Richard Rohr helped me in my conversion to Catholicism. I was “spiritual but not religious.” He, and the documents of Vatican 2, allowed me in good conscience to convert. Four years later, Traditional Catholic and go to the TLM. I don’t necessarily agree anymore with Rohr but very grateful to him for his role in my conversion.

@apubakeralpuffdaddy392 Father Rohr is a Catholic Priest in good standing for many decades. He recently met with the Pope who instructed him to continue doing what he is doing. You have a story here of a man who renewed his faith in the church thanks to Father Rohr. These squabbles are really very unimportant I think in comparison to a life lived in orthopraxy

Hi Trent Horn, I attended RCIA and person in charge prescribed books by James Martin and Richard Rohr to be read and studied by attendees. The church was managed by Jesuits. So I withdraw from RCIA. I was horrified by that teachings of James and Richard Rohr to replaced the traditional teachings of Catholicism. I am reading through Catechism of Catholic Church with Father Mike Schmitz.

@@scottschultz2669 Fr. Mike is awesome. Both his Bible in a year & his catechism in a year are outstanding! I actually started discerning the Church when I read the Catechism in 2010. I came into the Church Easter 2014. There are some really good content creators here on KZbin. Just steer clear of those that malign the pope, the bishops, & Vatican II. Catholicism has its malcontents & poor teachers like any religion. Some of my faves are, of course, Trent & Catholic Answers, Pints with Aquinas, Reason & Theology, Jimmy Akin, Augustine Institute, St. Paul Center, so many riches out there… There are some pretty cool niche ones too, Apocrypha Apocalypse for the validity of the Deuterocanon, et al questions & Patristic Pillars for what the Early Church Fathers taught, are a couple of my favorites. What’s crazy is Rohr inspired me to convert to the Catholic Church! I don’t even remember why or what I read that inspired me, but I was very deep into new age spirituality and it must have attracted me in that aspect somehow. I’ve since thrown his books away, including universal Christ which I never read, along with my pendulum and tarot cards. I believe frequent reception of the sacraments helped me discern truth.

Father Richard Rohr is a great teacher , with insights for mature Christians to continue on a faith journey toward a deeper , more intimate relation ship with God and all Creation . I rejoice that my brother , Richard , has been given the wisdom and courage to speak about more of the mysteries God has offered us. I have been a life-long Protestant , and began my journey in an evangelical ( non-judgmental ! ) church . My parents always lived, and taught me to live a life of tolerance and love , and to follow the teachings of Jesus . As my journey continued , I joined the Moravian ( from the time of the Reformation ) Church. The motto is " IN ESSENTIALS , UNITY ; IN NON-ESSENTIALS ,LIBERTY ; AND IN ALL THINGS , LOVE . " There have been contemplative prayer sessions in my church . Father Richard's teachings are quite conservative , in the best sense of the word. How wonderful , what a gift of grace we've been given to learn the lessons in our history that open us to return , to learn , to be courageous , to become stillness . I wonder why the dear , blessed, revolutionary Pope chose the name Francis . I also wonder what he and our Franciscan Father Rohr spoke about ...........

I agree with Trent Horn. I think people in general are trying to make others so called happy like Oprah for instance. He gave her what she wanted to hear it just sounded to me and then sprinkled in a little bit of the truth. I think we do so much to let people feel good by our words that we don’t really tell what needs to be said and that’s a really big issue a problem. I’m reading the Bible and also reading some apologetics also and on top of that I listen to biblical teachings on my phone while at work. I’m not sharing this to boast or brag about any of that but what I am trying to do is to stay in Gods word and on top of that it’s Awesome learning it’s Fun and that’s what a lot of people get lazy about and make excuses about is not picking up the Bible because all in all if you pick it up you definitely won’t lay it down 👍🏼☀️ Godbless

My first introduction Fr. Rohr is when I got into a 12 step program. Rohr has not only written a book on 12 step spirituality but references the founders Dr. Bob and Bill W. in his other work. I believe Rohr has an appeal to people who feel alienated by religious legalism which is a lot of people in 12 step programs. In the universal Christ book he makes a lot of references to theologian Teilhard de Chardin and the Eastern fathers. Its also had some funny lines. "Did the divinty need to wait for Ethnic Orthodox, Roman Catholics, European protestants, and American evangelicals to appear before the divine love could begin? I think not!"

Words words words! Debating and arguments about the nature of God has been with us since the Apostolic times. When others don't line up with a Bible theology of our own Christian "tribe," we call them heretics. Believe me when I sought to love my brethren after reading scripture myself and arriving at similar conclusions, before I even heard of Rohr, I was on the receiving end from those who simply follow the "party line" in my case being a Protestant denomination with an Arminian leaning. Let us be honest here with the exception of Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy etc, Protestant Christianity is divided into many many ways ways of interpretations understanding of what after all is the mystery of God the originator of all things etc. But thank God for Jesus which our Bibles point to! Hallelujah! A revelation that through which we can recognise the heart and mind of a God formless who in the midst of His creation made Himself fully known in a man. Jesus began as a child in the teachings of his native Judaism, was fully enlightened (anointed) by God the unseen Father, became a Rabi and gathered his disciples and taught that the Kingdom of God was at hand ( present tense). He was crucified because he challenged mainline religious thinking of his day. No one (including myself) has a water tight theology except to honour Jesus as being given to us as the example of wholeness and integrity of flesh and the creator's Spirit. Asking for His Spirit to lead, and meditating on the written word we call the Bible it has convicted me that as St John clearly states, that the Living Word is to be realised and made real in all of us. (Galatians 1/16 the very verse that caused me to be born again as a son of God that I now call Father) By God's anointing through the Holy Spirit via the inspired writings of the Bible, it is His work to "wake us up" and to follow the WAY of Jesus to love serve and be inclusive of all creation. Please let us stop this debating nonsense and as St Paul himself said at one stage, this two millennium long ego driven wrangling over words. Let us as Christ centred men and women live out our lives as Jesus showed us. Let us "walk the talk" instead of being outwardly religious with almost no real transformation. By denying this worldly ego driven flesh of ours and choosing God/Christ's way, let us be indeed the light and salt that Jesus spoke of. IN Him as always and forever, thanks to His revelatory restorative and healing sacrifice courtesy of Jesus on the cross for us ALL. Yes ALL knees will bow to the name of Jesus if not in this life, then face to face to the LIGHT of CHRIST at the door to the new age to come. God in us ALL will judge ourselves the True the False. And yes there will be "hell" for many, as they come to realise that of having taken God's name I AM in vain and lived to and for themselves. After God's refining fire with much regret and gnashing of teeth in the crucible (fire) of truth, Jesus the Christ will reconcile ALL of creation back to the Father. Heretic or not I walk in the Spirit of FAITH (God in me) HOPE as a result and most importantly the way of LOVE being the expression of God Himself. PS The likes of Richard Rohr, Paul Young, Brian McLaren, Brad Jerzak etc attacked by the agents of dogmatic certainties, have been a blessing in helping so many not leaving the faith in Jesus and the REAL church of CHRIST. Let us not judge one another brothers and sisters, and only choose what is good (God) true (real) and beautiful (Christ's grace mercy and unrelenting love) in the eyes of others. Peace to one and ALL❤

In it he criticized Benedict XVI for calling homosexual people “inherently disordered.” The late pope said nothing of the kind; he said homosexual *acts* were inherently disordered. A big difference. If Rohr doesn’t understand the difference, he probably shouldn’t be a priest. If he knows the difference but misquoted in order to villainize the pope, he definitely should not be a priest.

Another good point from you (and to your former self). Even if a priest, he, did not write a book, or did write and the book weren't a widely popular as this, he's still an ordained Catholic priest. If my parish priest had the same 'ideology' as Fr. Rohr, I am afraid most people wouldn't recognize the subtle heresy he promoted. You are correct. Religious brothers answer to their superiors in the same way diocesan priests would answer to bishops. Unfortunately just as there are some bad bishops, there are also bad superiors. That energy of pure love and self-awareness. The second coming in my mind that makes the most sense is that we humans wake up to the Christ within us. It's the limits of our KNOWLEDGE that keeps us grounded in trying to prove our point. I study not to waken but to prove that I am right! And prove that you or Father Rohr is wrong. I always love hearing when someone espousing a wacky idea says "A Catholic priest said it, so it is authentic" and you find out that this priest is none other than Fr Richard Rohr. I guess we can put Fr Martin in that camp (but I've yet to personally meet anybody arguing that Martin's experimental ideas are actually authoritative teaching from the Church, like they do with Rohr). The cosmic Christ teaching has always been so hippie New Age, but here you show just how off it is. I would add to what you say that a lot of what Fr Rohr says echoes ideas from Neoplatonism, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. that are perhaps his attempt at trying to syncretize all religions as compatible with Christianity. But of course that is not reconciliable and he ends up losing the rail. Its also really a telling point to consider what he means by "Franciscan language." Usually this means "hippie boomer ideas that St. Francis never espoused", and can be said to "resemble" St Bonaventure's intellectual tradition but really don't follow from it or align with it after any serious examination. In reality Fr. Richard Rohr's ideas are not that distinguishable from the New Age, astrology, tarot and gem magic, neo-pagan, etc. literature of the 80s and 90s, in trying to describe some mystical reality that ignores actual reality and deceives people with a false narrative of history, just as it obscures authentic Catholic teaching by blurring everything into a mystery presentation. Its designed for readers who want to claim to have been "raised Catholic" but really have left behind the Church in favor of secular pluralism and religious syncretism. "Spiritual but not religious," "all religions are the same," "the blind men and the elephant story" all fit right into this genre. Just throw it in the trash.

No matter how a "good person" a heretic, he is still a heretic.

Love him , nothing you can say can dissuade me , the right wing doctrine of American Catholics is what drove me and my family from the church in the first place. Thank god the English Catholic community

God bless you Trent for the patience you have dealing with phony shepherds like Rohr and Martin. I so admire you.

Come on (!) Rohr is exploring the established Catholic doctrine of 'the "hypostatic union": Jesus Christ as both fully God and fully man, both perfectly Divine and perfectly human, with two complete and distinct natures at once. All Rohr is doing (which it's hard to believe you can't see), is using "Jesus" to refer to the human nature . . . and "Christ" to refer to the Divine nature. Sometimes he talks about "Jesus" . . . and sometimes about human nature in general. Sometimes he talks about "Christ" . . . and sometmes about Divine nature in general. What's so hard to keep straight here (?)

I haven’t read the book, but even in just the few clips Trent showed here this intent seemed clear to me. It’s odd how I find Trent’s discussion and debate with atheists and agnostics so inspiring and intelligent, but when I listen to him disagree with other Christian’s he completely loses me.

Exactly. I feel like Horn is feigning indignation against Rohr, for some reason I can’t fathom.

Theological Liberalism is always Gnosticism. It's almost disappointing how there aren't ever any new heresies. Thanks be to God that the official teaching of the church are so clear.

I’m glad I saw this. I know a consecrated brother who teaches “higher education”, who subscribes to this Rohr heretic. I stopped associating with him when I found there was nothing in the Rohr worldview that he didn’t recommend me to read. They’ll do anything other than learn to practice virtue. It’s somewhat understandable (but not an excuse) because the cultural message tells them loud and clear that they’re “being who they are and following their God given nature”. I’m sure that he and those like him are thrilled with Brandon and our current pope.
