MoFi took a hit, and deservedly so. I would think their future releases will be bought, but not in great numbers unless MoFi reduces prices across the board. Original pressings will become more popular, as many actually sound better than their “upgrades.”
@nothingimportant45042 жыл бұрын
They’re still being bought, but at a much slower rate. Items that would’ve sold out an hour after they announced a restock last year, are still available. Very possible that they perhaps were able to press ample copies to keep it in stock; more likely people are less inclined to buy them based on the revelation this past spring.
@FleagleSangria2 жыл бұрын
Mofi collectors arent going to stop purchasing these. And certainly not due to 4xDSD transfering that no one can hear. Originals have always been prefered to Mofi by many folks. Its not all the sudden going to be different. People will buy Mofi. People wil buy originals. No different in the long run. What is different is the economy.
@danielwilliams19212 жыл бұрын
@@FleagleSangria We agree: I didn’t say collectors would quit buying. I did say prices need to fall, which is traditionally what happens when you loose marketshare (especially your own). And if that’s what you mean when you say it’s the economy that is different, we agree again. But if you’re speaking of the economy writ large, I doubt if the collectors and regular buyers are materially altering their buying patterns. @Andy-rc9db Жыл бұрын
@@Darrin.Crawford I’m not sure that anyone these days claims to be able to ‘hear’ digital. The days of weird artifacting are long gone. As to whether the DSD copy degrades the fidelity more than a OneStep cut directly from the master (which, lest we forget, is what they were claiming) - that is impossible for mere mortals to know as we do not, cannot, and will not get access to the only referent that matters (namely the master tape). As such, I wouldn’t presume to argue one way or the other. From a personal perspective, my annoyance is that they were charging a premium under the pretense that they were AAA - a format which is finite, complex to deal with, and requires access unavailable to some competitors… All of which drives cost. My issue is that I’ve been overcharged on the basis of a lie which, however you cut it, is the very definition of consumer fraud. I don’t care whether a record is AAA or digi-sourced. I listen to both. I do care when I am being charged $125 a pop. I’m funny like that :)

I very recently came across a MoFI 1978 issue of Year Of The Cat. It's a brilliant, absolutely classic album in every respect. I wish I could scan and attach here an open letter to the buyer. Back in 1978 the letter was probably disposable. Now in 2022, it is a bombshell that changes everything about the Mofi Controversy. The letter states that the technology of the late '70s was in flux, and that MoFi audio engineers intended to move into the new arena of digital recording and mastering techniques. I only wish I could attach that letter as a file here.

Interesting analysis, Melinda. It's important to note though that the Discogs data reflect prices between dealers and collectors and have nothing to do with the amount of money MoFi get for selling new records to the first customer. I guess we'll never know if MoFi themselves have been adversely affected by the controversy with lower sales. Personally, I don't regard my records as having any value - I buy them to listen to, not as an investment, although I appreciate that many collectors like to know how much their collection is nominally worth. As always Melinda, it is a treat to watch and listen to you - I always enjoy your discussions; mostly I just sit here agreeing with you!

What the MoFi thing taught us is that "all analog" was something silly to say or believe in. What really always mattered was a great recording, engineering, and mastering, not the source media. Yet it is so hard for some to give up old habits. What I think has really changed is that people are spending there money elsewhere (ones who have it) and others who don't have it are not spending. This morning, I canceled my UHQR order for Steely Dan Aja and Gaucho. I dislike listening to 45 RPMs and the pressings I have are good enough. Plus, the UME remasters of the Steely Dan catalogue are decent for $30 (I have Can't By A Thrill and it sounds really good). For me, I just want a good remaster/reissue at 33. Thanks again!

Back in the day (I am 68) I was a collector of quality vinyl recordings. Specifically Sheffield Labs Direct-to-Disc recordings. Here, no recording tape was ever involved, instead the live performance was recorded directly and lathe cut into lacquer coated aluminum discs.. They were recorded live in 15-20 minute takes so no mistakes in the musical performance or by the recording engineer could be tolerated. Only a limited number of copies of these cut masters could be produced so the discs were expensive and limited. Sheffield Labs dealt mainly in audiophile Jazz and Classical recordings. I still have these albums even though I have not had a turntable in my system for 20 years. The convenience and hassle free mobility of digital slowly gained hold on me from my first CD player which I bought while living in Japan in 1984, later MD players and finally the lossless digital streaming of today. I have always maintained that the two most important pieces of audio equipment in your system are the transducers. Those pieces in your system that convert electrical current into vibrations and visa versa. These are the phono cartridges and the speakers. One converts the stylus vibrations into electrical current, and the other takes that electrical current and converts it into vibrations in the air. The electric path between these two transducers (your Amp, preamp) really does not make a huge difference in sound quality if they are of good quality and functioning up to par. You can't usually hear a difference between good amps and preamps, you can hear differences between different cartridges and speakers. SO... What I miss most about my "vinyl days" was the smell of the discs, the large format artwork on the album jackets, the ritual of cleaning, handling and storing of your prized albums and the beauty of a fine, heavy turntable. I went thru many turntables, until I found the Denon DP-55. Servo controlled, Absolutely gorgeous. Produced in the early 80s.

Your turntable does sound wonderful. I like the Denon brand. I will have to keep my eye out for that record label. It must be rare because I never see it. If you compare the "last sold" numbers you gave most are HALF what they sold for in July. The Discogs averages go back years so any quick drop won't be reflected. The logic is that MOFI records drop in price, it doesn't bother me that they copy vinyl from a compact disc, because I already suspected that they were that and I said it for years and nobody believed me until now. But since logic does not work in the physical purchase of music, or it does not exist, I would not be surprised if they continue with quite high prices and that there are still people who pay them, you know that "audiophile status" trend.

Hi Melinda, thanks for taking your time and doing this research. From the start, I always had the Mazzy take, it’s the music, I like the records, and I’m keeping mine and still buying the ones I want. MoFi had a fallout due to poor PR, not poor product. I think it might still be too early to judge, let’s see in five years, if the ones purging their collections won’t be regretting it. Like many other things, people tend to react to group decisions, go with the crowd and not make well thought decisions. As someone who have deeply researched and published on hearing, I guarantee that one can tell differences in sound but not the source. They’re just reacting to the news : “I told you, I knew better”. No, they didn’t. Anyway, I do agree with your take as always. It’s the songs, what makes us happy. Pressings don’t matter that much. Playing. A record is such an artisanal and emotional experience, so many variables, records being just one. Yes, I loved Thriller and the Bob Marley UHQR, I bet you’ll love them too. Lastly, keep the great vibe, lovely videos. And happy thanksgiving to you and your family

I don't mind paying these kinda prices for 1st edition pressings... but not for re-issues made from copies of 30 year old master tapes regardless the copies being digital or analogue. When those 1st issues were stamped... the master tapes were brand spanking new. Re-issues almost never sound as good and i see no reason (other than artificially creating scarcity by limiting the numbers) why the price is as high as it is. Re-issues (even by Mo-Fi) should be no more than $30. And personally, that's all i'm willing to pay for a re-issue. So let the price come back down to earth, where they belong.

Melinda, just as in many auction situations prices can be all over the map and not consistent. If you continue to watch specific record prices, you will continue to see them go all over the map. It all depends on how many want something and are looking for certain records. plus it depends on how badly they want it. Using DSD and other digital files in place of original analog tape masters has been around for quite awhile. Mofi just misrepresented it. If you've seen any of the Giles Marting interviews, you should have heard him state that he has never had his hands on and original Beatles master tape. He has only seen them once on the shelves in the EMI vault. The recent anniversary stereo remix of the Beatles "Revolver" is a totally digitally sourced mix. It was also stated that this applies to "Let It Be" and I am guessing "Sgt. Pepper's..". All digital stereo mixes. The DES and DCS processes have been around for quite awhile now and there is nothing new. About the only things that have changed is people are getting better using these digital processes. I haven't yet found a Mofi product which didn't sound great. And I myself plan to continue to buy them. The mistake that Mofi made was stating that their releases were from using the original master analog tapes. They had been using digital copies instead, and they hid that fact. But, as we have found out, others have been doing the same thing. With the Michael Jackson Mofi onestep of thriller, they wouldn't have had a problem obtaining the original master tapes if Bernie Grundman had done the remastering as he has done forever with that album. If it had been remastered at Sterling, they would have been allowed to use the original master tapes. Either Sony or the Jackson family didn't want Mofi to have access to the original master tapes. I'm surprise that Mofi didn't do a 45 rpm onestep.

There are controversies regarding the MoFi pressings from the 80's that has nothing to do with a digital step, it has to do with the sources. I have the 1982 MoFi Beatles White Album. Stan Riker can no longer remember the source he used on this particular pressing for the remastered finished product; the best source would have been the original British Master Tapes. The general consensus now is that a Capital Submaster was used. But here is one thing I can say about every MoFi pressing I bought in the 80's; they were flat as a pancake. I bought a recent MoFi (sealed but 2nd party) and it has a small warp. It does not really affect play but when I spend $90, I expect a flat record. I really don't care about whether there is a digital step in the new releases if they sound superior, but I do expect perfect vinyl!

Since the Debacle, by placebo effect , all I hear is digital harshness and brightness through my aging " golden" ears...I would love to own all MOFI, if they lower the price to $20 or less a piece, then and even now....If a wizard ask me one wish, I would tell him/her to grant me that ear to distinguish between 320 mp3 and FLAC at this age.

Very good analysis Melinda, you showed a nice representative sample and the trend is really what matters! I thought the price drop would be more dramatic given all of the MoFi controversy, I do see a lot more MoFi's for sale on Steve Hoffman than there used to be, for lower prices. I agree that in context of the economy with very high inflation over the last couple of years, the actual reduction in relative value is much higher.

I’ve noticed MoFi pressings starting to appear second hand more at my local record stores, probably because of consumers being turned off by the reality of the controversy. I’ve said it before: if it sounds great to my ears, i won’t lose sleep if it’s DSD. I mean, better that than god knows what digital source is used for some of the more poor sounding reissues out there.

Hi Melinda! I’ll continue to buy mofi albums. Most of the analog masters have to be baked before playing them. This makes sense to use DSD to get a good transfer. At least mobile fidelity is running the DSD back to analog for album mastering.

Hi Melinda, thanks for this very interesting and well-researched video! Great that you followed up your July video, I was hoping you would. If anything I interpret your findings as evidence of the resilience of the MoFi brand, rather than the market ‘punishing’ MoFi for past indiscretions. The drop-off in values, though remarkably consistent across the titles you featured, was so slight that I would be inclined to attribute it to general economic conditions, maybe buyers driving a slightly harder bargain as times are tough. Another factor could be that some of the titles have recently had high-quality, high-profile reissues (What’s Going On, Revolver etc) albeit by other labels. And for the One Steps, it appears MoFi already found the price ceiling for these when they were first released. But clearly overall the demand is still present for these rare, great-sounding and desirable MoFi records. Greetings from London!
@MelindaMurphy2 жыл бұрын
I agree. The drop off in price wasn't as significant as I would have initially thought back in July. That's good news for MoFi. The bad news is that the economy in general will hurt a lot of audiophile labels. Vinyl is a luxury. Thank you and take care.

I felt so lucky to find a near mint copy of The Moody Blues' 'Seventh Sojourn'; an original Mobile Fidelity album from the 1980's. Very cheap, ($25) from a used record store, about 8 years ago. The sound quality was lackluster at best; I was not 'blown away' as expected! Sorry if I missed your opinion about the sound quality of the 1980's MF albums vs. your explanation of current values; are they a hit or miss thing soundwise? Also, I just pre-ordered a 2022 MF release of Paul Simon's 'There Goes Rhymin' Simon' one of my early '70's favorites. I have high hopes for that one! Thanks, Best to you.

I was able to get the MoFi pressing of Huey Lewis and the News' Sports for a very reasonable price (comparable to regular pressings). But I guess the seller was just unaware of how high their values tend to get. Anyway, MoFi is not the only audiophile brand that ran intro controversies. The british label Simply Vinyl is known for great sounding pressings but they never reveal their masters sources, which sounds doubtful. Plus, their albums come on PVC covers, which ruins the vinyl if exposed for too long.

MoFi, might pull through but if there is any compensation ordered from this coming court case then they'll be in trouble, it'll open the flood gates for more action/s/class action and it'll possibly fold and possibly an eventual buy-out!! I never had the money to shell out for MoFi records. However, when I was looking to add a definitive Kind of Blue, I pulled the trigger on the MoFi 2 LP 45 rpm. I'm in Canada as well, so there is the added dollar exchange rate factor. The ONLY reason I shelled out is because I thought it was sourced analog. After MoFi-gate, I felt duped and I immediately cancelled my pre-order of the upcoming Bill Withers - Still Bill. They should have been both transparent and priced accordingly...period. I'd now rather hold out like I did for a Speaker's Corner Just as I Am. There is also a lot of evidence of some really great AAA releases at much more affordable prices. I also do not have a problem with digital transfers per se (so much of the 90s output I love was recorded digitally) as long as they are done well and priced accordingly. I'm not above forgiving a misstep, but for me it was pretty egregious and they also seemingly did little to no damage control or apology...so no, you find find too many MoFi records in my collection. Just one collector's 2 cents.
@MelindaMurphy2 жыл бұрын
I completely understand. I do think they have made an effort to win back their customers. They reply to their comments more on social media as well as have contest giveaways. Interesting review - thanks Melinda! i like to collect vinyl records because I generally like and want analog. Not that I can hear a difference, it's just what I want in a record. If I'm OK with digital, especially better digital like DSD, I believe I'm better off and saving a load of money by buying a CD (SACD) for sometimes 20% (maybe less) of the cost of a MOFI or some other "high end"/DSD vinyl reproduction. I mean, why pay 3-5 times as much for something probably created by the same digital file? Furthermore, fwiw I cancelled my order for a couple Thrillers, and no longer order from MOFI, NOT because I don't listen to digital, but because of their deceptive, misleading marketing practices. I don't knowingly do business with people like that.

There are lots of reasons why prices may drop a little. I would have expected MoFi's prices to take a little bit of a hit, but it would be nice to know how other records were doing in the same timeframe. Is it just MoFi, or are other audiofile pressings going down a little as well? What about standard out of print pressings? I cancelled my MOFI One-Step preorders. I was curious about them, but I don’t have the room. I need to get another shelf this winter. I just don’t understand why they charge as much as the UHQRs. It doesn’t make sense. Chad just keep raising the bar over at Analogue Productions. He really has to go through a lot to get the master tapes and keep the chain all analog. I just got the new Bob Marley UHQR. Before that I got Steely Dan’s “Can’t Buy a Thrill” UHQR. Because of my lack of room, I’m not sure if I’ll get the other Steely Dan UHQRs. I understand your argument. I think they charge more because of the premium packaging and the time they spend mastering each record until they think it's perfect. I only have one standard MF and two one-steps in my collection of about 300 records. My records are mostly AP, Speakers Corner, BN Classics and Tone Poets etc. I have been watching the average price of my collection drop by a similar percentage that you are quoting for the Mofi's. Perhaps it's not a situation unique to Mofi, but a general trend in the vinyl market caused by some other economic or market factors. Mofi handled this whole thing so badly. If they had only come out from the start and announced something like "We recognise that we are coming to the end of an era in analog recording. The tapes are in decline and the technology of DSD digital archiving is rising, such that we have reached a point where DSD transfer and mastering is the responsible and sonically superior course" ...if they had said something like that, not everyone would have liked it but they would have at least been respected for it.

I understand what you mean. Of course The Beatles are worth the money. 🥰 We all have our priorities. 🤗 Thank you and take care.
