The Fight Against A US Mining Company in Jamaica Continues

Jamaica was once the world’s leading exporter of bauxite, which is the ore from which aluminum is made, but decades of mining have taken a toll on the land and the people. With reserves depleted, the government is now pushing to move mining operations into the most ecologically sensitive part of the island known as Cockpit Country. We return to Cockpit Country to get an update on the fight to protect it.

Any bauxite Company will takeover if the American Company decides to leave and all of the Politicians would have to give back all of the money that the American Company gave them in order to obtain the Rights to dig for bauxite. I was about to say the same. Here in Australia we have had to deal with this stuff and face up to and own some damn ugly mistakes from the past and we are still far from settling it. There's been some seriously ugly stuff that has been done in the island states around Australia and some of it has involved Australian companies. There is maybe a 1% superrich elite, but underneath that there is definitely a surrounding bunch in layers from 10% to more that all still are benefiting of thieving and pillaging in the now and money from the past. The one thing I'm most proud of as a Jamaican is that the food naturally grown doesn't have GMO and is delicious. Living in America its hard to get Jamaican good if you don't grow it or live in Florida. Many of us Living overseas would greatly appreciate more access to Jamaican grown produce and Jamaican baked foods. It's unfortunate there's not enough exporting of these to America and easier access to these goods especially in comparison to other international countries

The interview with Audley Shaw is so demeaning and emblematic of how these people in power think. Saying he doesn’t know the towns there then in the same breath saying most of the lands remained untouched. Then saying “their interest is to focus on the needs of the people”, while mining next to a school. I’ve never understood this type of negligence when the earth is all we have.

The US is a puppet of their big corporations, and the Chinese are ambitious (since none of their corporations are acting without the approval of the CCP). What about the citizens that own land that have resources like ground water, a ground fed pond, minerals in the ground, etc, should the person that owns that property have the value of the property stolen out from under him by others who had nothing to do with the property? If you vote by direct democracy you're just allowing mob rule to decide what to do with it, and that is a slippery slope, next thing you know everyone's personal property will end up being subject to being taken away as soon as the mob feels they can profit from it.

oh yes I remember seeing this a few months ago. I love how they are still serious about the cause. A lot of Caribbean islands are giving our resources away at maddening rates to the Chinese (I should know, here in T&T we're basically giving away our Pitch Lake and contracts for large scale projects). We are yet to get honest answers as to what are the kickbacks being gained though.... Maybe VICE should come here and do some investigations like they did with the crime situation a few years ago

I'm from Clarendon so I've seen this first hand. My father worked for ALCOA. They moved an entire neighborhood to build a new mud lake. That's a lake of mud filled with chemicals as a waste product of the bauxite process. I rode my bicycle up on one of them as a kid with my cuz, that thing bubbles and sizzles like a volcano, but its mud.

I remember, while at my relative's house in Discovery Bay, I would hear the trains coming through with bauxite ore. Since, I know that Mining company has been there for years, I always wondered where in my country they were finding such an "infinite" supply. I found it deeply concerning, wondering if they had dug deep enough to find the center of the Earth. I really don't like this industry for this reason: Taking away from our land to benefit the advancement of other nations. I think we need to find other ways to contribute to GDP than this. We survived the demise of the Sugar Revolution, we surely can do without this industry. They have had too many years of our land. They have overstayed their welcome and it is time for them to go.

I heard an expert on a local Jamaican tv show said bauxite mining contributed about 3% to the GDP around US $1B in contrast the cost of bauxite in terms of social and environment impact was around US$18B. There's been bauxite mining in Jamaica since the 1950s. We all know its a finite resource but our leaders didn't have and still doesn't have a vision of us moving away from mining.

That interview with the Mining Minister Audley; the way he swallows, rubs his hands, looks down to hide his gaze and smiles... he is very cognizant of the gravity of the conflict of interest and duality of the government's actions. When the Sister spoke of the the perception of the Maroon people it should not be overlooked either; colourism and subsequent cast systems are very much embedded in many Jamaicans and plays a part in perceived worth.

You can't steal our Bauxite. You can't tell me there has been mining for 70yrs, and then act like another 70yrs of mining would be beneficial. I've been to the land where my mom and my grandparents grew up and parts of it have been mined, and they weren't made rich. My uncle lived in the same shack his father did. Part of what makes the people of Jamaica is the land and the food. Anyone promoting mining operations who doesn't live near them is a crook. Strip mining lush vegetation and leaving barren soil behind is not progress by any metric. You do not need money, but you do need water, food, and shelter, which Bauxite in the ground can provide. How many rolls of aluminum foil do we really need?

He met with the other chiefs to buy them out and turn them against chief curry. But I must tell you that NONE of them have the sense that chief Currie has. If mining takes place in these areas that they want to; Jamaica will be DOOMED because it will KILL our water sources , and our food. Very powerful documentary. Reminds me a lot of another documentary “The Coconut Revolution” of an indigenous community in Papúa New Guinea fighting against a British owned mine destroying their natural environment. Highly encourage everyone to watch that documentary on KZbin.

A massive conflict of interest from the principals in a Government that owns 51% of mining leases, negotiated without the participation of the communities directly affected by this exploitation. The Government should recuse itself from this affair as it is likely that only a few principals sitting at the current negotiating table will benefit financially via modes of compensation that should be subject to third party internal audit. The island's ecosystem is under threat at time when global warming and other climate and environmental factors threaten water resources around the world. Water is a vital resource and Jamaica with its 200 rivers should e protected. Hopefully the Chief can petition the United Nations (UNEP) program to designate the Cockpit Country as a protected environment and extend human rights provisions to the inhabitants.

I couldn't believe this... I was born in Jamaica and left when I was 8. 32 years old now, and I remember huge bauxite areas in Manchester, JA. My head began to hurt seeing the school and someone's home so close to digging. Jamaica's government has no spine. The people depend on the land so much, so much of my family does. I remember taking minibusses to pass sites, the dust and particles coming from the sites are hazardous. Jamaica has to do way, way, way better than this.

I presume the owner at the moment is Glencore plc, headquarter in Baar, Switzerland. The core shareholder at the moment seems to be the Quatar Investment Authority. If someone might want to give a bit pressure on the boiler it may be helpful to go to the headquarter of Glencore and the embassy of Quatar in Bern, Switzerland. A cooperation with local environmental activists in Switzerland might be helpful. A good documentation like 1000 other ones before. That`s it? Just connect the activists in Jamaica with those in Switzerland.
