. The tension builds with every camera shot-even when you know what's coming, you can feel it rising. The tension then breaks loose into white-knuckle action that comes to a climax with Miller's intervention. And then the release of the tension is followed by the perfect denouement: "James Holden. . . shit just follow you around, don't it, kid?" Perfection. Every single bit of it.

They did such a great job using a gunfight to silently describe Amos. Holden interprets Naomi's "Maybe take Amos," as "take Amos because he's big and tough and intimidating if he has to be." Which is why Holden says no. But most of the reason that Amos is dangerous is that he has the instincts & experience that Holden, our idealistic captain, does not have or even consider. Which is why they don't get turned into swiss cheese. He also doesn't shoot Miller, but he's absolutely ready to. He's got better firefight training than our two ACTUAL military veterans. (Yes, I know they were navy, I just find it hilarious).

Gawd the tension and layers of everyone's different intentions in this scene were masterful. It was building to a knifedge and just snapped like a life smashing into glass.

I just got to this part in the first book. They did a great job with this scene, actually a better shootout overall in the show, but it covers all the same beats. The one part I wish they included though was the shootout actually starting with the women pulling a small plastic gun on Holden, and then Amos takes a huge pistol out of his jacket and points it at her face and says "Mine's bigger".
