Man, it's crazy just how long ago that FaZe 1 Mil tage was. The hope of joining is what inspired so many people to play and make content. The sniping community really did live and die with FaZe. It's a real shame, because the scene at it's peak was nuts and I had so much fun and made so many friends through sniping teams. There are plenty of kids the age I was then getting into Call of Duty now who will never get to experience the golden that we had back in the day.

FaZe actually represents a bigger issue in the eSports community; its quite literally only a loss to run an organization. In the last decade, the only organizations to ever be profitable in a single quarter (to my knowledge) are; Fnatic, FaZe, OpTic, Team Liquid, TSM, and 100Thieves (Im sure I missed some LoL teams). This however has almost NEVER been from performances in their circuits. Its almost always due to branding and merchandise (in the case of LoL teams i missed it would prob be a Worlds performance heavily outweighing their operational costs), with sponsors being what keeps the organizations alive on a day to day basis. Ludwig and Critikal are pretty vocal about this, but if you really want a good look at this, motorsports like F1 and NASCAR are the exact same way, with Red Bull being the only team seeing relevant profits to my knowledge, and thats again due to branding and merchandise. This wasnt as much the case during the 2000s mainly for NASCAR (Im not as familiar with the history of open wheel racing) due to the immense popularity it had in its niche. eSports needs to hit beyond mainstream attention to be profitable in any way, organizations are way to big to see money anymore. Most of the organizations that have seen profit were when they were still small, usually featuring a content team and a single esports team. EDIT: somewhat prominent Danish organization Copenhagen Flames, primarily known for their CSGO operation has filed for bankruptcy

In other words, esports needs to stay niche in order to maintain a profit because trying to break out into the "mainstream" will require you to incur massive admin/overhead/marketing costs; costs that you likely *won't* see a return on investment.

@@grgspunk pretty much. very few games have enough funding for anyone besides players to make a living. A big thing that keeps esports going is sponsors, and when your org faces controversy after controversy and spends money on terrible projects and investments, you get less sponsors. While most sports make their money through broadcasting revenue, few sports function on sponsorships. Auto Racing (F1, Indycar, NASCAR) are the prime example, with esports following in almost the exact same suit. MMA in the USA from its inception until the ESPN deal was funded by PPVs and attendance gates, but the fighters income came primarily from sponsors. Anything without hundreds of millions of dollars in prizepools, or teams lacking high paying sponsors won't see money.

It's a difficult issue for Esports because really the only way they can turn a huge profit is with exclusivity; people will have to buy subscription packages to watch. But the problem with that is they stifle their growth, and likely won't have enough viewers to sustain for very long in the first place.
