We host a roundtable discussion with three leading Black scholars about the College Board's decision to revise its curriculum for an Advanced Placement course in African American studies after criticism from Republicans like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The revised curriculum removes Black Lives Matter, slavery reparations and queer theory as required topics, while it adds a section on Black conservatism. The College Board, the nonprofit organization that administers Advanced Placement courses across the country, denies that it buckled to political pressure. "Florida is a laboratory of fascism at this point," says Khalil Gibran Muhammad, professor of history, race and public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. We also speak with two scholars whose writings are among those purged from the revised curriculum: Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, professor of African American studies at Northwestern University, and E. Patrick Johnson, dean of Northwestern's School of Communication and a pioneer in the formation of Black sexuality studies as a field of scholarship.

The problem is that the LGBTQ communities struggle, isn't the same struggle for the Black struggle, I Agree that both groups have issues to work on bit both issues are completely different, and they both are being joined together, Blacks have been fighting over 400 years against opposition in America and its a totally different struggle, this is like saying police brutality is the same as environmental reform

True, but there are people who are both Black and queer, so they understand the struggle of both. And the relationship of police brutality and environmental degradation is linked by one factor - dominance culture perpetuated by a small group of ultra wealthy and powerful individuals and institutions. Violence and control directed towards Black people and violence and exploitation of natural resources for profit come from the exact same source…

Sure, some Blacks are gay, ( just like every other race ), but an entire subject area, devoted to simply that? No thanks. Don't do Black people any favors? You never have before.... ALSO: Most Blacks have always resented how White liberals "decided" to join together the Civil Rights Movement, with the Gay Rights Movement. Nobody asked Blacks, if we were interested in that. All of a sudden, ( out of the blue ), back in the late 1970s, and '80s, you began hearing the Civil Rights Movement, and the Gay Rights Movement mentioned in the same breath. Appearing together in the same news stories. Covered by the press, as if there was some union between the two movements. That's never been the case. And it's not true today, either. Most black people, want nothing to do with the Gay Rights Movement, whatsoever. Instead of seeking shelter around Blacks, and our Civil Rights Movement, gays will have to make their own way. Just like Blacks did.

@@SpokenWord4 Sexuality issues appear in James Baldwin's work even if it isn't always expressed front and center. In fact, sexuality is a part of literature, and has been for thousands of years. Even the Bible, which is mainly literature, is full of discussions of sexuality. And "The Song of Solomon," one of the most beautiful poetic books of the bible, is suffused with eroticism that is inseparable from the general theme of Love. So, if you want to exclude discussion of sexuality, then you must either ban literature or heavily censor it.

But there are and have always been gay and lesbian people in our community, so that is at least a PART of our history. There were gay people in the civil rights movement, including Bayard Rustin(who some credit with being the behind the scenes main nuts and bolts organizer of March on Washington). There were gay or bi folk in the Harlem Renaissance like Langston Hughes. And James Baldwin, a gay man, was probably the most powerful literary voice of the Black movement at least from the early to mid-1960s. But I think people didn't talk about it so much then; partly because it wasn't popular, and partly because they feared that it might discredit the Movement itself. But the gay were there and a part of the history, of black history.

In the 1942 USDA film *Hemp for Victory,* a Black man is seen performing the same job which the majority of slaves were tasked. It is called 'breaking,' where handfuls of hemp stalks are threshed over a table while a heavy wooden bar is slammed down to crush the stalks to separate the fibers within. That fiber is what made the United States of America. So, Black Americans were persecuted for hundreds of years to work in the Cannabis fields, and then Cannabis was outlawed as an excuse for police to target poor minorities. *Hemp for Victory* ends the drug war, but that is why not a single news outlet in the US will talk about it. There is an official .gov link to the video from the US National Archives. It became public in 1990.

@@optimisticfuture6808 No, it's a crime against humanity. Cannabis Sativa was demonized in the early 1920s because a machine was invented in 1917 that could crush the stalks of hemp plants and remove the fiber faster than had previously been done by hand for thousands of years. This was the same very racist era as the Red Summer of 1919 and the burning of Tulsa in 1920 among numerous other examples. So, the term "Marihuana" was contrived to turn public opinion against Cannabis by associating it with Mexican immigrants and poor minorities. Cannabis prohibition has been used for the last 100 years as a ready excuse for police to target, harass, intimidate, arrest, beat and kill Americans, especially people of color. It is an ongoing crime against humanity that the *Hemp for Victory* film can be online at an official US government website and barely anyone knows about it because no one in national media has the courage to showcase the film to the public. I appreciate the education of the speakers. And I felt compelled (obligated) to comment on the whole bit about ... something to the effect of: "How can we expect others to help/defend us if we can't help/defend ourselves." If a person is being attacked (in ANY way), I think it is often, in part, BECAUSE they are in a weakened position of being ABLE to defend themselves from it. Add to this, THAT they are being attacked (ESPECIALLY if unjustly)... which requires them to focus on protecting themselves from the attack as best they can, while also recovering from the attack. IF they talk to anybody about what happened to them, my hope is that the informed party would ask them permission to defend them and be specific as possible about HOW they intend to do so and how this might foreseeably affect them (within reason). That they would do their best to defend others as well from such an attack (as well as themself, obviously). But I think, generally, it's a measure of human decency to help, protect and stand up for each other even if (and, potentially, ESPECIALLY if) the receptive party is unable to do that for themself.

I’ll say this, ANYONE that describes themselves by a color (ie:BLACK-MAN/WOMAN) is LOST! I watch your show daily, but I must admit that you don't represent the entire balance of views from the Black community. Some African American/Black People are not teaching or want others to teach our children about people's lifestyle, sexuality, and political opinions regarding Black History. As an African America Black Straight Woman, I didn't see myself in this whole interview. Please do better when discussing true-lived African/Black Americans topics and history. We are not a monolith. So sad that the only thing you focus on is Queer, Black Lives Matter, and left-wing issues! That is about 10% of my community. And to be very honest the bully and cancel culture comes from that (10%) community. When people remain quiet (can't express or share their views) for fear of being targeted, they quietly go and vote against that 10%.

Left wing issues are held by far more than 10% of the community. Reparations, mutual aid, environmental racism, and further civil rights battles? All left wing and very important to many. Pertaining to queer people, what you are doing is trying to erase minorities in your community because their existence makes you uncomfortable. Not a good reason in the slightest. Black queer people are a legitimate black experience and a part of the history as a whole. Teaching kids that other people outside the majority exist, have always existed and some include prominent figures in history is not controversial. Just existing while being queer is not inherently sexual or threatening. You are right that we are not a monolith, so no reason to remove information about any aspect of the community.

It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with the BLM movement. The movement has been one of the most prominent forces in the last couple of years. It is the reason more police officers are being prosecuted for wrong doing. How do you discuss recent events without mentioning BLM? I don't believe reparations as a realistic goal. But leaving it out of the curriculum is nuts. And no James Baldwin? Baldwin was one of the most prominent Black authors of the 20th century. Also, some Black folks are Queer. A discussion of their history is certainly in order.

@@rolandawilkins7607 It should not. There are plenty of crazy, hyper controlling parents that would gladly knee cap their children to prevent them from learning more and diverging into their own person. Also, I personally don't know the sexuality of everyone in that interview, so for all I know there was one. Apparently, you have some kind of shitty super power to tell that sort of thing though.

I'm glad KYT commented on the College Board's decision. The Dean was happy to be in the banned list but went on to show that maybe he's not worthy by chickening out of critiquing the CB and chose the easy way of going after the politician. Both deserve scrutiny. In life, some people are just happy to ride the coattails.
