Thank you for raising some great memories. My wife and I have sailed this trip 3 times - twice from North Shields and once from Ijmuiden. It is possible that we'll be doing it again in September. We lived for a time in North Shields and could catch the local bus down to the terminal and home again. Last time we did this voyage (2018), a propeller apparently broke outside Sunderland, so the ship limped across the North Sea, taking around 25 hours. Ruined our ongoing plans a bit, but we were able to enjoy a wonderful free lunch with heaps of smoked Salmon, and we had 18 unexpected and happy hours in Amsterdam. Thought of this the other week as we sailed across Cook Strait in NZ - a shorter but also very interesting journey..

Excellent video. I did this trip in 2018, but one way only, Amsterdam to Newcastle, with King Seaways. It was a very nice trip, would like to do it again. I did like the ship, a little bit old, but in a good way. I also travelled with Color Viking (later Jupiter) in 1994 and 1997, from Bergen to Newcastle. That journey took about 24 hours (via Haugesund and Stavanger). Sadly, that service stopped in 2008.

After my disastrous abandoned journey to Newcastle from King's Cross last December, I'm wondering if Liverpool Street > Harwich > Hook of Holland > Amsterdam > Newcastle might be a more enjoyable and reliable route. Your cruise down the Tyne looks beautiful.

Nice cabin. Looks like fun. Realised when you mentioned the ships former life as the Spirit of Tasmania I and my partner have sailed in her twice. Once was a very rough crossing.

Its rather strange to see a Danish flag at the stern of a wessel there are in service from Newcastle and Amsterdam, but it makes me proud as a dane. at 12:15 - OH MY GOSH, do they even shows Danish comercials on board - thats a Rema 1000 commercial.

great video and being a Sandancer have travelled countless times on this service and numerous loveable DFDS ferries past and present. just wondering why you left early, as the weather looked fine, but I would be happy with that as the longer the sea experience the better

I've been on that but not quite Newcastle, North Shields, and a good distance from Amsterdam at Ijmuiden about the same distance from Amsterdam as Darlington is from Newcastle!I walked from Percy Main when i got the Metro when we went to Bergen on the Fjord Line ferry which, sadly, has stopped running or rather sailing.

Used to do that trip regularly until P&O treated their British crews like crap, then discovered that DFDS is far better value for money and haven't looked back!

I do this trip on a regular basis for our trips to Germany. As a foot passenger, the route is far more convenient for those intending train travel onwards (the timing is perfect for those intending to use the sleeper trains onward from Amsterdam Centraal). For those who are mobility impaired, the busses from Newcastle are easily accessible whilst on the Dutch side, if you notify DFDS that you require assistance, they will arrange for an accessible taxi for travel between Ijmuiden (pronounced Aye-mow-den) - my wife and I will be travelling next month and they have agreed to drop and pick us up from the taxi rank at Amsterdam Centraal (only a 50 metre walk as opposed to a much longer walk to the coach stop on De Ruijterkade. If assistance is requested, we have always been asked to wait at check-in whilst they arrange for a crew member to come and collect your baggage and take you straight to your cabin - similarly, on arrival, you wait in your cabin for a crew member to collect your baggage and then escort you through all the landing formalities and straight to your transport. First class service and always with a smile!

@@TheGeordieTravels On the way out we are on King Seaways (has a dedicated lounge on board for those travelling Commodore class) and Princess Seaways for the return. Personally, I think King Seaways has the edge with the lounge but Princess Seaways has the edge when it comes to the buffet-restaurant. Have a good trip.
