During WW1, the ancient city of Baku, today the capital of Azerbaijan, became a battlefield. But as international forces gathered on the shores of the Caspian Sea, they weren't just fighting for land. Industrialisation and rapid advances in military technology meant that oil became a strategic commodity, and as such, Baku became the site of a new kind of modern warfare.

Elməddin Abdullayev I'm not going to start an argument with you now, especially if you're giving Wikipedia as a source (I love Wikipedia, and I believe it is reliable, but not articles where there is a lot of controversy and bias, imo). You can do more research if you want, on your own, if you have the courage to. Just try to look somewhere outside Aliyev Khan's control.
