The FASTEST Fully 3D-Printed Mechanism I've Ever Made (and maybe the most dangerous...)

This mechanism uses a simple gear chain to achieve 1000+ rpm speeds in a fully 3D printed mechanism (no screws or additional hardware- just 3D Printed PLA). Using a 60 tooth gear meshed with a 20 tooth gear (3 to 1) attached to a 90 tooth gear meshed with a another 20 tooth gear (4.5 to 1), they multiply together to achieve a 13.5 to 1 total ratio. That means that the output spins 13.5 time for every 1 full turn of the crank.
I designed this mechanism as part of a fully 3D printable desk sculpture. It's still a work in progress, but I couldn't wait to show this thing in action!
If you're interested in seeing my entire collection of work, look no further than here:

Everyone always talks about torque everytime there's a video about these gear ratios, but I've never understood what they are and how they're related to the video.
@SpadeNya
@SpadeNya 3 жыл бұрын
@@JollibeenosHasYourCoordinates torque is a measurement of rotational force, think of it as spinning momentum. The more torque, the more you can move. However, gears change torque into speed. The bigger the output gear, the less speed it rotates with BUT that speed loss is turned into torque so the gear will be harder to stop, and will be able to move a gear with more load on it. Essentially, gears are spinning momentum levers. The bigger the diameter of the gear, the more it can turn speed to torque, the smaller the gear, the more it changes torque to speed. Do also try to remember that you can type the word into the search bar and have much more thorough explanation for free.

I mean the way I think about it is that, my body can recover from many instances of contact with acids, chemicals, sharp objects, etc. (Let me clarify by saying absolutely there are chemicals and machines that can permanently maim, dismember or kill you with minimal contact.) Even if concentrated acids at room temperature make contact with the skin on your hands you at least have 10-20 seconds (usually) to make it to a sink and wash it off. In this example, sharp plastic may cut you, but not take a finger off or something like that. All that said, your eyes absolutely cannot recover from significant trauma. Even a few mL of countless dilute chemicals and solvents, or any physical object (plastic, metal, wood, dust, etc.) can permanently scar your eyes. Vision is absolutely critical for living life as a human being because we are primarily visual creatures. My point isn’t that you shouldn’t care about protecting your hands and body (always wear proper PPE and be safe). It’s more so that you should be EXTRA CAREFUL about your eyes. (p.s. I know what you said was in jest but I just thought it was an interesting point you made so I wanted to throw my 2 cents.)

Always use teeth ratios that are relatively prime numbers, this gets you the best wear pattern, longest life and least noise. Look up "hunting tooth" for more information. If you have to get an exact integer ratio, it is best to use an idler gear with a prime number between the primary and driven. Same goes with chains and sprockets.

@biekgiek

This reminds me of a toy motorcycle from the 70's that had a dock with a crank handle that you used to spin up the rear wheel to pretty high rpm's. When you stopped cranking the toy bike would take off. Since the rear wheel was weighted and had a rubber tire, it would grip all kinds of surfaces, and would stay upright even after jumps and what not (gyroscopic stability). It was so much fun, and really painful if you happen to get your finger caught between the tire and the frame. Or one of your buddies spooled it up and then pressed the wheel against you. So many fond memories of so many dangerous toys.
