I was blown away when I found out that South Korea made VHS of theatrical releases all the way through 2009, I discovered that on Ebay when I was looking for a rare 2001 French film called "Gamer" on VHS and to my shock a VHS of the 2009 Gerard Butler film popped it and it wasn't a bootleg, it was an official release. Blew my mind that VHS releases of theatrical movies were still happening that late overseas(I know Japan's last VHS release was Ponyo but South Korea appears to have continued until like 2012 or so).

One of the common theories about the US VHS tapes for cars was what they only produced one copy for each order made on the Disney club website, that would explain why it’s so rare nowadays, because many people didn’t order the VHS copy since DVD’s already were in full swing. That would also explain why the vhs doesn’t have any previews and just starts the movie when it’s inserted into the VHS player.
@tylerlarsen1842 Жыл бұрын
After watching the video, I just want to point out that Junko's copy isn't the US release, it's the CANADIAN release! It's hard to notice if you're not looking for it, but as someone who lives in Canada, I instantly noticed the Canadian Home Video Rating symbol, not just on the VHS copy but also on Junko's DVD copy. Unless I am mistaken, you would NEVER see a CHVR symbol on a US copy of a particular film.

Something interesting I have noticed is that Cars was the final Disney/Pixar Movie to be THX certified on DVD. Which means it was the final movie to have the THX deep note logo (mainly being Tex 1 or 2). Every Disney/Pixar movie DVD release afterward (as far as I am aware of) isn't THX certified. So, for the most part, Cars kinda was the final point for Disney/Pixar releases before moving on from VHS and THX. Oh, and it was the final Disney/Pixar movie to be made before Disney bought Pixar, and the final movie to be made with the help of Joe Ranft before his death during production, and I think it was also the final film to use the blue background 3D Disney castle before they started using the more realistic castle logo we know today. Man, this movie really was the finale for some of the iconic moments from Disney/Pixar movies from 1995 to 2006 all things considered.

Fun fact, to make this release and the 4:3 version of the DVD, they actually rendered Cars at 1920 x 1080, the full 16:9 or 1.77:1 aspect ratio Blu-ray was capable of when released. We only ever see 1920 x 803 with the widescreen version because it's at a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. They chose a specific section of the picture to show with the widescreen release so the action remained centred, moving the picture vertically only, we still see the full width. It was likely known that the vertical resolution was higher since there is more vertical picture on the VHS and fullscreen DVD, but it was fully proven in the Cars 3 bonus features. They show sections of the first film as the full 1920 x 1080 version, and it looks amazing. I really wish that version could be added to Disney+ like they have added other versions of films where different aspect ratios are available.

Destiny Deoxys is interesting because there’s a scene towards the end that is really hard on MPEG-2 compression (the Blu-ray version basically maxes out the bitrate in that scene), so that part might actually look better on VHS.
@S-Video11 ай бұрын
Oh, yeah! Those green cubes moving. I’ve watched Buena Vista’s Destiny Deoxys DVD on an SDTV and an HDTV - no compression artifacts noticed. I did turn on the bitrate meter when I watched the film and saw it rise when the green cubes go down an alley causing an old man to fall off a bridge. My HDTV sure does reveal compression artifacts on cramped DVDs like VeggieTales Jonah (movie on disc twice, low-budget encoder), but Buena Vista’s pan and scan Destiny Deoxys yielded none. The main feature alone on Buena Vista’s Destiny Deoxys DVD was six and a quarter gigabytes. The DVDs that came after Buena Vista were single layer and the whole image file totaled to three and three-quarters gigabytes. This means the post-Buena Vista copies might have compression artifacts, but I have not watched them to see if that’s the case. Your Blu-ray is post-Buena Vista, but since it’s Blu-ray, I’m sure it looks flawless even if it is single layer. I have the VHS but have not watched it. I didn’t notice compression artifacts on Buena Vista’s DVD, so I have no desire to check.

My weird, obscure favorite physical media thing is Toy Story 10th Anniversary on UMD for the Playstation Portable. It's such a strange release because it's specifically branded as the 10th Anniversary version, like the DVD release, but it barely has any of the special features of its DVD counterpart since it needs to run on, you know, a PSP. It's also hilarious since it was Disney's one and only UMD release. I can understand Vinyl & even tapes but why collect CDs? You could just find lossless flac 1:1 copies online. There's nothing interesting inside them...but to each their own i guess
@JetWolfEX Жыл бұрын
@@OrangeYTT I have several good reasons Some albums I own are not available or backed digitally, either because of scarcity/obscurity or because of DMCA takedowns. It's always an ongoing problem with copyrighted music. I think there are interesting things inside albums, many have exclusive artwork, composer interviews, and helpful tracklists that a digital player can't integrate as easily and those would have to be downloaded if they have been scanned by someone, and again those get taken down with copyright as well. I can connect a player to PC and have my own hi-res copies of album art or any other extras that might be included on the CD, some albums have images and extra content stored on them. CD players have more playback options than digital ones like live fast forward/rewind which doesn't seem to work on digital players I've used. Vinyl or tapes degrade faster from being used (all three formats will rot over time) and usually don't have as good sound quality. I can easily rip and back up any CD I find, tapes and records are more complicated or need to be recorded instead which loses sound quality. Less storage on either medium so they usually are incomplete albums. Record and tape players need more maintenance and cost more to fix. The rest is all preference, I download when there is no official option, Digital isn't a bad choice when it's an option.

I ended up cutting out some more insight into his situation for the sake of brevity but if you go on the thread, it's a really peculiar situation. Many ask him similar questions and he simply just thinks owning it on VHS is neat. The others suggest he go to a Suncoast Video store to place an order for Sky High on VHS but he says it's too far from him (93 miles away i think it was). And then he goes on to say that Disney Video's website will let him place an order for Sky High on VHS OVER THE PHONE but he can't do it because his parents won't let him so the thread his him begging anyone to place the order for him. It's really weird and makes no sense since he's asking strangers on the internet to help him. It just seems like his parents set weird rules for him, probably a young teenager? But honestly thank god for him for being a specific type of weird because if he wasn't, we probably wouldn't have much documented specifics about these VHS releases.

@@raptorfromthe6ix833 VHS tapes were kind of waning by the early 2000’s, as home media had releases on both VHS and DVD albeit DVDs tended to be more expensive so VHS was still seen as the cheaper option. But by the mid 2000’s VHS was pretty much rendered obsolete, not to mention it can take longer to print and develop film. And then Blu Ray further killed VHS, and arguably may have started killing DVDs as well.

As a South Korean, you earned a sub :) ahh the memories! At least in my town, same time around 2005, the owner guy began stocking the shelves with DVDs because he could charge more money(new tech) and slimmer = more DVDs. After all, that was the only reason why we upgraded into a LG DVD VHS combo. I had no idea even Avatar had a VHS because the rental place closed down before that movie came out. As for why we had VHS for so long... It could be simply explained as more demand. Need I remind you, Koreans in the 2000s weren’t as materialistic(as we do today); consumerism culture hadn’t been fully absorbed in people’s minds, especially in the provinces and smaller cities outside Seoul. As for the dubbed Ratatouille, I am 1000% sure a subbed version is also out there. It was pretty common to have a dubbed and subbed versions released simultaneously, especially for kids. My parents obviously would’ve got me the dubbed version because I need to listen to more English lol. Yea hit me up if you want one
@Art_kore11 ай бұрын
yeah, there was a subbed Ratatouille, but those subbed versions of anime are rather hard to find now. I'd usually find 10-15 Korean dubs for 1 English version!

One thing I feel you should have brought up is that not all VHS releases of Cars are as expensive as the American one, since they were actually sold in retail. If I recall the Polish and Japanese versions of Cars on VHS goes for only a few hundred dollars and those are the other two I have heard of. I think PatMac went deep into it in his VHS video.

The Polish one isn't actually that expensive but I've only seen it pop up on, you guessed it, Polish websites, a copy was sold in 2023 for just 5 dollars and there's actually an opening of it on KZbin and it has the One Man Band short, which makes it the only known Cars VHS with that short included. Meanwhile for the Japanese one, it isn't as expensive as the DMC-exclusive or maybe even the Korean one (paid 50 dollars for a copy on Yahoo Auctions), but it is incredibly difficult to come across by, iirc only 3 listings have appeared in the 2020's, one as part of a lot and the other two individually, I'm still feeling incredibly lucky that I managed to snag that latest listing.

I switched to DVD really early.... at around the end of 1998 or early 1999 and bought my first bluray movie in 2008 so I wouldn't have had a chance of even thinking about getting this movie on VHS but it's nice to see that Disney kept making VHS tapes until the beginning of the Bluray era since a lot of people are a lot slower to move to newer formats, and still need these, I'm also not surprised that it came with no previews since even now a lot of DMC EXCLUSIVES still come completely bare bones, I wouldn't be surprised if this has always been the case for a lot of their exclusive releases, since the movie is what most people get these for .....

Honestly a bummer that Cars on VHS was such an afterthought that there aren't any previews or bonus features on it (and this film certainly had some on the DVD release), for years I thought the reason I couldn't find footage of it online was because the tape was so rare, but nope, it just didn't exist to begin with. Though I wonder if the South Korean version of Cars on VHS is different, which I guess so, since the tapes shown in this video had previews. Also the version of Cars I have on DVD is the Wal-Mart-exclusive version (which they advertised by giving the Wal-Mart truck it's own car-sona), which has a bonus DVD that has the behind-the-scenes of the music video of Rascal Flats' cover of Life Is A Highway.

As someone born in '89, who grew up with VHS, I find the recent fascination with the medium to be odd. Unless it's one of those that has exclusive content on it for whatever reason, I've always been glad to have been able to move away from them. Not that I disliked them when I was younger, but I pretty much never looked back once we got a DVD player. I don't really have nostalgia for watching the format again. If ever I do, it's only due to the other classic reason that it just reminds me of a simpler time three decades ago, not because the format is anything to write home about. And unless it has been well preserved, the sound or video is likely to be corrupted now due to the tape deteriorating, and that actually just makes me feel sad about them, like pieces of my childhood are aging and dying along with me.

Idk about this channel, but I've always liked VHS more because there's only so many dirty skipping DVDs little kid me could handle. Growing up, DVDs would always get dirty and annoying but I could always count on a VHS to work! Also I've heard off hand from the internet (so take that with a grain of salt) that VHS is preferred because analog audio just hits different, and in a way many people prefer. Something about how they record sound for a VHS rather than a DVD, so that leads people to prefer VHS.

There are a few of these tapes (Cars, Herbie, Chicken Little and 2 others) at the school I work at in the old AV closet within the former media center. My guess for the school owning them was for it to be used with the in-school television network to show movies to the kids on the TV's that were used until around 2012-2015 during early dismissal day or holidays or the day before spring, summer, winter recess. Besides the VHS tapes there are a few Betamax tapes, Lazer Disc, a few real-to-real film reals of snow white and other Disney films. There are few film mediums I'm unfamiliar with such as a film cartridge that is the size of a Lazer Disc but looks like a VHS/Betamax hybrid. There is also a slideshow projector story book with stills from the movies and an accompanying audio tape with the audio track from the film (snow white and other story book films from the 70s and before).

We used to have this family-owned local daycare in my town that I went to as a kid. Every day after lunch, they’d lay out mats on this large carpet, everyone would get out their blankets and pillows, and we would all watch a movie. They had a VHS player and a DVD player, so the corner where they kept all the movies had a HUGE stack that was a mix of DVDs and Tapes. I’m pretty sure they did happen to have Cars on VHS, and I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if they did keep it after the daycare shut down.
