The problem is not that the Church respects women and values children, but that it neither respects nor values good men. On Mothers’ Day, the sermon will be all in praise of motherhood. On Father’s’ Day, the sermon will scold men and demand that they shape up. Men are the invisible members, unless there is a need for more money or heavy lifting. There are children’s ministries, teens ministries, women’s ministries…. but rarely a men’s ministry, and if there is one, it will meet infrequently and will be focused on everything except what men need. There is a difference between serving, and being a serf. If you want to talk about Christ as a model, keep in mind how little he brooked argument and how often he was prepared to say tough and “hurtful” things.

@peterwebb8732 Exactly why early churches had elders and leaders but no pastors. Speaking was democratic. Tithes and offerings were collected for poor people and occasionally traveling apostles. Now tithes and offerings are bribes to pastors to take responsibility away. Ever notice how so many churches that praise mothers on mother’s day and scold men on father’s day often have gaggles of single mothers fawning over the pastor? Even if platonic, so many male pastors have their creepy “holy harems” of single women who idolize the pastor. If churches had the integrity to get rid of pastors and encourage men to be active as they were in the original churches, we’d see both men and healthy (non-codependent, addicted to crumbs of attention from emotionally unavailable men i.e. pastors) women returning to churches and we’d see churches returning to serving their communities instead of existing to serve the pastor’s ego.

You're right, except it is cause women are "respected" , and for doing nothing but existing. They're respected above men, therefore catered to women. And women don't have the same morality as men, so church is going to lose its moral authority. And you're going to have single mommies there to find a daddy instead of worried about the community.

Church is feminized becouse it lacks male membership. Pastors who constantly preach to a mainly female audience over time soften their message. In fact their whole character softens to the point that female pastors are more masculine than male pastors whose congregations are mostly women. David Pawson points this out in his book "Leadership is Male". He makes the case that without strong male participation in local churches, Christianity is doomed. He was greatly struck by the contrast between male attendace in churches and in mosques in England. Pawson warned that unless Christians reclaim men for God, England will become an islamic country.

I'm not disagreeing; you've got a very valid point. But I've long thought that men and boys need to be challenged. That they need to be presented with tasks that call for commitment and boldness. There are plenty of spiritual battles that need to be waged with, prayer, fasting, and outspoken opposition or support.

I think there is room for femininity and masculinity together in the church. However, I agree that in the evangelical church, there is a lean towards emotional wooing of congregants in the collective worship and preaching. I didn't see that growing up. Although, when I was growing up, there was much more emphasis on moral behavior... maybe to an extreme.

@@shaneashby5890 I think there became an emphasis on "church growth", as in, bringing more people into the local church. I think that led to particular strategies like making church atmosphere less formal and more fun, and more of an "emotional experience." I'm not saying church can't be fun, but it should look different to the world than a rock concert.

I am not a Christian but this historical dimension to the Jesus story is fascinating. The Roman acceptance of "Boy Love" seems bizarre to us today but many married Emperors were accompanied by boy companions on state business. Another point was the infanticide issue, recently an archaeological dig unearthed the remains of 100 newly born infants in a pit. Some experts believe it's possible they were discarded by prostitutes.

Great information shared but, it wasn't addressing the question asked. I could see what Prof. Pearcey shared as perhaps setting the stage for an actual address of the issue raised. In truth, the Body of Christ is primarily spiritual, not physical and cannot be feminized or masculinized., yet it may have characteristics of both but not based on a physical standard but on the significance of each as a facet of God's character and nature. That's my understanding. What we see with our eyes here on Earth is a convolution of souls, bodies, traditions, customs, preferences and agendas... and not all of them are generated by the Holy Spirit. The Adversary operates just as he did in the beginning. He appeals to the vulnerable to undermine the strength of unity and order. The "uncovered" woman is drawn in by an appeal to cover herself without dependency on the male. In today's society women generate a dependable stream of monetary and social value which is easily exploited by those motivated by money and power. All "shepherds" are not good shepherds.

THE NUNS In the 50s I attended a Catholic boys military academy where the Sisters of Mercy handled the classrooms and WWII veteran, retired ex-military handled the military side. The hands-off military guys were pushovers compared to the hands-on nuns who wouldn't hesitate to give you whatfer when you got out of line. Those loving, caring women poured a lot of solid foundation in my life. Based on my experience, strategically speaking when it comes to raising children, women are the best disciplinarians in the home/family structure with Dads always backing them up. Hence why children raised by single mothers are much more likely to become criminals than those raised by a single father.

Putting the correct value on women and children has been a very good thing but the idea that the feminization of the church has been a good thing is flat falsehood. The church in the west is by and large failing and mostly ineffective to say the least. The fact that men don’t go or don’t put effort into church is the problem and the church needs to start changing how it operates so men have their roles recognized again. That doesn’t mean putting women and kids down but it definitely needs to focus on men and what they need to thrive over women and kids.

Are you talking about the fashionable amalgam of transreligious psychology that takes the form of crystal healing, garden Buddhas, "energy", affirmations, and self-help mantras?
