I thought that the saying “Sweet Fanny Adams” was gonna be a sweet saying in her memory meaning that she loved sweets and was a lovely girl, but man that’s messed up that they use it to refer to something of low value. :(

crocco doggo “Sweet Fanny Adams” was actually evolved from “Sweet F**k All”, which was cleaned up by saying “Sweet F.A.”, and later the “Fanny Adams” was drafted in to cover 5he swear without most people knowing of this case.

@AlottaBoulchit
@AlottaBoulchit 5 жыл бұрын
Given the way he wrote about her death in his diary I would venture to guess he was a sociopath. He might not have cared one way or the other about killing her and just did it cause he could. Personally I think there was probably a perverse intention in his taking her and the murder was to cover the evidence or the murder itself could have been for perverse enjoyment. Him claiming insanity or drunkenness sound like just attempts to get off the hook should either excuse actually work in his favor. I'm glad he was hung but it would have been more fitting if they'd let the father execute him via a one man firing squad...but probably for the best. The father didn't need that weight on his shoulders with everything else.

When ppl say how low crime rates used to be.. I often wonder how accurate that is. We have to take a few things into consideration. How well was crime recorded and documented and kept? How often was crime even spoken about? How easy was it to get away with something compared to the present day? I wouldn’t be surprised if the crimes rates were about the same honestly. I myself have heard a colleague use the phrase on occasion (also not with its original meaning but as an alternative to 'dear me!', or 'wtf, are you doing') and he is not yet forty. So, he might be an oddity, or the use simply depends on various factors, like social and geographical background or the like. Having said that, yes, you are right, it is not commonly used, but it shouldn't be around in the first place.

Nicky R. I totally get what you’re saying but educating people about the saying is going to get more people to learn it. If it crops up in a conversation ask if they actually know what it’s from and get them to research, they’ll shortly stop using it. I just don’t think it’s enough of a phrase to get “cancelled” so to speak when it already has done out of becoming outdated

That were an angel who loves children and saved every puppy they saw!" Like there HAS to be some people who were awful people and someone was honest about it. I've only seen one obituary in my life where people were honest and straight up said they weren't a good person 💀💀

I live in Scotland and I've heard that saying countless times. It seems to be interchangable with "sweet FA" which I always thought stood for "sweet f*** all." My parents and grandparents have used it jokingly when we ask what is for dinner, or what we are getting for christmas, both versions. I always wondered how we started using the name Fanny as an insult, a name for female genitals, and also as a term for mucking around and doing nothing (fannying about). I even used the term myself a lot as its very very common here in central Scotland. I will NEVER use it again.

This is so sad. It's a shame she died in such a horrible and gruesome way and that they are using her name for a cruel way. I can't believe how she was cut up and some parts have still not been found. But, may she rest in peace knowing that her killer didn't get away with it... It was obvious he wanted to kill her with the fact that he disposed of her in such a cruel nature, and if they hadn't locked him up in prison awaiting his trial he probably could have done it again. I honestly don't know why people kill people, or why people kill kids, or why kids kill people or why kids kill kids, it is disgusting and especially if it is in a cruel way. Like with the James Bulger case or the Baby P case.

I always try and remember murder victims not the murderers themselves like the hungerford killings Dunblane and many more. The little Victoria climbe and james bulgar little poppi and baby peter case got me the most. They was so young just babies and toddlers at the time the little Victoria was killed by someone who was supposed to love her she was 8 years old holly and jessica murders in solham April and sarah murders by pedophilies frightened me they was just kids out playing. Thats what me and my sister used to do was play out in the parks or walk to school or to the shops by ourselves in the 1990s and 2000s there was so many children being harmed and killed by their parents or loved ones. Few was killed by strangers there was has been always fear of stranger danger not to talk to strangers but its usually its parents grandparents aunts uncles and family friends people who know the children can be abusers or murderers. I wanted my brother to be in at a certain time when holly and Jessica was murdered by the school care taker i didnt want my brother going out on his own in fact i dont think he did go out unless i was with him in the garden only it made me paranoid about him coming to harm. I didnt want my brother or sister to be out of the garden

Beating your kids and having them work in factories was also okay then, but is (pretty much) universally accepted as wrong today. I'm not defending it, I'm saying that you can't decide that people were terrible then based off a set of morals that didn't exist. Never heard "Sweet Fanny Adams!" but my mum would say it to refer to either my sister or I when we were growing up, then I think later on, "Fanny Adams over here/there." Those are the contexts I've heard it used, but it makes sense now! So much sense. That poor, poor girl. Baker is lucky George Adams or the mob didn't get to him first. One of our first recorded psychopaths caught by police?

I wonder what would have happened if the mom believed her daughter and her daughter's friend in the beginning. I know that the times were different back then but I just feel like Fanny could have been saved from such a horrific death. I am definitely not blaming the mom. This stuff still happens today. Parents are so trusting with the people who are around their children and that can put them in danger. Not everyone you are close to have pure intentions and just because you wouldn't think something could happen, doesn't mean that it can't happen. I love your channel Eleanor! Keep up the great work!! Can't wait for next week! RIP Fanny.

I think because there was no tv,radio,Internet, phones,or fingerprinting etc...cases like this weren't emphasised about...not in small quiet villages .you had newspapers,but I think people were naive because of those reasons.he was the last person to be hung at Winchester and the sailors of her day gave their meat rations that horrible saying made out of her initials.if it wasn't for that,I don't think her story would be known of like it still is.that and the brutality of it.poor kid

The is a really sad one :( Jacob Wetterling was a huge abduction case from my childhood. Every person I know was impacted by this case. It was recently solved, after near 30 years. His mother has been a huge child safety advocate and is currently the chair for The National Center of Missing and Exploited Children. It would be hard for me to watch, but I would love to see how you pull all the details of the case together.

I love old cases like these! It's probably just because I'm obsessed with older eras, but I find them to be more mysterious and interesting. I'm absolutely not telling you to do more of these, but if you enjoy making videos about old cases I would def watch the hell out of them. Also, I think crime must have been worse back in that time. The only difference being that most were labeled natural or suicides and because they didn't have the technology we have today they could never say otherwise. We touched this in a Sociology class before. And that media was nothing like today, so people didn't know of crimes that took place. It always makes me think of The Lovely Bones and how she said that only pretty white girls were made known when they go missing, even though others were definitely victims. Perhaps cases like these get sensualized because it was obviously a murder, and it was pretty obvious who had done it. Doesn't hurt that she was a little girl. Maybe that's why I'm so obsessed with old cases, because they were handled so much different than they are today. Also, back in the 19th century and younger, they seem to be much more brutal which is also very interesting. Anyway, I'm rambling. I love you and thank you fo all you do. I know I've said this before, but it's always true. And I don't blame you at all for putting the phrase explanation on here. I mean, if anything is distasteful it's me as a child happily singing the Lizzie Borden song. So I could never judge lmao

Exactly, she said crimes didn't happen, which is obviously not true, it simply wasn't reported or known as much
@sewageskank6730
@sewageskank6730 6 жыл бұрын
Beatrice Quaglieri Totally! It was so hard to solve crimes due to lack of knowledge and technology. It was hard to even decipher what was a crime or not. And it's really hard to spread the news when it took a week just to receive a letter. The amount of crime that was underreported back then is sky high, I'm sure. I understand why people think crime didn't happen in older eras, because that's how it seems, but it was entirely due to murders not being reported or not cared about. I'm sure people back then felt safer murdering others because of this? I mean, I haven't looked too much into this, but it seems like that is something that would happen. It was easier to get away with it. I'm just using her as an example because I mentioned her previously, but Lizzie was found innocent despite having so much circumstantial evidence against her. It was so difficult to prove anything for certain. She was let free despite everything. (also sidenote, I'm not saying for sure that she committed those crimes, but there are some things abt the case that's hard to ignore) I remember watching a doc on some family from centuries ago, and how the young child would kill people with axes for fun and it proved him worthy of being royalty. Like people had very narrow views on ethics back then. So I am certain crime was so much more common back then.
@lisamcdonald2877

About Lizzie Borden, part of the reason she was found not guilty was the tgen popular idea that women were weaker and more delicate than men. She appeared to grow faint when crime scene photos were shown in court. Also, she was from a more affluent family in the town, always an advantage.
