Great video! It just so happens I also have an HO gauge model of a phase 2 F40 (the same you were using in this video). It's a shame that most of the F40s aren't around for more startup passenger services, since many EMDs (especially in freight service) have been running longer than the F40s and are showing no signs of slowing down, as several freight railroads and even Amtrak themselves are taking EMDs (GP38s) over modern gensets and rebuilt switchers.

The closest F40PHs I know are the Tri-Rail F40PHs, which were once supposedly "retired", but ended up coming back from the dead, freshly rebuilt. I'm also looking to seeing Caltrain's F40s one final time soon, and while there, I can see ACE's few remaining F40s again. And I also own an HO Scale Model of Amtrak 375 (which in real life later became Metra 216).

I don't know how you could characterize F40PHs as 'falling from grace.' They gave Amtrak decades of dependable service and VIA still runs them to this day. Nothing lasts forever.

If you go to Chicago depending on the commuter line you’re railfanning there is a 100% chance you will see some sort of F40PH

Great video. Made me think of having my eardrums blasted off by an MBTA CR screamer at Back Bay on family trips to Boston on the commuter rail!

Who thinks it's good that Metra still operates the foamy F40PH with foamy horns like the P5.

If a couple SDP40Fs were converted to HEP, it might have addressed the derailment issue. One possible cause was the placement of big water tanks for the steam generators possibly water surging and sloshing affected the units stability. Instead many SDP40FS were traded to EMD and components used to build F40s. Retired F40s from Amtrak can be found in Labrador, Arizona, Panama, Tennessee, excursion lines and freight lines. CSX has at least a couple for its office car fleet.

The F40PH never fell from grace, they were used until they wore out completely. The ones still in service will pretty much remain in service until it's no longer economical to keep fixing them. Metras will be around until the heat death of the universe and MBTA just spent a ton of money refurbing their F40 fleet a few years ago.

6:39, ACE doesn’t have to buy chargers yet, and thankfully for a while as the ACE forward movement which will probably start in 2026-2027. Amtraks cabbages in the San Joaquin’s will be sold to another part on Amtrak without ventures.

Metra’s F40s are slowly retiring, as they’ve all been taken off the Milwaukee District lines. Hopefully, some of their F40s will be preserved at the IRM or somewhere else.
