The Rigid Airship (Or Zeppelin) gets a bad wrap. And for good reason, it was never actually ever good. The Hindenburg was not the outlier in a long history of booming balloons.

The Zeppelins would have been amazing if we had a way to produce Helium easier than Hydrogen. With modern weather radar and guidance systems, imagine being on a flying cruise ship that could sail literally wherever you want on Earth.

The Creep Helium is a very scarce resource that must be bottled as it leaks out of decaying rocks. There is no chemical way to make it, so finding some other gas lighter than air would be better. water vapor, methane, neon, nitrogen, and ammonia could work, but I like the idea of a neon airship the most
@BrySchec
@BrySchec 7 жыл бұрын
The Germans couldn't get helium and had to use hydrogen because before WW2, the U.S. wouldn't trade helium in case it was used against them in the state if war.
@kamielheeres8687
@kamielheeres8687 7 жыл бұрын
That's actually the point. Airships are in fact more fuel efficient than planes. It has about the same fuel efficency as water ships, but can traverse over land. It would therefore be especially useful for large sparsely populated countries like canada and russia.
@debott4538

The problem with helium is that it's a lot heavier than hydrogen. Thus less cargo capacity. Those Hydrogen Zeppelins were truly massive. I don't think a simmilar ony based on helium is possible.

Docking on Skyscrapers was considered, for example the Empire State Building to this day retains it's "mooring mast", however I don't think that would have ever worked. They tried mooring a small Zeppelin on the top twice, and both times they encountered the same problem. The building is too thin to accurately moor it and it's so high up that the wind makes it close to impossibile for the damn Zeppelin to stay still. Not to mention that a single accident would be disasterous.

Airplanes have killed a few people too. In my opinion, the agony of immolation while plunging in horror hundreds of feet to a bone shattering climax is an entirely acceptable risk if one would travel the planet in such wonderful, civilized style - and besides, since exit we inevitably must, then make it one hell of an exit. That, or face a fate worse than death - to land in New Jersey.

Even allowing for the Titanic (which isn't even the worst death toll on a ship) ships still had a better success rate than airships ever had. And the Titanic sank because it crashed into an iceberg, not because of any inherent flaws with ships in feneral.

Airships had a low success rate because they were never allowed to come into their own. WWII got in the way. Ships were far more mature as a technology than airships. And no, there aren't any inherent flaws. There are reasons the Hindenburg burned up, yes, but most deaths were caused by falling.

When we make our way to the moon and start having access to more helium (there's quite a bit on the moon), I can see airships becoming a favored mode of transport again on other worlds(not the moon obviously), materials are lightweight, fuel is efficient(we could even use electric propeller engines, which also means they could be solar powered), and they could stay in the air for a considerably long time, and land relatively easy if they need to, planes seem unsafe for places like Mars, especially with the thinner atmosphere

You shall die Airships can provide luxury as if it were a cruise liner, but in a way that’s in the air and in a quicker way as well. They provide the transportation Planes give you, but the space and luxury a Ship/ocean liner can provide as well. All you have to do is use helium, and make sure maintenance is on point. Of course improve on the technology as well. Many planes are faulty today, as well as ships. If airships become a thing again they will also of course be faulty, but this isn’t something we should fear.

Ah, Zeppelins. A story of how war fucks everyone's dreams up. And how Nazis can make you have a bad day. Let's look at the evidence. In the late 30s, there was another Hindenburg-class Zeppelin, the LZ 130, and yet another under construction. Not to mention the LZ 127, which is the most successful Zeppelin. After the Hindenburg, the US was about to give helium to the Germans to fly the LZ 130 commercially, but then the Nazis decided to be expansionist, and the US refused. Even so, another Zeppelin was being built, the LZ 131. It would've bigger than the Hindenburg. So what happened? The Nazis did. Hugo Eckener certainly didn't like them, and he was the leader of the Zeppelin construction company. In 1940, the LZ 127, LZ 130, and the under construction LZ 131 were scrapped by order of the Nazis. The Hindenburg didn't kill the Zeppelin. It was the Nazis and WWII.

But of course, with the recent technology we have, airships would be able to have a much better armour, one that could defend itself against incendiary rounds. Now, the problem with zeppelins was that when everybody knew they could fail miserably, no one but Mr. Zeppelin tried to create a better version. When planes arrived, each plane that was created was better than the last, not a copy with some minor details, like zeppelins.

Ahh, but, instead of helium, which is still rather expensive for the creation of very big airships, specifically those made for war (imagine having to refill the chamber everytime the helium escapes for some reason or another. It is not profitable), we could use thermal power, and steam power, as well, to lift the airships. You see, many modern airships, instead of helium, heat up the air inside the balloon, causing it to lift up, just like normal helium would. Now, I am very sure that this lift is not as strong as hydrogen or helium, but using steam power to heat up the air is a much more simple and economic way of creating airships, for civilian and military use.

But Cody, you neglected to mention that if the Hindenburg had helium instead of hydrogen it would into have burst into flames. And all helium filled rigid airships are 99% inflammable (they can't catch on fire). So the helium ones are safe! It's just the hydrogen ones that are exploding death machines. In-fact the new Good Year blimp is a helium filled rigid airship.

It doesn't crash every time. He focused on the early Zeppelins. Which did crash a lot, mainly because the equipment of the day was crap and the technology wasn't developed enough. But by the mid-20s, the Zeppelin had been perfected. The British and Americans tried, but their ships crashed a lot. But the German ships? The LZ 126, later named USS Los Angeles, was the most successful US airship. It was a German design. Never crashed. The LZ 127 was the most successful airship ever built. It flew around the world, made trans-Atlantic flights, and did a whole lot of cool stuff. It never crashed. The Hindenburg disaster was a fluke. Just like a bunch of airplane disasters. Hell, the LZ 130 was completed after the Hindenburg, and it would've been used commercially, had the Nazis been content with their land holdings. They were building LZ 131 (bigger than the Hindenburg), and then all the Zeppelins were scrapped for WWII. The Nazis and WWII killed the Zeppelin. Oh, and, the Hindenburg flew for a whole year, crossing the Atlantic 34 times, before the disaster. It wasn't even really designed for hydrogen... but it still did pretty good. Oh, and guess what? Most deaths, 33 out of 35, were caused by falling. The Hindenburg was the crown prince of flukes.

This also led to airships having far better range than contemporary air planes of the time. Today the fuel efficiency probably isn't that huge of a deal since we often value speed over fuel efficiency. Commercial airlines are far faster than airships could ever hope to be today. If the safety hazards were mitigated then airships could have a real use in the luxury cruise industry.

Everyone keep in mind this is on zeppelins from a long time ago, In modern time airships are something of the future, nasa has plans to use modern airships on Mars and Venus, also an airship/balloon has already to be Venus in the past, you see airships can basically be used everywhere very easily, lots of countries use airships like blimps to monitor borders, or use high altitude airships to do things that satellites do, I could go on forever about airships and how they are useful but that would take to long, in short airships are also something for the future, they offer luxury and scientific exploration and being very safe in the use of helium where if they run out of gas for engines hey just float, most major super powers like the USA are building cargo airships to travel for long periods of time and cargo lots of cargo safely faster than ships on the water (this airship for the US has already been built and is supposed to be mass produced) other countries like Russia and China also have airships and more plans to use them, airships are really good in disaster aid issues as well as they need no runway to land or drop cargo. To end it off airships can literally be used for everything from aircraft carriers in the sky to cargo airships in space quite literally, don’t forget about airships because they work (also airships have been made to launch planes making them aircraft carriers in the sky)

As much as Zeppelin Airships were awesome to look at looking back on those black and white photos, the tragedy of the Hindenburg was that it was caught on camera during the early video footage detailing the horror that happened. All the other Airship disasters before the Hindenburg happened without video footage ever capturing what happened nor didn't have the high number of deaths that the large ship Titantic had.

[Disclaimer: This comment is perhaps biased, it`s not meant to hate on the video.... actually it`s just a german on the internet upset about the fact that some of his countrys inventions were useless (we also invented the gummy bear), so clearly this video must be wrong] I wouldn`t agree 100% with the video, which may be cause i live where the Zepplin was invented and so I´m kind of biased, but also cause you have to look on some of the points in a diffrent perspective. First of, it had a horrible start. But that is something most new inventions had, if you look at the history of airplanes, there happend a lot till the first safe long flight was accomplished. The Zepplin unlike the airplane never really had the time to develop, since only one bigger company invested in it`s development , which was way more expensive thu to the scale of the Zepplins. That all, lead to the only strategy, to throw them on the market as soon as possible. Using it in war, was stupid, no question about it. But the Zepplins build after ww2 where actually pretty solid. The 2 Zepplin aircraft-carriers for the US Navy, actually only crashed thu to time presure in the building/ planning phase and there for resulting on small construction-error. And they where freaking flying aircraft-carriers, that should still be a thing!^^ The last Zeppelin left today, which is only half a Zepplin (semi-rigid) called the NT (still creative with the names) is pretty effective. After a long development process, it now flys around daily (where i live), offering tourist flights, and helping in science projects which need a vehicle that can hover longer then helicopters (it actually get used all over the world: japan, africa, north-sea, in the states and so on) And it`s still the only air vehicle, capable of flying a long time at a wide range of alltitudes, while standing still or moving, so it still has it`s small place to exist. (There where no accidents since in flight, only when not stored correctly on ground it did get damage by storms.) Love the videos, keep up the great work

It doesn't actually pale in comparison to the airplane in every single way at all. Otherwise they wouldn't still be around. Zeppelins have actually a few very good advantages over airplanes, if they're made out of helium of course screw hydrogen. 1-They use far less fuel. 2-They can easily be made electric, as they will already have a gigantic surface area and require that much horse power to move around, while the electric airplane is quite limited. 3-They failure of the early zeppelins were simply because they were filled hydrogen. As well as a lack of developed forecasting sevices And a few zeppelins did in fact survive the scrapping of 1939 (I think like 2 did.... such a sad story...) For those reasons the airship is being brought back slowly by a few companies around the world, including the original Zeppelin company in Germany who makes passenger flights. There's even an airship company in Brazil that is in process of launching it's first semi-rigid airship to the purpose of carrying massive HV Posts for installation in the Amazon and for maintenance of the already built grid.

Here are the pros of rigid airships: Quiet, can carry heavy loads, can take of vertically, are technically much simpler than airplanes (not that they're simple machines, but they don't need a million moving parts to work), can hover over an area like a helicopter, can reach heights comparable to commercial airliners, can stay in the air for days (ideal for search and rescue missions or high-altitude surveilance) and can reach speeds of over 100 km/h. That's about as fast as a truck, but those need roads, while an airship can go anywhere. So smaller airships would be perfect for supplying cut-off regions in 3rd world countries who lack roads or whos roads have been destroyed to the point of being unusable. Helicopters can be used too, but their range isn't as high and they're very expensive.

Airships can provide luxury as if it were a cruise liner, but in a way that’s in the air and in a quicker way as well. Reminder that Airships were made at a time where they could cross the Atlantic, US to Europe, in 2 days. It was much quicker than Ships,(and at that time no one could imagine a plane going at that speed or even used commercially) and thus is why people loved them so much. The fact the Hindenburg had pictures of the crash happening on site, real time, killed zeppelins. Zeppelins were still a new technology and so their reputation was vulnerable.
