I get infuriated when people (without trades) say there are no longer any good British tradesmen, in my opinion we are still some of the best in the world and I doubt anyone out there could top this video, the working out alone is spectacular. This is the job of a 4 man team, an technical drawer, a joiner, an inventor and a talented brick layer. Brilliant Rob.

First of all Rob, I am so pleased to see someone promote the craft like you’ve done. In reality the majority of us will never see these kinds of opportunities much less know what to do with them, I’ve had a few. I’m 62 and temporarily disabled but I’ve said many times that most guys wouldn’t know a good job if they were looking at it. And that’s because many contractors are only concerned with numbers and when you’ve been trained that way it’s very hard to get it out of your head. I’ve been very fortunate in that during my schooling and formidable years it’s been drummed into my head to get it right and get it good first, the speed will come. But to be able to solely do work like this where it’s all about the product what a joy that must be. Thanks again Rob for promoting the craft in a very positive light, keep it up. Larry

Rob, you are a genius and have balls of steel to even attempt to build something like that. You are a true master craftsman and deserve all the success in the world. You should really think about writhing your own bricklaying book. There are lots of informative books around but they all lack the kind of detailed instruction you can offer. Super work!

rob songer I think it would make one helluva book. My foreman (20+ years ago) had an ancient book with really detailed bonds arches etc years ago, but I doubt you can still buy it today. I remember the book by Nash, but it was nowhere near as good. Perhaps it might be possible to put out an eBook?

Really cool project. I'm impressed you did the tudor arch right into the column. I have a spiral chimney on my house, and I really wanted to try a spiral segmental arch in second year, but I didn't have the time to do the arch form. I don't think many have the appreciation for the compound miters in your arch, especially with two different radius points. Your method to determine and cut the voussoirs is very impressive. The template I used was a plywood square with nails in the bottom to determine placement on the course below, but I like your angle iron jig. excellent job.

Hi Sam, my original prototype was a timber one but it was too limited for the times I used it so I made the adjustable aluminium to suit any twist, and a variety of pier sizes. It will retain at about £75

Amazing. I'm a mason myself, and I have a couple of questions... If you're at liberty to say, what do you charge for that amount of labor? The template building, cuts, and time can't be cheap. You may have answered this in one of the other three parts, but how do you joint/strike the joints unreachable due to the template?
@danielgatenby62568 жыл бұрын
ryder7984 that's exactly what I was thinking about the price . but I guess once they have taken the template away that will have to grind out the unpointed joints and repoint them . that's what I would do anyway . I'm a master builder and just getting my head round setting out the template would take a day lol

Great stuff. How did you work out the dimensions of the voussoir template in the first place? Are there rules of thumb based on the shape/type of the arch you're building or do you get some mathematical bod to do some calculations? Can you figure it out by doing technical drawings of the arch? Apologies if my question seem naive.
