Finding out that JFK was on one of these was not what I expected to learn today!

That "mahogany" line you're thinking about, is from DBZ Abridged. I would love for you to get back to that, but that won't happen until you get sick of this channel. Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍

See, it all makes sense when you understand that the founding father of the U.S. Navy was basically a pirate.

I presume you are talking about John Paul Jones, though to be fair there were several men that helped create the Navy and a few other names have rightly been thrown around for various reasons. But yes, John Paul Jones was a great tactician and harassed the coasts of the British Isles during the Revolutionary War. An interesting story regarding one raid against the British was that he took on a British vessel and ended up capturing it, unfortunately his flagship was lost and they had no colors (flag) to present. This technically made him a pirate as he was sailing a captured vessel with no flag. The Dutch port he arrived at was in a weird spot because they wished to remain neutral, but you can thank the British and their navy for essentially pissing off everyone at that time. So while the Dutch decided to "push" the Americans out after a few days for the appearance of neutrality, but they supposedly contacted and got a rough description from Benjamin Franklin (in France at the time) of what the flag should look like and Jones had the flag produced and the Dutch officially recognized the flag so they could politically screw the British over by not having legal authority to arrest Jones as a pirate. The flag is called the Serapis Flag (after the stolen British vessel Serapis that first donned the flag), also called the Franklin Flag, and it's a pretty cool looking flag.

There's a book called the Mosquito Fleet. Absolutely great read. Lots of stories and info about the PT fleet both in the Pacific and European theaters

Pres. John F. Kennedy while in command of P.T. 109 severely injured his back when the boat was stuck by a Japanese destroyer. Yet he towed an injured man through the water as they swam to a small island to be rescued. It's a good bit of history.

Main reason for making them from wood was to keep them as light as possible so they could be as fast as possible. The second reason was because there was plenty of wood avaIlable so they could build more boats with fewer roadblocks waiting to get more scare/highly demanded materials like steel or aluminum.👍

And not just any mahogany, but mahogany from the planet of Malchior 7, where the trees are 300 feet tall and breathe fire! From these trees, this desk was forged 2,000 years ago using ancient blood rituals of the Malchior people! Not only does this make my desk nigh-indestructible, but it can bend the fabric of the universe itself! Also it's a very fine material. Very expensive.

JFK's Brother Joe died while piloting a drone B-24, the bomber was packed with the same explosive used in torpedoes and was taken off with a human pilot at the controls to take it up to altitude, arm the explosives, then bail out and a chase plane would remotely pilot the drone into the target. Unfortunately, about the time he was supposed to arm the explosives, the aircraft exploded. Sadly, there are only about 12 of these remarkable boats left.

Let me put it to you this way. PT boats were an absolute threat to heavy cruisers and battleships. There is only so much gun depression that large naval guns can achieve, and PT boats, within a kilometer or two were absolutely untouchable by large naval guns. Light cruisers, destroyers, corvettes, and other PT boats were the only real threats to pt boats.

On ships not large enough for a rated Captain (subs, PT boats, Ds & DEs), the crew called him "Skipper".

I was stationed on Ranger, we called a Captain we respected Skipper too, it's a sign of respect and has nothing to do with the size of the command.

The Japanese were so afraid of the craft that they created a special type of airplane to attack them. The boats were supposed to go much faster than they actually did: the problem was that, due to the difficulty of obtaining spare parts, the Japanese destroyers could often keep up with them. John F. Kennedy's boat, PT-109, was cut in half by a Japanese destroyer. Most hulls were actually gun boats and raised absolute hell among enemy supply barges with 40mm Bofors automatic cannons.
