@Phobos123
@Phobos123 Жыл бұрын
@@egieskes769 So, since Karelin was dominating, Americans specifically lobbied a rule, that after a draw, both wrestler should take a grip around each other and try to score a point, first who breaks a grip, awards 1 point to his adversary (in this case Gardner). Rule was specifically created only for this Olympics, for a dead cow Gardner and too fat to be held close. Plus, after 20+ years, it's pretty hard to adjust + rule was announced too late. After this Olympics, this rule got pulled off.

Perhaps the most BS match I've seen in my entire life (no exaggeration). Karelin was given 2 prior matches that same day, and Gardner got none. Even disregarding this, they gave Gardner a point for nothing more than Karelin changing his grip. Perhaps the most senseless rule in sports history - they had literally made this rule up a few hours prior to this match. After the match, they changed the rule back. While you can argue Karelin was unable to perform his signature lift on Gardner, Gardner was also unable to do anything to Karelin either. And P.S - I'm American, I'm just stating reality like it is. Gardner did not deserve a win at all here.

You called it "The Fall", the fall of what? He never fell. For one they changed the rules to give others the chance and then they reversed that rule . After several broken ribs, 13 years of dominance, 3 olympic gold and the last in 2000, a silver. He was defeated once and you call the "The fall"?

People try to give Gardner a hard time, since his weight and positioning was a major strategy against karelins signiture lift. But here's the thing. Yea, karelin made a mistake that cost him a point, but Karelin wasnt able to score 1 single point against Gardner the entire match. No doubt Gardner was extremely talented to keep this monster at bay for so long, securing the victory. I also wonder what would have happened if karelin didnt reposition his hands/grip. He obviously did it because he sensed the position he was in was becoming disadvantageous. Perhaps he would have be taken down.

True, and Gardner was successful at the judges not getting a single penalty point due to passivity (that he deserved, anyway) I think that was the game, and not the wrestling.

Funny, nobody comments on what happened to his power... Maybe an injury, but when I saw him raising himself by bracing his hand to his knee, it was obvious that he was 50% at best. Whatever, he is a great champion .

Karelin made a mistake at first round trying too much to lift this heavyweightdude and losing strenght. Perhaps olympic comittee also wanted somebody else to win gold by making Karelin to compete two maches before finals.

Wrestling has always had a problem with playing it safe being the best tactic, this is a shame of a fight, the rules at the time were just dumb. 3 passitivities by the american and he wins ? I'm glad it got changed, none of this guys tried any technique for 9 minutes, they are 130kg so it's rather normal but its just a shame.
