Heartburn in college changed my life too. I ate bottles of antacids and was prescribed nexium, and the doctor wanted me on anxiety pills too. After 2 more years of suffering I decided to try acupuncture. We chatted about food and unlike my "regular" doctors, the acupuncturist supported me trying a food elimination diet. 20 years later... I live on a farm and grow all my own veg, fruit, meat and herbal remedies. Heartburn set my life on a completely different course.

Sharing notes from Dr Berg: Antacids only work for a short time, requiring you to take more and more to keep your symptoms at bay. Through prolonged use, antacids will only make heartburn worse by depleting your stomach acid. Antacids are associated with the following side effects: • Bloating • Indigestion • Allergies • Increased infection in the stomach • Depression Antacids create a condition known as achlorhydria, which depletes your stomach acid, but you need your stomach acid to get rid of heartburn. Your stomach is very acidic and should have a pH between 1 and 3. Enzymes cannot be activated if you do not have the right pH. Heartburn is not a problem resulting from too much acid-it's a valve problem. Keeping the pH of the stomach between 1 and 3 keeps the valve shut. How to get rid of heartburn naturally: 1. The most important nutrient to eliminate and prevent heartburn is vitamin B1 (thiamine). Your stomach can not produce acid when you’re deficient in vitamin B1. A diet high in carbs depletes B1. Low B1 deprives the autonomic nervous system, which controls the valves of the stomach. Look for a natural source of vitamin B1 to get rid of heartburn. 2. Potassium and zinc are very important for your stomach acid. Try a good electrolyte powder and trace mineral supplement to increase your intake of these important minerals. Also, make sure you’re getting plenty of sea salt. 3. Increase your stomach acid. This triggers the valve at the top of the stomach to close. Apple cider vinegar and betaine hydrochloride can help acidify the stomach It’s important to note that if apple cider vinegar or betaine hydrochloride causes burning, you may have gastritis or an ulcer. In this situation, you need to heal the stomach before taking apple cider vinegar or betaine hydrochloride. Thank you Dr Berg! 🐱👍

Missinformation here, i had a hiatal hernia and my gastro told me that everything can be corrected with diet exercising your diagphram and eating well. Also gluten/ bread was one of the biggest trigger food I discovered I had. After 2 months, no more acid reflux, I am free from it, my stomach is healed and I can sleep like a baby. Everything can be healed with change of lifestyle, it can be diet, healing an ulcer, cutting of intelorance food like dairy or gluten, having tests for celiac disease. Consider this before getting a surgery because some doctor will just want you to get the surgery to hide the problem but after, they wont tell you why you have GERD which is not normal in the first place. For severe hernia where your stomach is literally popping out of your tummy, surgery is necessary. But the rest of the time, no. Your body can heal from a lot of things with a good lifestyle and the correct tests ( aka gluten, dairy, food allergies, even sugar can cause the sphincter to stay open )

Heartburn and gastric issues is what set me on a different direction also! I had endoscopic scans and was told I had the start of Barrett's esophagus, a hardening of the esophagus lining caused by the acid reflux and that if its not treated could lead to cancer. I was prescribed an acid reducing medication. I asked, "just till I heal?", but the doctor said, no for life. Being scared of getting cancer I took it for a while, but had side affects like nausea, which I couldn't handle, so stopped taking it. I looked for alternatives and found a youtube video from a doctor (I can't remember who), who said the problem is not enough acid and his remedy was more salt and more calcium. I did that and for me it worked. But this was just the beginning of my journey.

@alexlabra1562 tips for getting off PPI? Stubbornness. Lots of prayer. Sitting propped up with pillows at night until my back hurt worse than my belly. Avoiding triggers as much as possible. Also, otc pepcid. I started having heartburn when I was pregnant, and so skinny people would ask if I was anorexic. I was eating everything I could stuff in my mouth. Everyone assured me heartburn with pregnancy was normal. I was also working with my husband a lot and lifting way too much at times and would occasionally need to be checked for hernias in the groin area. First PPI was omeprazole. It helped for a while. Then dr increased the dose. Then switched to pantoprazole cause it was stronger. Then increased the dose of that. With age and weight gain that I blame on the drugs, I just kept getting worse. Started the surgery testing and haven't taken any PPI since. Triggers for me seem to be stress, lifting, and tomatoes. Eating small meals and refusing to play human forklift seem to help. I hope this helps some and wasn't too long winded!

Lo and behold, taking betaine hydrochloride instantly took care of the burning, pain, and discomfort. I've been taking it for about 5 days, and feel so much better it's unbelievable! That sounds a lot like my story. For years, I was just ignorant to what was going on with my health. Then a few yeas ago, I was getting tired of the acid reflux. So that eventually led me down a path to not only pay attention to my gut health. But find and realize all the other issues I was dealing with and not noticing all these years. I haven't fixed my situation, but the discipline I've built with caring about my health is on another level these days.

Same! Over the summer I thought I was dying; my insides burning from the inside. I never thought it could be acid reflux and my doctor even said it was an active heart attack. Mind you this pain lasted for about 3 weeks. I got into YT and Dr. Berg video on GERD popped up and I ran to Whole Foods and bought everything he suggested. Within three days I was able to stand upright and go to work. I literally thought I was on my deathbed bc I was so sick. Dr Berg also helped me heal my anemia after suffering for so long with brain fog and fatigue. One thing I've noticed is that everything always revolves around b vitamin deficiency when it comes to my health so I have to be very aware not to miss a dose.

You forgot one side effect of antacids, liver disease. Apparently the liver loves an acidic medium just like the stomach. This medium kills certain bugs. But on antacids, the liver pH changes and now the bugs can thrive.

Other brands are ok to but thiamax imo is the best. Just follow the dosage on the bottle. Just 1 a day and you could even taper it and do one every other day when your sympthoms become less. I used to get severe heartburn, it was so painfull and nothing helped. I tried antacids, and they might work once, try something else might work once . Exercise it would help, but then, after a few times, it didn't work either. The only relief I got, and it could take up to 2 hours sometimes more, but usually an hour. What I did was drink water it would relieve the pain momentarily, but then the pain would come back with a vengeance. I would also experience pain in my teeth or gums and in my head, usually in the temples. After consuming a half to three quarters of a gallon of water and urinating, it would give some relief until I had expelled most of the water I had consumed. I tried Prylosec without much help. I then went to Nexium. It didn't help if I was experiencing hartburn. But taking it daily did work, though on occasion I would get hartburn. Now if I don't take it for a few days my esophagus swells up and I've had much difficulty swallowing, especially meat. It gets stuck in my throat. This is very perplexing when it happens. I can breath but my airway is restricted. I have to tilt my head back, and patiently wait until it slowly goes down my throat. I have tried to drink some water, but that does not help, it makes it worse as it cannot flow past the food and risks water going into my lungs. Thanks Dr. Burg, I will try these recommendations. Unfortunately, KZbin does not relay the comments made to my comments. I must have said something that didn't line up with their agenda.

Years ago I started experiencing difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) that became more pronounced over time. I began to have panic attacks due to choking on food, especially at night. I never suffered from reflux but may have had silent reflux or LPS without knowing. Long story short, I made a connection between caffeine and the 'Charlie horse' in my esophagus on the right side about mid chest. I discovered it by chance when deciding to drop all caffeine because I knew I was addicted to it. After a month, I went out to lunch and got a cola. The issue immediately came back. I waited a few days and tried coffee. Back again. Black tea . . . Same thing. Green tea was the only thing that didn't trigger it. It still happens to this day if I drink caffeine. I went 'Ketovore' in 2021 after a Lyme diagnosis. Surprisingly, my allergies and post nasal drip disappeared! Now I know the PND was really LPR/silent reflux. Oh, and I quit clearing my throat, something I attributed to the PND. I only learned about LPR in the last year. Sometimes an elimination diet can help determine the triggers, as I discovered by accident with the caffeine.
