It would clearly be in Volvo's best interest to send someone with control boxes that are definitely not from the bad batch and get your engines running with out any issues, because every time you have problems with them, a few hundred thousand people get to see it!

Maybe a bit off topic. But Riley have you considered wearing some sort of "Sail shoes" which are more stable and safer then flip-flops which can also get wet and you can walk barefoot in them? there are some nice ones out there. For example the Merrell Men's Barefoot Current Glove or the NeoSport Paddle Water Boots. Also the Vibram FiveFingers Classic which is almost like barefoot walking. Just think you can up your "shoe game" on la Vagabonde to have something better then just Flipflops. The mentioned shoes give you more grip, safety, stability and probably are also nicer to wear since you don't have to worry about falling out on them or that they will break ;). Last but not least those also protect the feet from too much sun exposure and i heard Flipflops are not good for your back on the long term. Anyway just thought i mention those three models to maybe give you some inspiration to consider getting some.

As you have found out, even new boats break down. I was once told by the head of the warranty department for a major outboard motor company that the only difference between a new part and and old part is that the new part hasn't been tested yet. Sail on and be safe.
@tossed_about6 жыл бұрын
Stefan is right in his comments that sailing is very expensive. With secondhand boats, especially if under-equipped, it is not unusual to have to spend the same amount each year you outlaid to buy the boat on keeping it seaworthy and adding and maintaining modern cruising equipment. Adding secondhand bits and pieces is not always a great idea either. Great video btw! The 'tradie's flash' very nice touch.

Jeremy Mccubbin I agree and am hoping the electric motor for long range cruising becomes practical within the next few years. They're replacing diesels with a simple electric motor and electric car size battery banks along with small built in generator on the great lakes.
@billlan06 жыл бұрын
Not at all. It’s a sophisticated and complex boat. So far the issues have been generally minor. Specially now that they know about the control units. Best to shake it all out before the transatlantic crossing.
@dasimparmy22896 жыл бұрын
Was thinking the same. Those engines have been stinkers from the get go and the manufacture really needs to fix this for them. It's not a good look, but good on Riley!!
@sailnblue4976 жыл бұрын
"A sophisticated and complex boat"...quite true and a reason to evaluate that idea if you are a long range cruiser. Do you want to cruise or worry about circuit boards in Tonga? I strongly prefer simplifying whenever possible, but a sexy big cat will not be simple. The more moving parts a machine has, the more likely something is not working. If you are in the Med or the Caribbean, you are close to resupply, expensive as it may be. Unless you are loaded, keep it simple, with systems you understand and can fix yourself. An expensive new cat is beautiful to look at and lovely to sail but is a poor choice if a 10 or 20K repair at random moments would be a problem.
