I saw this movie in 1961 when it was shown in theaters in the U.S. I was amazed at how they used animation combined with film to create an amazing supernatural effect. It puts modern day computer animation to shame.

I wonder where that theater was. My only two viewings of this were on TV, from one of the independent stations in NYC around 1963-65. I believe it was WOR (owned by General Tire Corp. through its RKO subsidiary), channel 9, one of three stations not part of the Big Three. Those stations were greatly missed upon moving to Miami in 1966, with only the Big Three represented plus a struggling PBS station. I missed a showing in college at the Univ. of Florida Student Union theater, which brought in an amazing array of films. Someone who had seen it tried to describe its combination of live action plus animation with scenes that looked like illustrations from 19th periodicals. When Jules Verne was eventually mentioned, I understood exactly which film she had seen. It reappeared on cable sometime in the 1980s, but cannot recall which channel. My VCR failed to record it all due to a power outage. Now, it can be seen on a massive 65-inch "Smart TV," but my amazement on first viewing it at age 11 will not be quite the same.

To muselo zabrať celé týždne,kým to všetko pracne nakreslili tie piesty a ozubené kolesá,aby sa to takto geniálne presne točilo a hýbalo.

!! S československými herci.

Later as a kid of 12 years I'd try to re-create the submarine's keyboard "engine sounds" on Dad's home organ and tape them on cassette. 'Had one other friend who was crazy like that at the time.

Wikipedia explains: Invention for Destruction (Czech: Vynález zkázy) is a 1958 Czechoslovak black-and-white science fiction adventure film, directed by Karel Zeman, produced by Zdeněk Novák, and starring Lubor Tokoš, Arnošt Navrátil, and Miloslav Holub. Based on several works by Jules Verne, primarily his 1896 novel Facing the Flag (with which the film shares its Czech title), the film evokes the original illustrations for Verne's works by combining live actors with various forms of animation. The film was distributed in North America by Warner Bros. Pictures in 1961 and was dubbed into English and retitled The Fabulous World of Jules Verne.

I'm almost certain that filming it in black and while was an artistic choice. It mimics engravings of the late 19th century.
@stephengorin2685 Жыл бұрын
Please, NO COLORIZATION! Sorry about rant mode, however, I feel strongly about this. If the director wanted the film in color, it would be. In my opinion, colorization is just blasphemy, and it adds nothing to the film. In fact, the lack of color stabilization is very distracting and annoying.
