The "experts" expected the Saints to win it last year, we underperformed on offense due to holding on the ghost of Payton. Bucs exceeded expectations and won the divison due to Baker Mayfield resurrecting his career. Atlanta & Carolina are rebuilding. Both are years away from contention and have made confusing personel decisions.

Falcons fan here, I completely disagreed with not playing our starters in pre season. I don’t know how they thought that just playing week 1 for the first time together was going to go smooth. This was an issue with Gary Kubiak’s offense when he was hired as head coach when Peyton Manning was the QB. Manning never liked being under center, but also couldn’t accelerate from under center back to his drop with the proper footwork and timing. This was the first time, I saw the “pistol” being employed for that purpose, because the WestCoast Offense requires the QB to be under center for the run game to work. Going out of the pistol wasn’t as effective for the Broncos and hurt their run game. They hobbled through the season and as soon as Manning was injured, they put Brock Osweiler in at QB & back under center and the offense functioned better. They then went back to Manning for the experience he offered in their playoff run & the Osweiler honeymoon had run it’s course. The ONLY reason the Falcons wouldn’t have Kirk Cousins under center and in the Pistol, is he can’t do it very well right now with his achilles. Their run game won’t be nearly as successful with Cousins trying to run it out of the Pistol.

Great analysis! But it's even worse than that. Consider this: Kirk is playing hurt and can't even move. And yet coaching staff still considered him a better option than Penix through training camp. Granted it could be because of the money Kirk's getting, but why rush Kirk back if he's playing like this? They're better off resting him until he's actually 100%. I think it's because Penix just doesn't have it. This QB situation might have the Fail-Clowns going back to the drawing board by end of season.

As a Saints fan I think they should keep playing Cousins. But I want them to lose. If I was Atlanta I'd probably bring in Tannehill or Simean who are both available right now, sit Cousins until he's ready and then bring him back. Only they know if Penix is ready to start. I am a huge believer in not starting rookie QBs. It rarely works out well. I think Stroud was an outlier.
