This was literally just the battle of Stalingrad except the defenders lost. It had everything: ‘hugging’ the enemy, brutal urban fighting, heavily outnumbered and isolated defenders, even supposedly-empty fuel drums near the command post exploding and turning it into an inferno (although IRL, Chuikov survived that particular incident).

Last ditch defense against overwhelming odds is common. History called the Japanese soldiers fanatics during the battle of Okinawa but had Japan actually beat the USA in ww2, they would be considered national heroes. Stellaris doesn't really do moral grey area unfortunately so TTI will have to do with simple Us vs Them setups. Maybe if the Khans are beaten, absorbed and transformed into valued part of the confederacy, this story will conclude on an interesting note. Some fictional warrior races are perfectly fine with integrating into a stronger power when beaten instead of opting for partisan resistance like typical human response but I don't recall vanilla Stellaris has that cultural option.

Captured by the Horde, I was brought before the Khan himself. "Do you know why I kept you alive?" "No" I replied. "You are the Last Antaran alive on this planet," He paused. "And you still fought to the end" He grabbed my face by the jaw and pulled me close to meet his gaze. "Who are you and where did they make you?" "I am Corporal Cassel Al-Fayed of Embasora. Alpha Group, 2nd Cadre, Light Tiger Brigade, Antares Pioneer Corps."

I love how the Khan is portrayed here. The final scenes portrays him as real leader with significant charisma and an ability to recognize and win over defeated foes. All to often in contemporary fiction the "bad guy" is a comically evil mustache twirling villain. Kudos to Templin for giving us a foe we can respect.

I’ve long held the theory that humans are the most powerful species in Star Trek because of their sheer adaptability. They can be logical when decisions need to be made, but they have emotions that keep them in touch with their conscience. They are a relatively peaceful species, but if you back one into a corner lord save your soul because they will not.

"What? Say again." said James as he tunes the receiver until he got a clear single. "Rayous is... Repeat,...s dead." The weight of the message took a moment to hit James. Slumping into his command chair. "After so many battles, after so many close calls they finally got her." Wiping the cold sweat from his face. "Only one thing left." Opening the hatch to his command tank he leveraged himself out. Once it was a mining tunnel but now it grew into a shanty town for the resistance. He walked through the mess of tents and dirty faces. Some looked haunted, others wept openly and many more wore rage. they must know the news. He passed Nicole, a young girl scout who picked up the rifle after the aliens stormed the hospital she volunteered at. Then came Naomi a merchants wife who's connections got them the arms and resources they needed. Law keeper Hector who lead refugees through the tunnels to safety. Yuri a street thief whos knowledge let them out maneuver and out fight the aliens. A many many more, solder, civilian, high, low, law keeper and criminal all made equal by the loss of their world. All left directionless by the death of their leader. Stepping onto a crate he looked what remained of the 1077 armed. A few but enough for what he had in mind. "Me... My sons and daughters of the 1077. We are tired, our minds are exhausted and our arms grow weak. But, here we stand the last children of Yost. I am proud of all of you. Everyone here has stepped above and beyond. All we could ever wish for is to spend our lives the best we can and these past months we spent it doing the impossible time and time again. You know the enemy, you know what they will do and you know they will find us. We can die squatting in a cave, we can die running or we can die with our heads held high. I know where I will die. I will die in Discovery plaza. Burning the memory of Yost into their skulls. So, when they tell the tail of the children of Yost they will speak OF THE NAMES OF EVERY MAN, WOMAN AND CHILD AS ROYALTY!"

This city shall be a mighty fortress, its defences legendary. Any enemy seeking to take it will break before it. And even as it is overrun they will have to pay in blood for every city block, every building, every road and every single brick! Those who stand to defend it shall become the finest warriors of their age. They will go down in history. Friend and foe alike shall remember their names. Those who choose to oppose them shall cower in fear when they hear their weapons, their footsteps, their battlecries! And even if the city is lost, these brave men and women shall know no fear for in their final stand they will fight their enemies to the bitter end, with their bare hands if they need to. There will be no mercy and no respite for anyone who seeks to defeat them! This city will be defended by heroes until there is no one left to defend it. Yes, we had lost the battle on Melaka, but in the Great Khan's eyes, we were victors in their war of honor. My grandfather was among the 99, he had secured passage for my grandmother and their young child when he received orders from Confederate command to marshall. I watch the vid every year to remember the loss felt, but also the gain that Antares found in that moment; I am glad I have yet experienced such hardship to this day, but I fear we do not have the strength in our blood like our ancestors did." ~Professor Jornoz; Melaka Memorial dedication ceremony @ Antares High Command (50th anniversary)

Melaka shall be immortalized in the Antares history books, both as the site of a desperate and valiant last stand, and as the site of the turning of the tide in the Confederate-Khanate War. Our Stalingrad. Our Cadia. GLORIA MELAKA! FORWARD ANTARES!! Also I can just imagine the reaction at the very first battle at the open of the war: Confederate Admiral: Whew! That was close. Let's put in for repairs. Grizzled crewman: No sir. That was just the first wave.....look. *The crewman's screen lights up with hostile contacts, and the admiral looks out the viewport of his flagship to behold a second Khanate armada bearing down on the ravaged defenders.* God help us....all ships! The Fall of Melaka shares much with the Fall of Singapore in ww2. Beyond the shared etymology; both are major trading hubs with a great deal of cross cultural interaction. Each of their falls were among the ferocious battles in history with the defenders making a valiant but fruitless last stand.

I see your comparison but Singapore in WW2 was only a shock because they believed the Japanese inferior. Also no one surrendered and Reyes died in this story. Compare that to Bennet fleeing and 130.000 surrenders including 40.000 Indians joining the Japanese. It's not reminiscient of Singapore at all other than the naming and/or it being a hub for trade.

Except that the fall of Singapore was a pathetic fart. It was a city held by a failing empire that hadn't fortified it properly and the armies defending it were led by an incompetent general. Melaka was a lot closer to Stalingrad, complete with a grain elevator.

@@Perkelenaattori ; Stalingrad was a tide changer and a major military-industrial city, and the defenders won. Neither is true for Melaka. Only a battle on one of the Antares Core Worlds would fit Stalingard. If you want battles that would be similar to Singapore and more fitting than Stalingrad, I would say the first battles of Kiev, Minsk, Sevastopol, and Manilla would all fit.

Static filled the air as Bolivar awoke in his tank, his crewmates were all dead and the hatch above him torn open. He climbed out and fell onto the rubble covered street, he quickly stood up and drew his pistol. The sounds of gunfire in the distance directed his navigation and he began walking toward the sound. He rounded a corner and saw six Bantherian soldiers patrolling the street. He called out to them "Over here you bastards!" Before raising his pistol and pulling the trigger dropping two of the Bantherians immediately. The Bantherians roared in anger as they returned fire on the lone Antarian soldier. A shot pierced through Bolivar's shoulder and sent him falling to the ground while screaming in pain. The Bantherians closed in and stood over the wounded man. "Bold but foolish" one of them said as they knelt down and leveled a blade to Bolivar's throat. "I ain't done yet" Bolivar said as he pressed the primer of his thermite grenade before being enveloped in a warm light and heat followed by a roar of an explosion.

Against the Portugese fleet of massive sail ships with multiple decks of hundreds of cannons, the navy of Melaka sailed out in canoes, armed with bows and keris (traditional Malay knives), armoured in nothing more than traditional costume.
