The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor is a fifth-generation, single-seat, twin-engine, all-weather stealth tactical fighter aircraft developed for the United States Air Force (USAF). The result of the USAF's Advanced Tactical Fighter program, the aircraft was designed primarily as an air superiority fighter, but also has ground attack, electronic warfare, and signal intelligence capabilities. The prime contractor, Lockheed Martin, built most of the F-22's airframe and weapons systems and did its final assembly, while Boeing provided the wings, aft fuselage, avionics integration, and training systems.
The aircraft was variously designated F-22 and F/A-22 before it formally entered service in December 2005 as the F-22A. After a protracted development and despite operational issues, the USAF considers the F-22 critical to its tactical air power, and says that the aircraft is unmatched by any known or projected fighter. The Raptor's combination of stealth, aerodynamic performance, and situational awareness gives the aircraft unprecedented air combat capabilities.
The high cost of the aircraft, a lack of clear air-to-air missions due to delays in Russian and Chinese fighter programs, a ban on exports, and development of the more versatile F-35 led to the end of F-22 production. A final procurement tally of 187 operational production aircraft was established in 2009, and the last F-22 was delivered to the USAF in 2012.
But why do I love this fighter jet?
Hope you enjoy!

oh you did not just that the f35 is a good plane. that thing is so shit its unbelievable its big, its fat, its slow. it can't carry many weapons it can't turn.its computer system is prone to errors, and to top it off it cost 1 trillion dollars to design it. its expensive to produce, and only has 1 engine that if you hit it it dies. so it is the shittiest plane America has ever made.

I worked in Marietta when the F-22 was rolling off the Lockheed production line. They would test fly them before the final paint job so they had a pale green primer color. Also they always had a F-16 chase plane. There was Lockheed, Dobbins AFB, and Dobbins Naval Air Station using the same airfield. Over the years I've seen there: C-5, C-130, A-7, A-4, A-10, F-14, F-15, F-16, F-18, F-22, B-1, and TR-1. TR-1 was by far the most impressive. It popped up from behind the tree line in what appeared to be a 75° climb and quickly disappeared through a medium height cloud layer. C-5 is a close second but that's because something that fricken big shouldn't be able to fly. Buddy said he saw a B-2 close to the airfield flying low and slow. My guess would be a touch and go. Only thing still there that I know of is a ANG transport squadron. C-130s with crews logging time. Love watching them make quick approaches. Might be a transport but empty they are pretty agile.

I'm a retired airborne infantryman. I jumped many different aircraft including the C17 and C130. The Hercules is an extremely capable aircraft. I've been on board in all different kinds of weather and training scenarios. It is highly maneuverable for its size and extremely reliable/durable. The only downside was the cargo net seating for the paratroopers and it was pretty cramped for 64 troopers to pile in there, but those aren't the fault of the aircraft. C17s are bigger and more efficient, and we got our own seats but I'll always have a soft spot for the ol Hercules. Never jumped a Galaxy as supposedly the jump exit speed was too close to stall speed for the aircraft. No clue if that's true or just rumor mill bs, but it sounded reasonable when I heard it.

Bang on mate - I don't feel the F22 has bad it's chance to shine (or keep shining), especially since in marketing and politically pressuring other nations to take on the enormous debt buying fleets of the F35 that continues to run over budget and the software still riddled with bugs - no way all the defense contractors (and shareholders) involved are going to see a loss, so the pressure is applied - sad AND is slightly reminiscent of what happened when England lost the incredible TSR 2 to USA's strong arming and ended up with the F111....
@Kman31ca

I think by the mid 2020's, there is a possibility we see a newer version of the F-22. The Pentagon has changed policy to more of upgrading existing platforms to peak performance, instead of massive brand new projects that are just to costly, ie F-35. Yes it will still be pricey, but building a 6th gen new platform would be a lot more costly plus delays. F-22 with the brains of the F-35 would be a logical place to go, as well as new stealth tech. More of a 5.5 gen aircraft. I just can't see the US building a brand new 6th gen air superiority fighter from scratch after the delays and cost overruns of the F-35. Which could make an upgraded F-22 the far cheaper proposal.

@Akm72 7 жыл бұрын
That lack of an annoying metal strip appears to be part of the reason they haven't been able to fit a helmet mounted display to the F-22. Also it means you can't eject through the canopy. Annoying metal strips are there for a reason! Also annoying metal strips aren't that big a deal in the real world (compared to PC flying games) as our eyes are far enough apart to see past it for the most part.

They have done everything to prove there worth. My cousin use to be in the military and use to tell me story's about watch A-10's ground pounding targets they get really get into easily. If I had to pick ONE reason why the F-22 is awesome; I'd say it's those twin P&W F119 engines. Flying perfection, the amount of thrust it has beggars belief. Mach 1.85 supercruise (if not more ). Kind of makes me sad we will never see a "Streak Raptor" like we did the Streak Eagle back in the 70's. The results out of such a program would probably cause a collective instantaneous hardon to all aviation enthusiasts.
@Akm72
@Akm72 7 жыл бұрын
I think it's usually rated at Mach 1.6 'supercruise' rather than Mach 1.85. Which is not to say it can't make Mach 1.85 under ideal conditions (reduced fuel load, ideal meteorology, whatever), but that is beyond what they normally claim. If I wanted to be really anal about it I would also point out that supercruise is really when the best-range cruising speed is supersonic which does not appear to be the case with F-22. The 'real' supercruisers are aircraft like the B-70, SR-71 and Concorde.

There is nothing like it pound for pound in the sky. As for the f35, when it is deployed in the numbers anticipated, there is no air force in the world that will be able to defeat it. The f35 is a sensor data honey pot, when networked with all US weapons platforms it will simply eliminate the enemy. It's flight performance and range limitations will be compensated for by new improved missiles, wingman drones, refuelers, missile trucks like the new f15x and of course packs of Raptors prowling the skies...😎

I'd love to see 400 of these in the USAF 200+ in both the UK and Israel and why not Japan too! It's worth the price and it's the best Air Superiority Fighter period. I’ve been closely following this aircraft since the YF-22/YF-23 program was first introduced, and the whole project has been done in a way that’s far more ingenious than it’s exterior might convey… especially at anything but a close distance. I happen to live in Anchorage, Alaska, where Raptors fly over my house every day, and have seen it many times at Elmendorf AFB demos. It never fails that during the Raptor demo’s initial rocket-like climb on takeoff, hundreds of us watching it just laugh hysterically. We accept it more calmly now, but believe me, that first demo literally drew gasps from a highly-informed aviation crowd. It's a lot of fun to watch at airshow demos, at relatively-slow speeds, but what it can actually do at speed and altitude, which we practically never see, is far more amazing. I make my living doing 3D modeling of mostly aviation/aerospace projects, and since 1997, have created 3D models of it four different times now, as software and hardware have improved. It’s amazing design hides (and exposes) many unique properties. If you like this sort of thing, check my article (free, of course) on building the model, at www.mikejamesmedia.com/raptor_2015_upres_01.html. (Plenty more aviation geek details in the article.) You’re right about the future… All the major players have said that the F-22 and F-35 might be the last manned fighters built by the military. That’s probably a bit optimistic, but still, it’s where the whole world is headed, eventually. PS> Trolls will always troll, so don’t let it make you sweat. The fact is that unless you’re an actual pilot of one of these aircraft, and willing to divulge classified information on KZbin, there’s nobody here that knows exactly how these aircraft compare.

I love the Raptor. In my opinion the US should've just continued producing the F22 instead of wasting trillions on the F35. Not saying that the F35 is bad but those trillions of dollars could've been used to make dozens of F22 Raptors.

It's 1.5 trillion over the next few decades including all new jets, not like they spent 'trillions' on R&D alone. The cost per jet isn't comparable anymore. But I agree that more F22s were needed.

Multi role? What was the f22 used for? Oh, to drop some bombs. What's the f35 supposed to do? Shit, the same thing.... I agree with Stephen in his post above. It's an awfully expensive exercise to create a plane when there's one that can already do it proficiently. The f35 was continued because it was too big to fail, and guaranteed a few MIC companies decades of funding. It didn't matter how many negative and ACCURATE reports about how fucked it was, the right votes had been bought and paid for. Exactly the same case with the Patriot missile, that couldn't hit a Scud. And it was RIDICULOUS to call the f22 outdated, (in the video) when you have 40 year old aircraft flying. A few upgrades and it's state of the art again.

The Raptor is hands down the best air superiority fighter ever made. Some people disagree, but one on one there is no plane in the world that would ever get within visual range of a raptor (unless the Raptor pilot wanted them to), and god help them even if they did. It blows my mind to think that the F22 Raptor is 1990's technology, over two decades old. I can't wait to see the upcoming Penetrating Counter Air (PCA) fighter the USAF is developing next, though I doubt it will be anywhere near as beautiful as the Raptor.

The F-35 is said to have better stealth characteristics than the F-22, especially against radars that are not X-band. On top of that, the F-22 relies entirely on radar, and the F-35 has a more advanced radar, IRST, and 360 degree IR sensors. the info is all there if u look it up but I'm not saying that the pak fa is better then f22 or the f22 is better then pak fa.. both planes are not test and no I'm not talking about like the gulf war were its a mess match t72 vs m1 but if u guys want to call fighting a 3rd world country battle tested hahaha

Lenka Utsugi I'm not sure anyone is saying this aircraft, has been tested by it's flight hours against a 3rd world country. Because, if you have any sense whatsoever..., you'd understand, that just would not be a smart thing to do. Now, when they are tested in the real war games, that are put together to exactly test just how capable this aircraft is. Than you can kind of go around, and say this aircraft has tested exceptionally well.

F22 is such a great plane, too bad it can't fly half the time because you know, maintenance and running costs. Costs too much, expensive to run, means cannot train pilots with enough hours on the plane. I mean for the same price of a single F-22 you can get like 4 Rafale M, and each Rafale can sortie 4x as much as a F-22. Sometimes, numbers beat quality.

Btw 'raptor' doesn't refer to dinosaurs necessarily, 'raptor' is just another word for a bird of prey like an eagle or hawk. I don't think the F-22 is named after a dromaeosaur as although they were bird-like in appearance (due to their feathers etc), they were, after all, *flightless* reptiles. A fighter jet named after a dinosaur would have been cool, but I think they were thinking more 'bird of prey' and less 'Jurassic Park' when they chose that name :)

It’s the successor of the fighter I grew up with and it’s engine roar had the nickname “the sound of freedom”. I’m talking about the F-15 eagle, when on scouting camps we regularly hiked passed Soesterberg airbase in the Netherlands where those birds of prey were stationed and I fell in love with them, the Dutch government at that time was stupid not to buy the F-15 but the F-16. I really hope the F-22 will be as good or better.

One could argue that the F-117 Nighthawk is technically a 5th Generation plane due to its stealth capabilities... I've heard both sides of the debate tho. Russia's new T-50 will be a great plane and will compete with the F-22 on many levels but it's also almost 20 years newer than the Raptor. First F-22 test flight was in 1991... First T-50 test flight was in 2010! Amazing how advanced our technology is that a brand new plane is aiming to compete with a 20-year old design!

anthony O'DONNELL is a great plane,in which the maneuverability can even out do the raptor,especially with the 3D thrust vectoring,although stealth was in mind in its design,the stealth will still be unmatched by the f22,literary as far as we can tell by over a thousand times...but I really can’t say anything,lord knows what radar it will be packing.

personally the way i see things going is that Russian jets will develop more countermeasures to close the distance so they can dogfight. From what I know US fighters are superior at a distance and the Russian jets are mean dogfighters. for every new weapon thats made someone thinks of how to negate it or counter it

"Only 120 of them (F-22s) are combat capable." Really? You're gonna go there? Should Lockheed nave been allowed to build the 749 that the USAF planned originally? Ehh, maybe. But come back to me AFTER the UK has more than 200 Challenger 2s in hand, or have more than ZERO aircraft carriers that are "combat capable". Or maybe wait until France has more Leclerc tanks, or at least more than a handful more, than does the UAE. I could go on through the rest of NATO, where only a few actually DO (though barely) spend the "guideline" figure of 2% of GDP on defense, while the US ponies up about 4% in contrast. Of course were there an export market for these fighters there may be a greater incentive to restart the production . . . though God forbid this takes funds and sales away from Airbus or other "Eurofighter" suppliers. Hey, we can't let THAT happen, can we? I can't stand Trump. But when he says that NATO is full of crap, and that Americans have gotten sick of it . . . well, he's full of it and sickening too, but he ain't totally wrong.

Yep the UKs force list is terrible ans so are many other countries. US is by far the largest economy and airforce and I have to agree I don't think 120 F22s is enough for the USAF. Congress forbid the export of the F22 not anyone else, a few coutries may have bought it but it is top end equipment and very expensive which doesn't tend to export well. The Typhoon is not doing well with export against the French Rafale for similar reasons.

the failures of our allies and enemies to show a high level of readiness does not and never will excuse us of our own failures. USAF should have at the very least doubled the numbers of F22's, but when you see what the operating numbers are for the USAF in other airframes, it won't surprise you. Highly "vulnerable" (individually, without external protection systems such as fighter cover and AA systems) aircraft such as the E-3. E-8, and RC-135 are in short supply, the USAF is stuck with limited conventional jet-powder nuclear capable cruise bombers due to treaties such as START 2, of which can provide a good incentive not to use counter-force [nuclear] strategies in a first world rivalry gone hot. Even tankers such as the 135 are supposed to be replaced by the 46, but not at a 1:1 ratio (a "based on 767" tanker that has so many changes that the 767 claim is really irrelevant, so don't look for part interchangability with the italian, japanese, and isreali designs). A design that has the same fuel capacity (official sources say it can only carry 212K of fuel, and that the KC135 can only carry 200K offically, yet they have fuel tables for up past the "200k" fuel load in our W&B chart.) USAF is trying to "trim the fat" in it's fleet, which while can be a good thing, can also be detrimental if those who make the procurement decisions decide that actual meat is fat. Losses will always happen in conflict, and if we do not force the governments of said governments to have replacement capabilities for said losses that are realistic even under the most idiotic of circumstances, they will see failure some day.
