You've articulated exactly how I felt after seeing this movie today with my sis (and really looking forward to it). Less than halfway through we were yawning. Three fourths of the way through we looked at each other and said, how can a movie about a stuntman and with all this star power be so BORING? We left before it was over. What a colossal disappointment, especially after that opening scene.

I could not agree more with the chase scene being ruined by the intercuts with the Karaoke scene. Especially with the song choice not working at all to underline the action. Not even as a contrast factor. But for me the movie found its groove in the second half when the plot finally was the driving point. So in the end, still good 7/10. But not really more and I was expecting a blast.

I went into this movie with no expectations, and I was really taken by its fearlessness, and especially its commitment to the stunt actor profession (as the credits showed). I wasn't sure for the first hour if it was good or bad, but its final act really reeled it in and I walked out of the theater invigorated. I mean its hard to pin it directly to him. He's been in movies that have done well at the box office: La La Land, Blade Runner 2049, The Notebook, Remember the Titans, Crazy Stupid Love. Some of those movies did well because they were based on popular source material or had other stars in it that were box office draws. But some of those he is featured in/starring in and is part of the success of the movie.

Well I personally have to disagree with you very strongly, I liked it a lot. I certainly liked it much more than Civil War. I really liked how it was shot in particular, in that I felt, for once, that I’m seeing a movie star on the screen in Ryan Gosling, which is something that’s been lacking in many movies recently, especially in action movies where the camera doesn’t really film the stars like they’re anything special, which this film does do with Gosling. Otherwise I thought a lot of the action was fun, I liked that it was an ode to stunt people and I thought the plot was interesting enough, as I didn’t really know where it was going. Serves me right for not really knowing Hannah Waddingham. I think it’s a shame that it hasn’t been too well and I wish more people would see movies like this. Is it a masterpiece? Not really, but it was a fun Friday night at the movies.

You say "I never really believed that the movie they were making was something anybody would be interested in." But that's the thing for me -- except for a few of the movie segments from The Artist, I have never seen a movie that is focusing on making a movie that I feel anyone would be interested in. That doesn't mean the real life movie isn't good. Like Singing in the Rain. When they get to the Broadway Melody, I'm wondering what the heck The Dancing Cavilier is about. What does Broadway Melody have to do with anything? But, a movie doesn't always need to be, well, an awards contender. Sometimes, I just want to go to a movie and have fun. I'm still looking forward to this movie.
@Ryan_t12906 ай бұрын
What a great point about The Dancing Cavalier, always looked like a pretty lame movie, but that was never the point of the film. Same with The Fall Guy, it's used as a device throughout.
@historylover6 ай бұрын
@@Ryan_t1290 I agree, which is why it never has bothered me when a fictional movie that is being made in a movie that I'm watching doesn't strike my fancy. That's not the point of the real movie. You don't want to be watching a fictional movie going "I'd rather be watching this movie within a movie!" Except for The Majestic. And I like The Majestic. But that fictional movie with Bruce Campbell is completely up my alley. Singing in the Rain is one of the greatest movies ever made, even if its fictional movie looks stupid. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing The Fall Guy on Sunday.

Totally disagree, I think on all your points. Gosling is great here, not ok, his chemistry with Blunt was working due to both of their's charisma. I never felt like they're in love but they play great off each other comedically so their duo still works. The stunts are very good and highlight the stunt profession very well. My two small problems are: the movie is a bit too long (which movie isn't nowadays?) and they should have used much less CG enhancements. If it looked more like a Jackie Chan movie, more gritty, more real, that would make it a classic. Still the stunts were practical and the movie was A LOT of fun.

Brian thank you for your honest review… because this is exactly how I felt about The Fall Guy trailer. I loved the premise of the film shining a light on stunt work which I think is severely overlooked & under-appreciated in Hollywood especially by the Academy. But as much as I love Ryan Gosling & Emily’s Blunt’s work… the trailer left a lot to be desired for me. It just felt like a typical generic action flick. I didn’t get a sense of their chemistry either. And I found it to look very fake & CGI. I’m sure it is heaps of fun but that’s not enough for me to run to the cinema & pay in this economy to see it. I can wait until it comes out on Apple store to rent someday. I will say though the promotion for the film was great. Stunts on the red carpet was brilliant marketing!

The problem was the script. Let's be real. The script was juvenile and undeveloped. It shocks me that a film can get made without a script that makes any sense. What a tremendous waste of resources and talent! Shocking really. Agree directing and editing was poor. One thing that made me laugh was the 80s sound effect for the stunts. I think more of that would have been fun. More 80s car explosion homage to funny stunts of the original. I liked the dog the best and French commands were the only funny thing and even that was badly edited. I found your review to be spot on.

This movie also had 2 of my favorite scenes in the movies so far this year: 01 - The trippy video game-esque fight scene Ryan Gosling does 02 - Emily Blunt's Against All Odds karaoke scene juxtaposed with the action scenes. Very Marvel/DC inspired like the ending credits scene. Now I'm curious to see Brian review the Tilda Swinton movie Problemista with a small role from Greta Lee and see if that's up his alley.
