Simply, the best European player i've ever seen. Watched him a lot back in the 1970s. That's the great thing being lucky to have watched the game over decades. You get a panoramic take on things.

Johan was way ahead of his time, absolute legend of the game, an arrogant madafakah, but such gifted folk are allowed. he smoked cigarettes all his life, which sadly had a giant hand in his death. His impact on how to play the game is now a standard, he didnt invent it, but he pushed it into football zeitgeist for shure. what i love most about him, apart from his footballing, was when he appeared at bergkamps testimonial match, i damn near wept. RIP to a true legend of the game.

Johan was the key to the new Dutch system of "Total Football". Just like Messi and Maradona, he was the best dribbler of his generation, and was an amazing scorer AND was one of the best in assisting others. He then became an amazing manager at Ajax. But it was when he came to Barcelona that he revolutionized the world as he was instrumental in Barcelona winning La Liga for the first time in many years, but more importantly, as a manager, he instituted the Total Football philosophy (which was later modified and became Tiki Taka) and instituted the football youth academy in Barcelona and did away with height and strength limitations for the students. Due to those changes the Barcelona youth academy produced players like Iniesta, Faberglas, Xavi, and of course, Messi.

Many people put Michael Laudrup up there with any of the big names including Cruyff, Pele or Maradonna. He was the star player for both Barcelona and Real Madrid during his career and I think Cruyff saw a lot of himself in the player. Laudrup still scored a lot of goals but he tended to play more of a deeper role in midfield. When Maradonna died FIFA re-released "Hero", the movie made about the Mexico '86 tournament, on KZbin. It showcases a number of big talents who were regarded as the talisman of each of the main teams competing. The filming of the tournament is unique and many people, including myself, feel it is the best film made about the sport. It is so nostalgic and they even got Michael Caine to do the narrating. It is such a paradox to compare the importance of the team that is reinforced constantly by coaches with the amount of responsibility placed upon a select number of key players who were around at this time like Platini, Zico etc. who have won a number of accolades in their own right. I'm only just middle aged but I've noticed that a lot of young people are oblivious to the fact that there were heaps of talented, unique players over the years that are worth a look in every position. What made a lot of these guys unique was the fact that all they did was play football from the age that they could walk and much of their talent was honed in their spare time, away from structured coaching and training, so it gave them unique abilities and perspectives on the sport. Prior to this you even had guys like Gerd Muller, who held the record for most goals scored in the World Cup until a couple of years ago. The thing you have to realise about Cruyff is that he brought a lot more to the game than just his skills - he mastered a new way of looking at the tactics of football and was part of the generation of Dutch footballers who pioneered "Total Football". This revolutionised the way the game was played and is the foundation upon which a lot of the game is built. It is about utilising space, passing and the interchangeability of player positions. This can be seen through the influence upon clubs like Barcelona and many of the stars and coaches they've put out since. Pep Guardiola is one of many who are carrying the mantle onwards in the modern era. There are lots of videos, quotes, articles, books etc. to back all of this up.

very good insights and quite on point... Cruyff was a rare species back in the day, he had skinny legs and was quite thin, while the typical player until that moment had usually strong legs and there was a preference for the bigger ones. But Cruyff proved that another type of body and athleticism was also suitable for playing football. I'd compare him with Mbappe for instance, but I think Mbappe is a little faster... although I find that his left foot isn't very good... so I give Johan the advantage of better skills. Always having in mind that comparisons are usually obnoxious, specially between players from different times and different positions

Great reaction and video. The 🐐 playmaker, this video doesn’t completely show his passing range but it is still a brilliant compilation nonetheless. Pelé and George Best are both worth a watch too if you haven’t done so already.

This footage isn't that good, it doesn't highlight his passing range - he was arguably the best passer ever.
