"Dragon Tiger Tower" is one of Kaohsiung's famous landmarks. It is said that if you enter from the dragon's mouth and exit from the tiger's mouth, you will be able to avoid bad luck. The statue is Xuanwu Emperor/ Heavenly Lord Xuan Tian of the Northern Heaven/ 北極玄天上帝. This Xuanwu Emperor Statue is the tallest water statue in Southeast Asia. It is about 72 meters high and the seven-star sword is about 38.5 meters long. There are many ancient records about the origin of Xuanwu Emperor. Simply say, he is the Northern God, general of the Big Dipper, guardian of heaven, protector of warriors, minister and representative of the Jade Emperor, the divine lord of immortal exorcist, savior of calamity and redeemer of suffering. I am so happy you both went to so many places, you are really amazing travelers, thank you very much for sharing!

Awww, the overhead shot with the child and his father(?). Thank you for capturing natural footage of locals and other visitors in your videos, especially how they interacted with the environment at the temple. A place of worship is where we are most vulnerable and authentic as we send our prayers out. I loved watching the ladies as they prayed with their incense. The pace, music and editing I really enjoyed. Thank you for sharing your beautiful experience.

4:47 Channa micropeltes, giant snakehead, giant mudfish or toman harimau, is among the largest species in the family Channidae, capable of growing to 1.5 m (4.9 ft) in length and a weight of 20 kg It is native to the fresh waters of Southeast Asia (South Indian populations are now regarded as a separate species, C. diplogramma),but has also been introduced elsewhere and is considered invasive in Taiwan. Other names include xal mas (শাল মাছ) in Assamese, red snakehead, redline snakehead, and ikan toman (where ikan is fish in Malay and Indonesian).

The Dragon and Tiger Pavilions, the Spring and Autumn Pavilions, and the giant golden statue of Xuantianshangdi are all Taoist temples that heavily incorporated Buddhist imagery, including hell, the Bodhisattva, and Buddhist stories. While Taiwan isn't the only place to have these two religions merging into a folk religion, Taiwan seems to have taken that merging to the extreme. The Confucian temple is much more classic and traditional in comparison. Xiantianshangdi, which literally means the Ultimate Deity of the Black Sky, is depicted with one foot standing over a snake and another over a turtle. The snake wrapped over the turtle refers to the constellation Xuanwu, which is the Big Dipper, and Xuantianshangdi is the manifestation of Polaris and guardian of the North, which is represented by the color black. He also is like Poseidon in Chinese myths, and commands over all creatures living in water.
@IfWeGoTo Жыл бұрын
Oh, we did not realize they were Taoist, that makes sense though! It's really interesting to learn that Taiwan has a pretty extreme merge on them! Thank you for sharing a little bit about the stories, we really do not know a ton about Taoism, or even Buddhism at that!

The Confucius shrines were like Shinto shrines were built to rule over people. After the Spanish and the Dutch ruled over Taiwan, the churches were built. After Japan ruled over Taiwan, the Japanese shrines were built. After the Chinese regimes ruled over Taiwan, the Confucian and Martyrs' Shrines were built. They were all built by the governments for political purposes. However, they are all part of Taiwan's history. Most of the Taoist, buddhist, and Christian religious buildings in the past and nowadays were built by the locals who truly worshiped.

Are the night market in Taiwan Wheelchair friendly? I notice that it has many people at night market. Thanks
@IfWeGoTo10 ай бұрын
Hi! I would say many markets would be totally accessible! People are very nice in Taiwan and I would imagine people would move to make room and be helpful. If you want to avoid big crowds, I would suggest visiting on weeknights. We noticed most don’t get too crowded!
7:16 This is a Taoism temple, not Confucius. And this one is to honor Guan Yu, an ancient Chinese general during the Three Kingdoms period, who was declared a god later (that happens in Taoism). kzbin.info/www/bejne/eInIgpdmfZJ5n7c

@@IfWeGoTo Agreed . Going back a bit to the gorge , as far as I knew there was a get off and on plan for the route . Sadly the bus just went past after my first stop , left stranded near the air base . Contacted the company , sent a driver to take me to the next stop :-) The schedules are at the bus stops :-) Did not see any swallows at the grotto :-( Thought the traditional place was pricey , had coffee with a Japanese couple . Bumped into them during the religious festival in Kaohsiung :-) Nearly 6 hours long ! The harbour is a cool area too . Cool buildings as you said . I do like that you cost most items :-) I paid the same for the chicken 3 years ago . Do not travel to eat what I could at home . What did shock me was the prices in some places for 'western style food ' , a small pizza was way too expensive , from a chain store . Restaurant in Tamsui was over 600 TWD for a pizza ! I was getting a really nice crumbed pork schnitzel with noodles and a tasty broth for 60TWD 50 m away from my hotel in central Taipei . Same distance to the local temple . There is a must see one in Taipei , forgot the name . Have fountains inside and a big display outside all to music , be there at the right time . A 'naughty ' part of the city :-) Talking of which , changing of the guard at the memorial is awesome . Just so much to see there . Museums might not be your thing , there are 2 in central and the big one just outside . Then there is the zoo :-) Have a good time .

4:52 I think that fish should be a type of fish tiger(魚虎)(Channa micropeltes), belonging to an exotic species and a fierce species that will exterminate the original species of fish. This has to be mentioned in the religious release ceremony, where many people increase their luck and change bad luck, and fish vendors buy fish or other animals (snakes, birds, turtles...), which are released indiscriminately, causing ecological crisis🤦♂

Ohh thank you for sharing all of this. Yes invasive species can be super super bad.
