"The sound of freeom," my friend. I think the only engine louder than the Typhoon might be the F-35, since they had to pack a gigantic amount of thrust in a single engine. They're having trouble finding bases for them in the U.S. since residential homeowners complain about the noise. The premier east coast base, NAS Oceana, won't have any for this reason. My understanding is they're trying to get some for Atlantic City International Airport in the Air National Guard so they can have a squadron that can respond QRA to threats to New York, Philadelphia and DC quickly.

I hope that when Perú has a budget, it will buy Eurofighter Tranche version 2.3 fighters from England, the United Kingdom from Bae System will also buy Rafale fighters from France, these European fighters are like 100.130 million euros more, you cannot buy combat fighters from Russia for the economic sanctions that can destroy the economy of Peru and neither buy combat fighters from the US and to South Korea, Peru and the US are allies because a Peruvian ambassador named Rivera Schreiber warned the United States months before the Pearl Harbor attack, the Peruvian was honored in the US, the problem is that the Americans make restrictions there will be problems with spare parts components the same is going to happen with the South Korean fighters because there were problems with the KAI KT-1 from Peru, Peru used British military weapons in the armed conflict of Cenepa we used British Canberra fighter-bombers, in the years 1975 to 1978, the government Peruvian wanted to acquire an aircraft carrier from England when Peru could have declared war on Chile, the English government had no impediment and the British said that if they could sell the aircraft carrier to Peru, Peru had the British British fighter-bombers Canberra and the Hawk Hunters to attack Chile, It would be good to buy European fighters for the Peruvian Air Force. Greetings from Lima Perú

@@reservafederal5525 Peru will not buy Typhoon. Rather it is highly unlikely. Its too expensive. Its far morelikely that Peru would buy F-16V Block 70/72, Mig-35, or JF-17. You know the typhoon is actually quite aerodynamically unstable. This is what makes it so agile, it can reach a very high angle of attack allowing it to turn extremely well.
@Akm727 жыл бұрын
Typhoon is not really a high-alpha turner like thrust-vectoring aircraft or the F/A-18. What the highly-unstable canard-delta planform does for Eurofighter is to reduce drag during a turn which allows very good sustained turn performance at high speeds when combined with the high thrust/weight ratio. By way of comparison the F-16 was designed to sustain 9Gs while carrying a couple of Sidewinders and half internal fuel at ~30,000 ft. Typhoon can sustain a _climbing_ 9G turn while carrying _8_ AMRAAM and ASRAAM missiles.
@Akm727 жыл бұрын
The point I was trying to make is that there are different types of combat manoeuvrability. Thrust vectoring allows you to turn the nose very quickly at a significant cost in speed. Eurofighter is designed for energy manoeuvrability; to sustain speed and altitude while turning at high subsonic up to supersonic speeds. Given the way Eurofighter is designed to fight it is more useful to be able to sustain a 3 to 5G turn at Mach 1.5 to 1.8 and 50,000 ft than it is to make a hard 9G turn at Mach 0.8 and 30,000 ft (which it can also do if required).
@Akm727 жыл бұрын
Generally those post-Vietnam 1970s designs like the US F-16 and F/A-18 and the Russian MiG-29 and Su-27 were designed for subsonic manoeuvrability. They often had inferior supersonic sustained turn rates than earlier fighters. For example, anecdotally, the MiG-23 actually had better supersonic agility with it's wings swung back than the MiG-29. The MiG-29 could probably pull more Gs but would rapidly lose energy while the MiG-23 was able to sustain supersonic speed while pulling a few Gs in a turn. That's the downside of lift improvement devices like big LERXes; they generate a huge amount of extra lift and let you pull higher angles of attack, but they also generate a lot of drag during a turn. So it is fairly unlikely (IMO of course) that a big LERX design like the SU-35 can match the Eurofighter for sustained turn rate while supersonic. Subsonic it is a different story and Eurofighter pilots are probably trained to avoid that sort of fight like the plague.

The Aerodynamic Modification Kit (AMK) improves EF low speed agility by a considerable amount. It is still fairly new though so may not be integrated in many fielded aircraft, if any.

RAF named it Typhoon, in honour of the original Fighter/bomber the Hawker Typhoon of WW2 or as the Troops (allied) used to affectionately call it ''The Tiffy' The original WW2 typhoon, the 'Tiffy' was indeed an exceptional Tank killer being fitted with cannon and Rockets! One of the few things that German tiger tank crews feared was the typhoon and many a German tank came to grief as a result of the actions of this phenomenal aircraft i.e. The 'original' Typhoon! There is a good video here on you tube about this brilliant British fighter/Bomber, that never got the recognition it deserved! This naming the EuroFighter Typhoon after it's WW2 forefather isn't exclusive to the Typhoon! The American A10 'Thunderbolt' is called 'Thunderbolt' after the WW2 Thunderbolt! The F35 or Lightening 2 is named after the P38 or Lightning not to mention the British legendary English Electric Lightning of cold war vintage! The 'Modern' Eurofighter Typhoon, together with the Dassault Rafale, is a true Fighter/Bomber but it is said that the Typhoon is a better fighter and the Rafale a better ground attack, perhaps 'better' is the wrong word, what is meant is that the one version is 'weighted more for the one role and vice versa! Incidentally one of the early suggestions, had the UK's new carriers been built as true flat tops with 'cats and traps plus angled decks, was for a 'navalised' version of the Typhoon just as the french did with the Rafale. It is sad that the UK's carriers were not built with Catapults and an angled flight deck (both are British inventions) It was also suggested... (and still could happen, cash allowing....Hmm that means it wont!) ... that the Euro Fighter Typhoon's engine be fitted with thrust Vectoring and not just in the one plane vector, (180 degree) as the F22, but a complete 360 degree vectoring exhaust! as in the Russian Sukhoi 30 has together with it's canards! In fact a Eurojet EJ200 engine was fitted with a 'bolt on' vectoring exhaust to prove the viability of such a modification and it was successful, however this was on a 'statically' mounted engine , not on an actual aircraft!
@Nghilifa6 жыл бұрын
The original Typhoon was a great aircraft, but the effectiveness of Aircraft attacking German tanks are heavily overstated. More German tank crews died as a result of bailing out of the tank, and thus being killed by strafing, bomb/rocket fragments etc, more so than a direct hit from a rocket or bomb. Fighter Bombers were great at destroying bridges etc, which greatly limited where the tanks could go, as not all bridges could support the weight of a Panzer IV, V, Tiger. Go check The_Chieftain´s channel for more info. He´s a former tank commander in the US Army, and is involved in the development of the game "world of tanks" kzbin.info/www/bejne/mH_NoZJqn75rprs

Christopher Crosby: Fun fact: The British actually wanted to call the plane "Spitfire II" or "Spitfire 2000". But our German military - known to be completely lacking any sense of humor - was not *particularily* keen to that name :) Hence they settled for Typhoon. The thrust-vectoring successor/upgrade to the Ej200 is already running for years, however none of the users have yet requested the upgrade. Me too thinks, it is going to be cancelled due to lack of funding. Which is a very sad story, given it's heritage - thrust vectoring was originally invented in Germany by MBB in the 70s and implemented in the USA with the X-31, the only X-plane so far, which has been constructed in the USA with a foreign nation. I really want the British to be part of the successor of the Typhoon, despite Brexit. They have been instrumental in pushing the Eurofighter project to reality and designed most of the concepts leading to its astonishing maneuverability.

Canards look great on fighters. Does anyone have an answer why most European aircraft go the canard-delta wing layout and the Americans go for the more traditional stabilizer?
@hihahupu7 жыл бұрын
The canard is considered to be bad for stealth. Actually the canards are not for dogfighting as Matsimus said. They are great for maneuverability during supersonic flight and thus for evading missiles in BVLOS combat. I recommend going to see one of these in an air show. The sound is awesome :)

That makes sense but how come the Chinese new stealth fighter the J-20 opted for canards?
@shi017 жыл бұрын
Well, You have to consider the extremely far aft center of gravity of modern fighter planes which leads to an inherent problem with the classic design to put the elevators at the back of the aircraft. Basically the abilitiy to pitch is determined to a high degree by the force the elevators create and the distance between the elevators and the center of gravity. Simply said, it works by the law of the lever. Now if you keep the elevators at the back and shift the center of gravity more and more to the back, you need a bigger and bigger force to achieve the same "reaction". The bigger force can only come from a bigger elevator and you can actually see this in the design of the F22 and F35. The elevators are huge. The other solution is of course to put the elevators to the front, which gives you a much longer distance to the center of gravity of the plane. Now because of this long lever you need very little force which enables you to design the elevators very small which gives you a considerable aerodynamical advantage. The canard-delta combination is very efficient solution when it comes to drag. Also the canards can help to create vortices over the main wing which will increase lift significantly under certain conditions, something you do in the classic design with wing strakes or chimes.
@hihahupu7 жыл бұрын
The J20 like all fighters is a compromise between conflicting needs. J20 is mostly aimed at downing AWACS aircraft and not to operate deep in enemy territory like the F22. So the J20 does not have to be stealthy from all angles an the canard is probably a good compromise between maneuverability and still adequate for forward sector stealth. This website has a fairly good analysis of the J20, but know that the site is mainly aimed at dissing F35 so the analysis can be biased when ever something is compared to F35. www.ausairpower.net/APA-J-XX-Prototype.html

Seconds. and secondly, the limits of g forces the jet pilots can endure (the computers override certain jet commands to limit g forces and prevent flight instability aka Fly by wire).

The Typhoon doesn't actually have Cannards, but instead these are called Foreplanes. The difference between these is how they control the aircraft - Foreplanes only control the aircraft in pitch, whilst Cannards control the aircraft in pitch and roll. While the Typhoon is a beautiful aircraft and one of the best 4th gen fighters out there, what lets it down is that it doesn't have a AESA radar yet. I'm also really surprised to hear that the British air force doesn't use the cannon at all. Matsimus buddy, I'm sorry but the F-35 is a monster of a aircraft. Not only has it exceeded every expactations, it is proving to me a lot more capable than everyone thought. Stealth isn't a joke like some ignorant civilians would like to believe. My older brother has been flying the F-15E for several yrs now and has seen what the F-35 is capable of doing and it's not going to be very fun for any 4th gen fighter. As for single engine vs 2 engines, that is no longer and issue because the main reason why fighters needed 2 engines was because of reliability. Modern jets engines, like the one in the F-35 are EXTEMELY reliable and it is the most powerful jet engine ever put in a fighter. So there is no need for a second engine. But as far as the F-35, it is proving to be well worth the money because that aircraft is going to be in service for a very long time and it's unlikely that countries like Russia or China are going to be able to field anything that is capable of matching it for a several decades. It gives pilots the much more SA and the ability to penetrate high threat areas with advanced anti air systems. Something 4th gen aircraft can't do or at least not as well.

Tranche 3a standard plus CAPTOR-E and AMK is a good version of this aircraft. EF has had potential but it has taken too long to realize that potential and push out the better capability versions. Logistics support has also been poor.
@harri98856 жыл бұрын
As capable as the EuroFighter is technically, in my humble opinion her best strengths lie between the seat and the stick. The RAF and Luftwaffe pilots who fly the EF have exceptional training, second to none.
@eddgrs91935 жыл бұрын
I don't know about the RAF, but the Luftwaffe is severely underfunded. They barely have any flying Typhoons. Lat year, the Lutwaffe only had 4 operational Typhoons. The best pilots are American, just because of the sheer amount of training hours they have. No one can match the crazy amount the US military is spending. I have trained along side the US Army in Hohenfels Germany, you'd be amazed how much they spend on every little exercise. They send Apaches and Blackhawks for every QRF call, even on platoon lever exercises, it's crazy.

An awesome fighter, better than most, but not as effectively versatile. It is also more expensive, more so than a F-35. Shame to hear about the job cuts. A video on the widely used LAV III would be interesting. Thanks, Matsimus.
@1IbramGaunt7 жыл бұрын
LPMBB1815 you kidding me? You could buy two of these for every one of those! Don't get me wrong the F35's a superb aircraft but we should've just converted some of our existing Typhoons for the new carriers that we do, after all also already have, rather than spending billions upon billions on planes we won't have in numbers for three years at least
@1IbramGaunt7 жыл бұрын
LPMBB1815 also 'effectively versatile' is simply not what the designers had in mind, it's an air superiority fighter, pure and simple and a damn good one, somewhere between an F15 and F22 in capability and meant to be used the same way- might not be stealth or very good at tankbusting but it'll outmanoeuvre and kill just about anything in the sky
@4evaavfc7 жыл бұрын
Hello, 1IbramGaunt. The unit cost for the next block of F35A models is (USD) 80m or 90m for the F35B. A Typhoon costs (USD) 95m and has a 33% shorter lifespan and greater maintenance costs over its life span. I agree the long waiting time is frustrating and inefficient. It would have been great to have had a British design flying from the new carriers, but there is apparently a lot of UK industry involved in the JSF program. Economy of scale is working against the Typhoon now and in favour of the JSF. It'll be interesting to see how Typhoon's upgrades go and how it goes against British F-35s. breakingdefense.com/2016/05/f-35-wins-denmark-competition-trounces-super-hornet-eurofighter/
@manicmute94406 жыл бұрын
The F-35 will cost the UK £9.1 billion for 48. The Typhoon will end up costing around £22.9 billion for 160. So that's about £190 million per F-35 (the cost will go down as more planes are bought) and about £143 million per Typhoon. So the Typhoon is cheaper per plane, but of course it's not that simple as part of the Typhoon is built and has been developed within the UK. So the Typhoon is putting money back into the economy. The F-35 also does this but to a far smaller extent. Also, the F-35 has higher maintenance costs, that's just a consequence of it being a stealth plane. And that link doesn't support anything you've said, it just shows that the Danish government is attempting to justify buying the F-35.

I've seen a couple of those during low fly-over demonstration in Latvia a few years ago. No idea if those were British or Italian, as both nations had Typhoons stationed on Baltic air policing at the time. Beautiful birds.

One funny detail that is often forgotten is that the Rafale is an offshoot of the Eurofighter programme; The French navy especially (please correct me if I remember wrong) grew restless and needed a cheaper and lighter version for the Charles de Gaulle carrier. Originally Dassault was one of the EFA partners but then broke free to make Rafale.

@jellysquiddles31947 жыл бұрын
We don't know whether the designers already tried that or not. They obviously went for maximum mobility which at the same time means most efficient air-intake. So my guess is that it's carrying capability is due to the intakes position. As M states, that isn't a stealth fighter, but a dog fighter.

It would be nice to hear about the s400 Vs patriot. Personally I feel the s400 could be a more superior system as it has a near in protection add on. At the moment I feel Russian equipment offers better value for money.
@dumdumbinks2747 жыл бұрын
I personally think the S-400 can be said to be specialised for long range air defence even compared to the Patriot. Patriot PAC 3 batteries hold more missiles, so a single system could possibly be better overall, but the S-400 definitely beats it at long range, and in Russian doctrine is guarded by SHORAD anyway.

Interesting fact (that I did not know about): Maintenance cost is about 25% of the total lifecycle cost for the Typhoon, but 50% for the Tornado. I wonder what the figures are for MIG 29, SU 27, F15, F18, F35, JAS 39 Gripen, Rafale, etc.

I love the look of this aircraft, and believed it to be a good way to reduce cost while expanding the base of expertise across European cutting edge engineering and software development with only perhaps a small toll to be paid in the sharing of information with countries that were hardly likely to become our enemies. Unfortunatrly for the UK we allways have to be aware of the cost of a new weapons platform and as a result can't allways opt for the very best option available. Perhaps in the future we may be seen to take a leaf out of the USSR handbook when it comes to weapon manufacture which is build them as cheap as possible but rugged and long lived while paying less attention to finish and making the length of flight maintenance as long as possible unlike the obscenely short flight life of USA jets before massive maintenance and refit is needed.

That said I've always regarded both the Typhoon and the Rafael as absolutely gorgeous fighters. It'd be interesting to compare sustained turn rates in typical dog fighting configurations.

_"...the inspiration of the design for the Euro Fighter"_ Rafale didn't exist when the planform for Eurofighter was selected. Eurofighter was inspired by the late 1950s delta-winged aircraft which had excellent supersonic performance but had to sacrifice landing performance and sustained turn rates at subsonic speeds. The designers realised that they could combine a highly unstable delta-wing design with canards and fly-by-wire with modern high thrust engines and lightweight materials to gain all the benefits of a pure-delta wing with none of the downsides. So it's a design that allows them to both have their cake AND eat it.

Is this the very expensive one that keeps crashing and killing its pilots while never being used in actual combat operations ?
@Logarithm9067 жыл бұрын
Nope. You're probably mixing up the F-22 and the F-35, one spent months choking its pilots to death and has a hilariously expensive unit cost (as well as a fear of the international date line) and the other will be operational "Soon(tm)" and has been really expensive to develop (but will likely be cheaper in the long run). Basically if the manufacturer name starts with "Lock" and ends with "heed" you're gonna get messed about by them, but they will make something good at the end of it. Of course you could also be mixing up any number of the Sukhoi or Mig variants that got developed and never manufactured (all of the iconic airshow crashes are from Suks and Migs). But no, the Eurofighter isn't massively expensive, hasn't found especially creative ways of killing its pilots and is in service and bombing stuff for several air forces (i believe at least).
