At the very least, the House is pretty divided on what the future of the Confederacy should be: it's kind of split between Pacifist, Militarist, and Xenophile, which might be interesting in the future when it comes time to deal with Earth.

The world-building, creative design, concept art and backstory to the Antares Confederacy is so good I honestly hope this gets picked up by a streaming service and made into a tv series. I'm getting some Battlestar Galactica vibes, Expanse vibes, even bit of Lucasian Star Wars in there. Yet it's still very much its own original and unique thing and I'm loving all these videos!

Question: why does a majority Muslim-Buddhist nation with minimal Western influence use Latin mottos? How does the lore make that work?
@NeonSm1le
@NeonSm1le 3 жыл бұрын
The use of Latin might be the closest analogue to a unifying heritage they can find as none of the major cultures in the Earhart flotilla have a common Empire ancestry, the exception is in fact the Muslims, not just through the ancient Caliphates but also in fact through the Roman Empire which many modern Muslim nations like Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia were once a part of. And the choice of going with a dead language like Latin instead of say a commonly used one like Arabic might be a compromise to avoid favouritism and pissing off the large groups of African heritage which would be majority Christian, and the Buddhist East Asians. The only other possible dead language I could think of to use for uniting symbolism is Sanskrit from India, But Indians weren't a large contingent of the Earhart flotilla, and Sanskrit's links to Hinduism might offend the many Muslims in the Antares.
@alekssavic1154
@alekssavic1154 3 жыл бұрын
Someone in the original leadership must have been a fan of Roman history, so probably came up with that one reference and it just stuck and became a theme over time. I think some reference from India may make more sense thematically (it is where Buddhism and Islam overlap irl), but it's not like people from other parts of the world can't be European history nerds.

When The Templin Institute announced that they are making a season two and the contestants, I wanted the United Terran Protectorates or the Holy Solar Empire to win. Because I felt like the other contestants were to much like the G.T.U. or like most western style Sci Fi media. And when I saw that the Antares Confederacy won the polls I was a little sad but thanks to this video I have become to admire it for being more unique than its western counter parts. to that end I thank The Templin Institute for making this world building unique, different, and interesting. I cannot wait to see how the Antares Confederacy's "Hero's Journey" will take place and how it will change at the end of season two.

Honestly I thought the relationship between religions and the confederacy attempt to remember, and maintain what knowledge of the home is borderline genius. The first citizens of Antares I my mind at least would have very few history books, much less a library of historical documentaries and first hand accounts, and all the things you would need to not only remember their home but understand it too. But what books they did have where religious books. Books belongs to individual colonist who now had in their hands the most complete and most reliable sores of history of earth. I would make sense a nation of scared and desperate and lost people's would cling on to any memory of home.

"I [recruit name] do solemnly swear my allegiance to the Antares Confederation and willing submission to the will of those lawfully placed above me." (The influence of the Muslims informs the wording of the last half of the line. Out of respect for the beliefs of their other colonists, all references to particular gods or God were not included into the oath.) "Upon my honor and the honor of my House, the entire Confederation is now my Tribe. I enter now into a vast fellowship and all who march under the flag of Antares are my brethren." (Family honor is a big thing in many constituent components of the Confederation. The wording of "Tribe" is both invocative of the African heritage of the Confederacy and to avoid any mention of "Republic" or "Nation".) "I shall forsake all personal glory, wealth and comfort. My honor shall be that of the Confederacy; the defense of Her people and the upholding of Her values." (The Buddhist influence in rejecting the temptation of the material world) "In honor of the Expedition, I shall brave the unknown. In memory of the Lost Colonies I shall endeavor. To live up to the example of the Pioneers, I shall display dauntless courage even in the face of death." (Touchstones to the shared events in the founding of the Antares Confederacy) "May this oath bind me until I join our ancestors in the stars."

You guys should make a tv, comic, or movie series of this! You guys have a huge fan base and merch, if you make something like a prequel comic when the settlers first appeared to the foundation of the Confederacy. With that you could get a bigger fan base and more money from the comics. The next phase could be an animated series on the state of the confederacy detailing minor to major events! You guys have more diversity and creativity to your government than any other series, it does not follow any trope you find in most sci-fi series!

I find that there might be a lot more lore to be explored with respect ot religion in the Anteres Confederacy. Considering it is a confederacy and yet its dominant religions are Islam and Buddism, that does not leave a huge amount of historical precendent in the real world beyond some South East Asian countries and some regions of India. The impression I get is that the Confederacy is mostly secular, which, again, is historically rare in the real world for a mostly Islamic nation. Considering that in both regions, the history of relations between the two religious groups has been strained, to put it mildly, it would be interesting to explore the extent to which religion influences politics in the confederacy and subsequently now these two major releigious groups have come to (at least mostly) coexist. I imagine issues like womens rights (including participation in the military and in government), freedom of expression and various economic aspects like the sale of alcohol or the functioning of the financial market would all be very different if religion played a more prominent role in the Confederacy so I think it would be cool to explore how religion ther become more liberal and less strict, something which has few real-world precedents with respect to Islam. Perhaps Turkey post-WW1 after the fall of the Ottoman Empire might serve as an interesting case-study, as the country basically turned from a multicultural, but ultimately Islamist, nation into a secular democracy that happened to be majority Islam almost overnight once Attaturk started enacting reforms as the country's first President. I would be happy to discuss this with others who might have more ideas or even knowledge of the relationship between relgion and politics in what seems to be a mostly secular representative democracy!

I would rather live in Antares over the GTU a thousand times out of a thousand. But I think you told a more coherent story about the GTU. On reflection, this is probably because the GTU's narrow scope of motivation makes them easy to understand, where the more political nature of Antares requires more work showing the attitudes within it and why it ends up doing what it does. In other words, this might just be a symptom of telling the story more or less as it develops, without going back to edit foreshadowing into earlier scenes. And given that... yeah, y'all did a pretty good job.

One criticism I would have is that you set up the Confederacy to have been born out of settlers from both Africa and Asia yet not one single name in the entire series sounded African, everyone of them was either from South Asia or the Islamic world. Whilst I realise Mohammed, or Salah al-Din could technically be North or East Africans, it still doesn't convey a sense of West, Central, and Southern Africa like Abara, Abebe, or Abimbola (the three most popular surnames in Africa) would. That then suggests that those from Africa became marginalised, never entering the higher echelons of society, which was a mistake, within the context of the blueprint you set yourself.

Something else. The thing I liked the most about this was the backstory for the Screk. It would have been easy for them to be another cliched alien puppet master but they actually turned out to be every bit as much a victim as Earth did, and it was a nice touch not wiping them out as you would normally see, but having them follow their own redemption arc and regaining their honour. I wish more sci fi writers would take the time to add a little nuance to their stories.

Yes if you want an example of hopelessly incompetent multi-state entity EU is the best example no matter the age, galaxy or dimension. And yeah you definitely succeeded. The AC not being western democracy is a bit of a received characteristic (I'd argue, in a bit of a dickish way, that changing most common name from John to Achmed might be start but not a finish line- it might be for some peopel for forme both are foreign names and the political system itself is very much westernized) but I get that making it anything more would not only require a ton of work but getting it into series would be... a bit overwhelming. And yes it is refreshing change, can't wait for further development.

marc i love the idea of antares but all the small nations that make up the confederacy aren't really interative many people like to associate themselves with specific nation can you make more interactions between a fan and the nations its just besides fan art fans of a nation cant show really affect the nation at all

You Should Have made a Purple Flag. It Is Way Less Popular Than Green. Why? Because In Ancient Times And Even Medieval,Renaissance Times It Was Quite Expansive. One Of The First Flags Since The Roman Empire With Purple Was The Second Spanish Republic Flag, And Nowadays There Are No Nations With Purple On Their Flag. So It Would Have Been Cool If The Antares Confederancy Had Purple On It's Flag Instead Of Green or Literally Any Republic.

Purple has connotations with aristocracy and imperialism due to the rarity of the colour in history. The colour simply doesnt fit in this context. A nice fit for purple in a nation that just isn't an Imperial Authoritarian State is the Commonwealth of Nations.
