I remember in elementary school first learning about the civil war, and they were talking ab confederate generals like Robert E. Lee, and I go “oh yeah, the bad guys” because obviously I was like anyone fighting for slavery was bad, like simple 10 year old logic. And my teacher had the audacity, to explain to me that the confederate soldiers weren’t “bad” just fighting a different side. And I was like “but their side fights for slavery?” And she goes “well it’s wasnt just about slavery” and I was sitting there, wide-eyed, blinking at her the entire time like bitch idc if it wasn’t just ab slavery, they fought for it: so they’re bad, case and point. But I obviously didn’t say that and was just like okay, cause I was 10 and my teacher was the worst. But idk this made me think of that.

New subscriber here! On the topic of judging historical figures based on past standards and not today's standards, I agree with your point that slavery is exempt. HOWEVER, even that weren't the case, we would still be justified in taking down monuments to these people because the existence of these statues communicates that the society continues to glorify them in the present by today's standards. I will give it to the re-enactor he wasn't fully wrong. The Confederacy allowed people to pay to be excused from fighting, so very often rich slave owners who started the war would avoid conscription and force poorer whites to fight in their place. So very technically, a lot of the people fighting for the Confederacy weren't slave owners and didn't necessarily have a vested interest in slavery they were just too poor to avoid fighting, but the war was started by slave owners for their "right" to have slaves. I don't remember who but I think someone called it "a poor man's fight but a rich man's war."

True, however that is a bit of an extreme example. Of course, everyone knows who Hitler was because it's WWII - a very impactful and incredibly recent historical event that literally impacted the whole world. WWII is very marketable - you've got so many movies made about WWII and Hitler as a historical figure. Even legitimate historians are aware of the marketability and keep releasing new and new studies regarding Hitler. Now, I am not American. I don't know of every confederate slaver, general, official there was, and likely I never will. So how about instead of tearing down a statue MAKE IT AN EDUCATIONAL POST - put a big ass plaque there that would briefly describe the person's life and crimes. That way one would not have to destroy a relic of the past, but instead use it as a place of learning. Well that's my European perspective.
@dokessezeaka51593 жыл бұрын
@@Xshathra006 so basically tearing down the statue and putting an educational plaque? Yh that works. But the statues should be torn. Many people know of hitter BUT they don't know who his generals were just like many people know if the civil war in America but not the name of all the soldiers. Would that still justify Germany erecting and keeping status of the generals?
@sebastianvargas76143 жыл бұрын
The United States has plenty in its history to be ashamed of, but one thing we can actually have some pride in, which these people can cling to if they want to focus on history and remembrance so much, is that there were people in this country who were prepared to die in some battlefield for the morally righteous cause of ending something as abhorrent as slavery. If they want to remember the Civil War through monuments, make monuments honoring all those that fought the horrors of slavery. Build monuments for runaway slaves and the Underground Railroad, for Union officers and soldiers. This way we can still keep the past alive while commemorating what is actually commendable in it. And if they have a problem with that, it's because it was never about "remembering history" in the first place...

I feel like if these people really wanted to use these statues to teach history, they could build actual museums around them that teach the harsh truth. You know how in europe old concentration camps are open to visit? But they don‘t glorify anything. They teach you the horrible things that happened there and you leave with a deep desire to never let anything like that happen again. If the people in your video don‘t agree to use the statues in this way they clearly just want to glorify them.

It's also so disheartening living here in the South because the AMOUNT of plantations that are open for weddings and events and NOT for observation or to learn and reflect on the suffering that went on there makes it so clear that the only type of "history" they want is the one that glorifies and doesn't educate at all. :(

So ready for the discussion on medical racism. As someone who works in public health it's so disheartening to see the disparities between races, from how medical personnel treat non-white patients, to differences in health literacy that impede non-white patients from being able to fully advocate for themselves (an issue that partly arises from medical professionals not even attempting to understand and take into account a person's background and culture and how that informs their health beliefs), and the emphasis placed on studying and trying to cure diseases that affect predominantly white people and showing much less concern for curing diseases that disproportionately affect black people. It's even more disheartening to see how many people don't take the issues seriously.

That virginia senator saying we shouldn’t blame Lee for that “one thing” like he just accidentally slipped and fell into slave ownership 🙄 no, that was something he actively chose, and continued to choose every day he woke up, and chose over again when he literally led as a general in a war over it also, as someone who studied storytelling through art: anyone who says “it reminds us what *not* to do” has no idea what they’re talking about. Art is never objective, and certainly not these statues. They portray these men as noble, heroic, powerful men that demand respect, based on so many elements of the pieces. Common ways they do this: their stoic, stern expressions show calm intelligence, the height of the platform makes them loom over the viewer as if demanding your attention as a leader. The creators of these statues did NOT intend for these to be “reminders of what not to do,” they were made to honor these pieces of garbage 😡

I think this was such an interesting point that I should have touched on more! There are almost NO other instances here in America where we have statues/monuments for people who were traitors or enemy combatants or people who killed a massive number of American soldiers. So putting up these statues when, for the most part, only "good" people get statues creates an unconscious positive bias towards the people being depicted in the statues, especially for younger children!

(I am not American nor do I live in America ) a thing my white, American history teacher once said was : ‘Americans have too many rights, it makes us think we’re all that and a bag of chips. Maybe the government should just take a few to knock us down a few pegs’ and I have never cackled so hard in my life

I think it’s so funny that they have so many problems with people wanting to get rid of these statues, but they had no problem destroying and stealing ancient African statues across the continent- and still find excuses for it today

What timing! I had a "slavery was bad but..." conversation today! My mom said that slavery was bad, but she believes black people need to admit that it was their own people that sold them into slavery in the first place. Like.......... I tried to get her to tell me why it mattered, but she couldn't. I was dumbfounded..

I mean, I’m okay with having statues preserved in a museum/memorial. We have Holocaust museums that are tastefully done and don’t in any way celebrate the oppressing party. Having never been to one, I don’t know if they’re adorned with statues of Nazi soldiers. My point is, if they were genuinely concerned about erasing the history of their culture and this country, petition for a federal museum of the horrors of slavery and racism to be erected. But then, they would never...

As a non-American Latina woman who is a History major, I would like to ask what is your (as in Ada, her subscribers and Americans in general) on removing the monuments and building a Civil War museum for them. Think of Holocaust Museums. They're not about glorifying Holocaust, they're about telling History. A museum about the history of the war would not glorify it, it would tell its story. It would have several areas dedicated to showing what life was like for people people being held captive. A reconstruction of one of the ships they were transported in (we have one of these in Brazil, it's telling the story of all the horror enslaved people went through). Areas dedicated to the art and culture developed by enslaved people in America. Areas showing reconstructions. Mannequins in uniforms. Old guns hung on the walls. Paintings. And then a room with these statues. In Brazil we have a Black History Museum, which is different than the one suggested above, but also a great idea.

The people who proudly say their ancestors owned slaves?? Like did you also look up the names of the people they owned??? I don't get it.
@AdaOnDemand3 жыл бұрын
See that's something I was going to say like 💀 that would be an incredibly heavy burden for me to bear, to know that an ancestor of mine enslaved and hurt others. I also like to believe I would go out of my way to learn their victims' names and try to make amends in some way, not insist that my ancestor be memorialized because they were a part of "history". 💀

White history?? Why does this remind me of people saying white culture? Like white people don't have culture. English people have culture, Germans have culture, Spaniards have culture, Bulgarians have culture. So how can white people have history? I mean I will admit most white people in the US have lost their original culture and history but that is usually their ancestors fault. Like I am German and don't know anything about German culture and the most I know about German history is what's taught in school...so like white history? That phrase confuses me.

You can honor your white ancestors and judge them for what they did while doing so, but once you give them a statue you are pretty much saying that their legacy, their actions and their beliefs are valid. You can reminisce you're past while still judging it, but once you excuse their actions and put you're judgements behind; You are just as bad as them.

As a white person who was born and raised in the south I couldn’t care less if the monuments are taken down or destroyed. My family actually did fight in the civil war for the south but it was for an evil cause. 🙄 Where I’m from there’s a statue of a general where the KKK used to hold meetings and rallies and that shit needs to be taken down. 💩 #blacklivesmatter 🖤🖤🖤
@fkhara3 жыл бұрын
I don’t really understand this argument of these statues being being erected to preserve history . There are institutions that have been created for that very purpose. Museums, Libraries and Archives have actively been collecting and preserving items of historical significants for decades. You can even go and visit them and look at these items for yourself 🙄

They don't have statues of Nazis in Germany. Most of those statues were put up during the 60s. If you want to learn history go to a museum.
@PirateLotusBoutique3 жыл бұрын
The state I was born and raised in became a state during the Civil War. I feel like the only thing getting rid of anything related to what we don't like doesn't help us learn from our past 🤦♀️ It doesn't take away from our history, it doesn't change our history, etc. We cannot change our histories, let them keep the history. Instead, why not work towards our future and learn from our history? Personally, I had the WORST history teachers, like literally the worst. I am more a hands-on learner (like doing projects, going to museums, looking at statues, and reading the information on the plaques, etc), not a shove your nose in a book learner. All we did was read, it didn't teach me anything. Side note: research our family history, my cousin found out that one of our great great I forget how far back now, grandfather was black. You cannot tell that by looking at me though and because of all the issues involving race/skin color/religion, I am terrified to even embrace my family heritage because I am "too white" and WILL be judged if I do. We did find out that on the legal paper for his land he owned it says he was white but his brother (and photos that we're found) they were black. It had something to do with blacks weren't allowed to legally own land at the time and had to lie on legal documents, I don't know it's still a bit confusing for me. I also have Native American in my blood on 2 different sides of my family and wish I knew which tribes but my dad's mom won't tell us(heck she won't even tell my dad who his real dad is 🤦♀️) and my other grandma passed away in 2010 and no one in the family seems to "remember" what her mom was, all I know is she was full Native American. I just want to know my family history, learn from it, teach my son where his ancestors came from and be able to embrace every part that's in me, be that Native American, Irish, black, and whatever else I might be, without being judged based on my skin tone. I don't judge others on their skin tone/race/sexuality/religion etc and wish others wouldn't judge people on these things either. At the end of the day, we are all human beings with a past and should be focusing on being better people, treating others with respect even if they don't believe the same way we do, being kind to others, not forcing others to believe how we do (example being not forcing ones religious beliefs on someone whose religion is different. Like if your a Christian don't go shoving the Bible and stuff at someone and telling them they are going to hell who is let's say Pagan and vise versa), and let people love who they love.
