The 1994 Flèche Wallonne was unbelievable, I remember well the hostility towards the Italian riders with the journalists unleashed on the doping issue. The Belgian television even came to call the group of pursuers "Groupe Alcala", when in that group (full of Italians) there were also Bugno and Chiappucci. It was truly open war between Italy and the rest of the world of cycling. Except for Verbruggen who defended Italian teams... From my point ov view (I'm Italian) it was the golden era of Italian cyclism and I had a great time watching races, but obviously it was very controversial.

Berzin's peak result was there mostly because of internal grudges among the team. He declared he could have won the Giro alone, so alienating the favor of his teammates. In 1995 he was still at peak form. At the Euskal Bizikleta he fought with teammate Francesco Frattini, who he denied a victory. The feud produced one of the most impressive climbs of any time, that of the Alto Arrante in 11'55", with a VAM of 2029 m/h and an estimated power of 7,65 W/kg. The 1995 Giro was won by Rominger mostly because Berzin and Ugrumov fought each-other. In 1996 he was past his peak, but won a time trial at the Giro, two at the Tour de Swisse, one at the Tour de France, kept the yellow jersey for two days and was well into the race until stage 15, all of that running practically alone.

After Lance got kicked out some young Italian guy came out of nowhere and was shredding dudes in the mountains in the TDF. I remember Phil Leggett being his usual dopey self and calling the guy as the product of the now clean racing era we were about to enjoy. After a rest day they came back to the somber news that the dude was arrested and kicked out of the TDF and France for doping. I can't remember his name but years later in one last bid to make something of himself in cycling he ended up in the hospital and almost died, after... wait for it... blood doping using a dog's blood. If you can ever find his name it would make an amazing story.

Around that time I was a Volunteer Course Marshall for just about every major pro race on the East Coast of the US. Tour deDupont, Tour De Trump, US Pro Championships, and various other pro races in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. I can't believe I wasted my time following these doping clowns. That's how I lost my interest in baseball after the steroid era. Today I just want to ride a gravel bike where I live in Washington State for fun and exercise.
