Saw this 1973 Ronnie Lane set up At UCSB outdoors in the Santa Barbara Springtime sunshine. Henry Gross then Dave Mason And then Rod Stewart & the Faces. Un real dance party with thousands of California babes in the sun...

I saw Faces twice. The first time; Feb of '71 and again on May 12, 1973-just 3 weeks before this show. I greatly miss Mac and Ronnie. What a band.

I'm envious. I was 13 when Stewart left the Faces to start his solo career. Never got to see the Small Faces or the Faces. Sort of missed the rock and roll version of Rod.

The Faces and Rod Stewart were perennial favorites from 1970 until around this time. I think I saw some ideation of them four times (twice a year). They (with other musicians) toured with Rod as a solo artist and also as the Faces. A short lived but astonishing band. When you know the full names of all the band members, you know you like them a lot.

These guys had FUN when they played live. I didn't get to see them but I have no doubt that a Faces show is one to remember. Look at the pieces; Rod, Woody, Ronnie Lane, Kenny Jones and Ian. My God, what a lineup. I want to point out Ronnie. His tone and his playing is very much like Woody's bass on Beck-Ola. Just in your face with hair on the gain. Their music is timeless. Along with Badfinger, The Faces are one of my all time favorite bands from Great Britain.

We were lucky enough to get balcony front row seats for this one after many Faces gigs in the middle of the crowd rushing the stage. It was odd waking up the next morning without being black and blue! The best live band of my lifetime and the Edmonton series of gigs had them at the top of their game ❤

Late to the party, but just ran across this concert. One of the greatest bands ever. So much talent in all members. Back when Ronnie Wood actually played guitar. He seems to have lost his imagination with the stones. There is definitely not the same dynamics amongst the boys as in the past. It's still pure unadulterated rock and roll. Man they were great.

If you look up stones live stones stuff from the stones first tour with Woody in 75 he's just as good and brings his faces inventiveness and I feel like he still showed glimpses of it until about 78 but I think after the first tour he was reigned in for some reason. A real shame as ronnie was a tremendous player at his peak and he's become so underrated over time

Rod The Mod at his best. Before he got dragged into the parody of "Atlantic Crossing", he had it all - style, humour and a magnificent voice. The Faces were rough and ready, and utterly brilliant. They were the ultimate lads' band with soul. The version of "Angel" is the best tribute to Jimi imaginable. Sam Cooke didn't die in a seedy motel in 1964, he just changed his name to Rod Stewart..... Anybody who saw this gig in 1973 knew they were in the presence of greatness.

Think Rod had crossed the Rubicon by this time. Most of the songs are his solo songs and the Faces music ignored. This will have been the time when Ronnie Lane was getting disillusioned
@jgwire

yeah, it shows. ronnie has lost his strut for the most part and rod is the STAR of the show. Had to ff a minute to see the other band. And the keyboarded NEVER looks happy, imo, but he sure looked happier a few year earlier.

Funny how knowing now what comes a year later, you can see here Rod Stewart taking over the limelight. I don't blame him for wanting to do more of his stuff and I don't blame Ronnie Lane for seeing the signs and leaving the band, like the Beatles they were moving on, realizing they had different aspirations. The Faces playing their own music at the top of their game were so tight. The albums don't reflect the stage energy shown in the live clips here, but are good solid works of art.

Unfortunately Ronnie Lane had left the band by then, replaced by Tetsu, which was a real pity I loved Ronnie's playing. Yes, Rod was stellar compared to what he later became. But gone completely is the whole Faces camraderie. I don't see Woody, Mac, and especially Lane smile once during the show. Too many ballads. @@PatriotSteve Wow Steve, it is obvious that Lane was on his last legs in the band. But I didn't know that it was his last show. Everyone knows that he was the soul of the Faces. Had he already hooked up with his gypsy woman at the time? Yeah, it s too bad that Rod turned this great band into his backing band. At the time his solo career was still really of high calibre.
