With their modern liveries, headlight facelifts and new coach doors and interiors, the HSTs hardly look like old trains, they still look very stylish and modern. I know they are 45+ year old trains, but it's sad to see them go.

I remember them entering service on the western region, went to Bristol to see them and got an intercity 125 t shirt which I still have and it still fits 47 years later. Fantastic trains, they only build bland stuff today.

I hope to get some (more) footage of HSTs before they are taken out of service (i managed to get some footage in Morpeth, and i am hoping to get some footage at one of the level crossings closer to where i live (getting into Morpeth early enough was a pain in the neck, i had to walk the first part, setting off at stupid o clock, then catch the 6 something bus))

Between 28th and 30th August 2023 I was fortunate enough to pay a three-day visit to Bristol so I was lucky to photograph a few of GWR's Castle short HST sets in service as well as CrossCountry's 43 007 and 43 008 recently painted in their 1970s and 1980s BR 'Heritage' liveries as well as 43 357 and 43 303 painted in the standard CrossCountry silver & grey livery at Bristol Temple Meads station. One thing is for sure, it will be the end of an era when the last HSTs calling at Bristol Temple Meads are gone forever.

I do Newcastle to Newton Abbot then on to Torquay so often and always choose the hst. On occasion I've ended up with a hateful voyager . I'd rather drive than be on one of those. A sad September coming up 😢

the end of this year is going to be pretty painful. I dont want to say goodbye to the HST. the GWR is this year apparently, they are being dragged off one by one right now by the deltic of death as I call it. Im regularly travelling on the GWR one at the moment, not happy about the withdrawl atall.

If I were to be honest, Replacing these trains is already a bad idea.. I know they’re old and all but, Cross Country’s trains are already overcrowding with it’s trains, and replacing the HST’s could only make overcrowding worse on their services, as the 810’s for EMR aren’t introduced yet until probs next year or 2025, and with the 222 transferring to Cross country soon… Probs the same with most of Avanti’s 221’s when the 805 begin service. KEEP the HST’s for longer!

I was on an XC 221 earlier this week and firstly, it was great that it had 2 x 5car 221s on the service... BUT.... the drinks trolley was only on one of the sets :(

@@scrsucks1470 So the 222s are staying with with EMR? If true, they should probably do so until electrification to Leicester is done, then the 810s can enter service. XCs Voyagers are already overcrowded, I've seen a few at Bristol Temple Meads rammed full. Maybe some new 9-coach bi-modes could work since EMUs are out of the question for quite a while.

The hst is the best train ever procured by British rail. Nothing can ever replace it, voyagers etc soulless rubbish in comparison. But the best hsts were when they were valenta powered. Hst to swanage......wonderful.

Thats because the Avanti Voyagers have a different cab that XC drivers aren't trained on. The request for training has been refused hence no Avanti voyagers on XC. Whereas GC have received a couple of them and HAVE had the training

Its all about safety and budget unfortunately so thats why we get trains that have ironing board seats, and actually are NOT designed for long distance intercity but for local services!!

Class 43s were formerly used on GNER - Great North Eastern Railway 🚃 that ran from London to Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 via northeast of England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, EMR - East Midlands Railway 🚃 and finally GC - Grand Central. Until the the year 2002, it was called VT - Virgin Trains 🚆 that had plenty of class 43s on the route and finally replaced by class 220s and 221s. On the GC - Grand Central route are worked by class 180s are 180101-108/112/114 have replaced class 43s. On the LNER - London North Eastern Railway 🚃 are the class 800s and 801s. Train 🚆 company GWR - Great Western Railway 🚃 has limited amount of class 43s holds 4 carriages are used on the long distance main line service from Penzance to Cardiff Central.
