I tell you what, it depends on where you're at too. I work in the trades, and every other word there is a swear-word. It's funny. The more I watch videos on religious topics or read theistic material the less I end up swearing. When I take breaks from it to do other stuff, it comes back more often.

Profane speech isn’t about certain words. The “S” word isn’t sinful in itself. If I say “I’m gonna poop/take a dump” it would be the same as saying “I’m gonna take a sh-.” It is sinful when we use these words to degrade what is good, whether it be God or man. Calling someone a piece of crap is the same as using the “s” word in that context and is sinful and wrong and awful. Using language to hurt others or God is wrong.

The taboo against “cuss” words is nothing more than an emotionally reinforced social construct, and there is nothing actually objectively immoral with uttering such words as expressions.

The Pope is a heretic. I don't understand why Catholics follow him, according to Roman catechesis and the laws of the Holy Universal Church. This Pope is a heretic and anyone who follows this Pope is anathema.

From the very beginning I never cared for Candace Owens as I thought she was a phony and an opportunist. Go all the way back to when Dave Rubin had her and Blaire White on his show to dialogue. Blaire White called out Candace's so-called conversion to being a conservative which basically happened overnight. Candace has been running a site called "social autopsy" that was designed to dox people who were supposedly being bullied. Candace Owens used to be called "Red Pill Black" when she first started as a "conservative." Candace became hostile, insulting and defensive when Blaire White called her out on this. Dave Rubin finally had to end the dialogue because Candace Owens was so defensive and belligerent. Absolute disgrace when Taylor Marshall started hanging out with Candace Owens and playing footsie with her.

I'm probably the worst of these people. I get caught up at work and swear left and right. I almost go weekly to confession for this. I don't say things like this online of course but in my day to day life. I pray to be rid of this and I'm going to double down with the grace of God to be better and to take up my cross.

I converted in my mid twenties with a couple of friends i had known since high school. About half of our little friend group converted to Catholicism within a year or two of each other, and one of my buddies who also converted had an elegant way of pointing out the same blasphemy that Indiana Jones got slapped for. He would merely follow up one of our friends saying Jesus Christ in a profane way with "our Lord and Savior." It was quick and witty, acknowledging he doesn’t appreciate the Lord's name being used in vain without making a scene. I’ve since adopted that in my own life, and it has worked wonderfully.

Jesus called the Samaritans "dogs" which seems to me like a direct slight. When he calls the temple bankers " den of vipers" this seems just but harsh. Likewise, on rare occasions the Buddha would rebuke his disciples with seemingly harsh speech
@curiouschris9819 минут бұрын
Eh, it’s contextual. At church, in polite company, in formal settings, around children? No, never. But when alone, when hanging out with your buddies in a casual setting? Sure, in moderation. I’m not saying you drop f-bombs every other word, as that shows a complete lack of class and a limited vocabulary, but to clutch your pearls over someone occasionally saying “dammit” or “shit” is ridiculous. You should never blaspheme, but the occasional swear is harmless in the proper context. I do find it funny though that while I hear Catholics rail against scrupulosity here we are deliberating over whether saying crap is a sin. It’s ridiculous. This is the mentality that breeds scruples, and I should know because I still struggle with it. Words have a time and a place, including swear words. It’s just about how and when you use them.

I was upset by the piece from Andrew that was mentioned, i was watching whatever podcast live when i saw it. Thinking of my disgust at Andrews hypocrisy while reflecting on this video makes me realize how hypocritical I've been being as well.

“Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.” This commandment not only prohibits false oaths and common swearing, but it forbids us to use the name of God in a light or careless manner, without regard to its awful significance. By the thoughtless mention of God in common conversation, by appeals to Him in trivial matters, and by the frequent and thoughtless repetition of His name, we dishonor Him. “Holy and reverend is His name.” Psalm 111:9. All should meditate upon His majesty, His purity and holiness, that the heart may be impressed with a sense of His exalted character; and His holy name should be uttered with reverence and solemnity.

The video does come off as a tone police vibe, but I suppose you do bring up good points. I do wonder what is your level of tolerance for the profane though, for instance in the Father Stu example it's really unfortunate since it's pertinent to the story - it's supposed to be a new person anyways, a conversion if you will. I do think there's a time and place for vulgarity, but it definitely should be used sparingly.

As an atheist this is a crazy video. "No, we didnt kill people JUST for translating the bible... we mostly did it cause they didnt agree with our theology." "Yeaaaaa, killing people over heresy mightve been a bit much, but you guys did it too!" "Yeaaaaa, the church mightve been harsh shutting down alternate views, but wouldnt it kinda be cool if we did it again in america?? 🥺 we can ALL agree that THOSE guys go too far"
@Blue-nm9qp27 минут бұрын
It's funny how Trent is talking about profane words and then he says freaking. What he really means is fucking. People do that all the time and think it's ok. They replace words but we all know what they mean. It's very simple. When Jesus transforms u, all that goes away completely. We are made new creatures. People who use his name in vain like saying God damn or o my God or just using his name for anything other than spiritual meaning are violating 3rd commandment
@nathaniel52613 минут бұрын

In college I have become much worse about cussing, but I’ve slowly corrected a good amount, at least to the point that I know longer say F-bombs and things of that nature. I still cuss, though, and recently realized how much scandal it causes when I said “shit” in front of some Baptist missionaries while discussing salvation, and they clearly thought using the term significantly weakened my argument. Regardless of whether they were right, I made a horrible impression on them and thus represented the faith very poorly.

Faustina on edge of blurting out blasphemies multiple times at Mass (Paragraph 77) and claims her love purer than angels (1061) Just as I was entering Divine Mercy Vortex 🌀 for a 20 year trap 🪤 I remember attending a meeting at St Lawrence in Sugar Land when Charlie was youth pastor (I think Gabi Castillo is now) Charlie cursed ‘like a sailor’ at a casual hang out meeting 📅 When I hinted at it at meeting and then emailed him my concerns, he pretty much shouted me down for ‘misunderstanding’ and made me feel bad for bringing it up Now I occasionally say a cuss word but never Our Lords Name in vain (although I did lots of mortal sin circling in DM Vortex, even eventual evil heart) but there were times I would casually cuss a lot in DM Vortex Chapel 💒 at St Lawrence is decked out in very highly questionable 🤨 No Heart ♥️ 🗡️ DM artwork and statue of Faustina Just speaking from personal experience Be careful w some private revelations (even if New Order church pushes it)

I disagree that it equates to showing pornography. Using swear words does not (of itself) rise to the level of a mortal sin, whereas pornography always does. We are often taught in childhood that swear words are the content prohibited by the 2nd commandment, and this is neither correct nor complete. It leaves poorly catechized and now lapsed Catholic adults thinking as long as you didnt swear you are clean under that commandment. Even though they may swear all the time and have no desire to go to confession ever again. But also that they badmouth the clergy and the holy articles and other things that actually do fall under that commandment in the catechism, and think that this is not actually a problem like swear words are -- which is not correct. And so they just perpetuate the incomplete/incorrect teaching and the kids learn the same thing they were taught, and setting up the same strawman situation they are likely to fail at, that if you swear you are out of the state of grace, and if you cannot stop then you are going to be in confession every Saturday until you get fed up with the Church's rules and leave off for good. What I like to teach kids is that swearing is bad because there are better words that communicate what you mean, and relying on swear words is like picking up a thin piece of garbage plastic when you what you really need is a screwdriver. Nobody wants you to fix their cabinet with street garbage. Nobody wants to hear you speak when garbage is all you have to say. Hence, use big words that will make them think you are too smart to stoop to using garbage words. But also don't feel like you are going to Hell just because you said a swear word (or a few) when someone cut you off and almost killed you on the freeway. Anyway, if we want to correct these common misunderstandings we have to teach kids properly about the 2nd commandment. And if we are teaching them not to swear we should teach them that it is about respect and using language properly, and then also teach the other 2nd Commandment things as proper to respect and use rightly. That's all I wanted to say, it's not really any point offered as contrary to your argument, just a footnote comment I wanted to add on.

This is a great topic to cover. Thank you for embarking on it. I don't swear much but this makes me want to clean up my speech even more and be more prudent when I use swear words. I have family members who behave in the way you describe. They are Catholics but they value this disordered form of "straight talk" as the way to go about discussing controversial topics. While some of these "Catholic" influencers may be correct in affirming the Church's teachings on sexuality and other issues, they do so that is like a "clanging cymbal". This also emboldens others to speak this way and that's what I've seen in some members of my family.

God is eternal. Jesus is eternal. Eternal beings don’t have moms. It’s really REALLY simple. We all have avatars or bodies we use to navigate this world, but we’re more than flesh. Catholics fail in regard to true biblical anthropology. That’s why they fail in how they think about Mary. Nowhere in the Bible is Mary called the Mother of God as a title. I’m really sorry Catholics. You can have God without the Mary heresy and apostasy. It’s called just believing God at his word. McArthur is a heretic for his Calvinism, but not for believing the Bible regarding Mary.

The born-again believer need never fear they will lose their salvation. They cannot. A true believer will never depart from the faith. The Bible is absolutely clear about that. There is no external act that is required for salvation. Water baptism is certainly important, and required of every believer. However, the New Testament does not teach that baptism is necessary for salvation. On a side note, infant baptism is not mentioned in Scripture; only Christian (born again) believer’s baptism is described in Scripture as an outward expression of one’s faith in a newness of life in Christ.
