I had the opposite reaction to Dan. I thought the movie worked better as a rom com than an action movie. The writing might not be great, but Ryan and Emily together were delightful. For the action scenes, I just thought the car stunts were better done in John Wick 4 and even in Fast And Furious movies. But I did appreciate the end credit behind the scene video. This movie is just okay - mainly because of the 2 leads.

Sad how stunt people are still somehow underappreciated in the industry so it was quite breath of fresh air to see a wonderful fun movie dedicated to the stunt people and the world that they live in. I still don't see why the Oscars should wait so long to add a "Best Stunt" category to their award show
@retloclive91187 ай бұрын
The same reason as always. It's a safety issue. The moment an Oscar is added for "Best Stunt," it's going to turn into a competition to see who can pull off the most dangerous stunt the best.

Stunt actors are the reason why everyone loves the movies
@zenquantum12467 ай бұрын
It’s also a question of **how** to add it to the Academy Awards. Stunt performance by its very nature is meant to be hidden from movie viewers - even in the days before CGI. Everyone is supposed to believe the stunt performers and the actors are the same person. Even if your movie has behind-the-scenes footage to share with voters, does it really represent what the stunt people did? And how do you compare that across the nominated movies?
@benzaiten9337 ай бұрын
perhaps the Oscars sill want to somehow guard the illusion of the stars actually doing all those difficult and at times dangerous stunts? if the acknowledge stunt work, they'd have to admit it's not all the actors?
@uosdwiSrdewoH7 ай бұрын
@@retloclive9118 Stunt performers are professionals. They aren't adrenaline junkies. It's not worth winning the award if they receive it posthumously. It's more likely they just don't know how to gauge what makes one stunt better than another coupled with the fact that they're probably trying to cling to the idea that stunts should be seamless and knowing it's a stunt performer will ruin the magic even though most moviegoers surely realise it's a given that actors can't do everything.

Having just seen The Fall Guy in Australia I'm thankful for this review to clarify what I was thinking because from the start something felt a little off and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. At one point I thought it was kind of heightened reality where things were supposed to feel a bit off just to the point where you realise you're watching a movie in a way. It didn't make much sense to me either when I thought it. I almost wish they'd found a way to show the stunts in the movie being done within the main movie instead of just in the credits. I don't know how that would've worked. Slight spoilers ahead. There were a lot of odd moments throughout this movie to the point I'm kind of amazed I liked it as much as I did. It did pull me out of the movie when they did the fire stunt over and over and I haven't been on a film set. They have already mentioned that the movie needs to go off without a hitch as well as the fact that they can't afford certain things so Blunt's director seems even more wasteful of both time and resources. Given how precious Sydney is about the Harbour Bridge it was amazing to see they did that for real. Though the editing was curious. I think it ultimately worked but I felt a bit cheated when the cross cutting that was clearly started in real time ended up not being so. The whole thing with Tom Ryder was very convoluted and it also meant Aaron Taylor Johnson needed to be off screen for way too much time because I needed more of him. Not sure I'll head back to the cinema but I do really want to see it again and hopefully it's home release comes with an extensive behind the scenes look at the incredible stunts.

I saw this Wednesday night at the early access screening in Imax back to back with Boy Kills World and had a blast. This film knows exactly what it is and doesn't try to do anything more. I had the polar opposite experience, I loved the comedy and the dialogue, but felt that the action could have been more effective. Even though the stunts were mostly practical, in the movie those practical stunts seemed to disappear due to heavy CGI. That was intentional, but not to my personal taste. Another problem was the sound design. Everything was loud, without any dynamic range, which also reduced the impact of most of the action. Having said all that, I totally agree with the it`s good rating, but for totally different reasons.
@franciscopozole7 ай бұрын
Agreed. When I saw the trailers I thought. Oh okay. So these are stunts in the movie within the movie. So they have exaggerated the effects to differentiate the nested films aspect. But no. They just covered over the hard work of all the stunt team with a shiny film of visual effects. I genuinely wondered why this film about a stunt man didn't have any actual stunts until they showed them all in the credits. The mission impossible movies do the same thing. Film a stunt for real then make it look fake in post.
@bensa60167 ай бұрын
@@franciscopozole That was also my feeling. They had the cannon roll world record in the movie, but due to the camera work and the visual effects I didn`t even notice that this scene was supposed to be special until after the movie. Having said that, I find that the team behind Mission Impossible does a lot better in that regard.

I generally agree with your assessment of the movie. It was really fun, although I'd built up my expectations to be higher than what it delivered, but the great stunt work mostly made up for any bumps elsewhere along the way. The joke about meal breaks got one of the biggest laughs in the whole movie, whereas I bet it didn't even register in most places outside LA.

And for comedy to work with non comedians, we need a straight man to ground use. Everyone cannot be saying stupid lines. I wish the relationship between Emily and Ryan’s character had real substance. It didn’t feel real. I cringed every time to made him slam his BACK into that rock. He broke his fricking back lady!!!! You watched it happen and you repeatedly slammed him into a rock? Just go see the movie for yourself. It was fun, and had great stunts and Ryan Gosling was great to look at throughout the movie. My husband thought it was a tad corny, be he did enjoy it. So, I never listen to "critics," I go watch instead. Most movies that I really enjoyed got torn up by the so-called critics, and they were actually good movies. They are MOVIES, you know?? If you haven't seen, "The Gray Man," with Ryan, it's a definite MUST SEE. I'm hoping for a sequel....

I liked John Wick more in his Ferrari Testarossa scene

This was average at best. Blunt needs to pick better movies. After seeing this and Oppenheimer, I would still say her best movie is Looper.
