Aside from winning to earn crowns, every season there are Marathon challenges that can get you a decent amount of shards/full crowns but the marathon challenges don't reset til the entire end of the season. But after you reach tier 100 in the Battle Pass you can earn *a couple* crown shards from your daily and weekly challenges

The rate of crowns in the game is about 1-5 per hour, or around 2-10 per hour when there is a 2x crown event. Some can get a bit quicker than that, but the average Gold Knight (3,000+ crowns) is about 1,500-2,500 hours. Personally at 2,200 crowns after 1,200 hours.
