Don, I am planning to put empty frames into my hive next year to let the bees draw their own comb. As a first year beekeeper I do not have clean wax foundation so was going to let them draw their own completely. Would you string the frame with fishing line for them?

I tried your method with the fishing line and hair pins on my Dadent size frames. put one in for a week and when i checked the frame they had drawn the cells but chewed a big X right through the foundation following the lines of the fishing line. o.0 Has this happened to you before, do i need to embed ? Thanks

it happens typically when the bee's notice the wire too much, or when it is not embedded well. You were using pure wax foundation or else they would have not been able to chew it through. with pure wax the support wire MUST be embedded. Buy a spur wire embeder and it will push the wire into the wax and it should work better. you will get some chew out here and there, they know how much support the comb needs and will add proper supports as they need it
