Exploring Manhood part 2 - the original concept and cultivation of masculinity. Today were looking at the ancient ideals of arete and andreia in Greece, and manly virtu to the Romans. Arete was a greek word to refer to excellence; physical, mental, and moral excellence. Arete, along with andreia, were at the center of the ancient Greek concept of manhood. Virtus or virtu was the roman equivalent. These ideas and stories around masculinity were critical in the cultivation of embodied men in ancient times.
