I'm so glad my Christian dad didn't beat me with a sack of doorknobs when I told him I had become muslim. My mom, doesn't even acknowledge it. She walked in on me during salat, and reacted as if she caught me masturbating. If I start talking to it with my dad, she leaves the room. My dad was brought to tears of joy when he was heard. There's no pictures of me in their house, pictures of everyone that's dear to my mom, from my brother, sister, cousins, family dog, her friend, her FRIEND'S family dog.... nope, not one picture of me on the fridge or in the house. I would rather her yell at me, at least then she's not acting like it doesn't exist. At least my dad gets it, sort of.

"Muslim-light" (as you call it) is exactly what was practiced by the early companions in Makkah when many of them were drunkards and weren't even commanded to pray 5 times a day. The Qur'anic verses coming down during this time emphasized BELIEFS not RULES. Yet you're not affording today's converts this same stair-step approach to building their faith and practice. Allah was not rigid with the companions who converted and so we should not be so rigid with the converts of today!

They did not make hijrah IMMEDIATELY upon things becoming difficult. They were persecuted in Makkah for 13 years at first. This is an example for converts today and for all times. Give them the TIME they need to BUILD their faith! Everyone is different. They'll go at their own pace. The key is encouraging them to improve and give up the old ignorant habits and move towards the correct and total deen. Besides, the early companions had the noor and miracles of the Prophet (P) himself as a support.

My Salutation and my Salaam to my beloved brother in Islam, Br, Suhaib. I know him from Edmond OK. He was my Imam in the small mosque in Edmond. At that time he was going to a mosque in Norman OK to learn and memorize Koran. I once talked to his mother and tried to persuade and convince her to join her son and give Shahadah. She said that she had gained a real loving son when Suhaib converted to Islam. She was very supportive of Suhaib's new belief and was not objecting his conversion. However, she was not prepared at that time to accept Islam and join her son's belief. That was in 1997-1998 and Insha-Allah, she is already a Muslim. Insha-Allah, Suhaib and i will meet in Jannat.

Some people talk very eloquently and others speak more colloquially. The Prophet learnt the dialects of all the tribes and spoke to them on various levels. Many Muslims relate to this scholar and really enjoy his charisma. Those who dislike should naturally find and alternative scholar. Only a weak low Muslim would insult him.

I am an American who became Muslim. there is ONE ALLAH and ONE FORM OF ISLAM. attaching any label to Islam is bid'ah. the same can be said about Arab culture being Islamic. the Holy Qur'an was revealed for ALL OF HUMANITY. For each person the duration of that phase varies. For me it was about a year after shahadah. For you it was "cold turkey". All I'm saying is that we cannot expect other converts to do it as fast as we did. We cannot hold them to the standard of the companions who were the best generation. It's neither fair nor realistic.

He is a Sufi and the Sufis like the Shi'a use taqiyya. Those people who are those situations should ask Allah to relieve them from those situations. They should be patience with the hardship; slowly and intelligently adapt the Islamic way of life. Most of the time people who are in those situations and remain in them for extended periods of time, I have seen eventually leave Islam or eventually Islam becomes a minor aspect of their life.

I disagree that "hardship is because of fear" in ALL CASES. In many cases, especially with converts from say Jewish or Hindu backgrounds where there is a lot of historical animosity, the hardship is due to a lack of knowledge & therefore a lack of wisdom in how to deal with the VERY sensitive & emotional situation they're facing with their family. The taqwa is there otherwise they wouldn't have converted in the 1st place. Yes the taqwa can increase, but the key in my opinion is knowledge/wisdom.

I misread "she" as "he". Although I still disagree she should make hijrah because many converts (myself included) experience issues like this & often it's a phase that passes with time & with an increase in wisdom on behalf of the convert & people around them. We need as many converts as possible practicing Islam openly in America in order to "indigenized" the religion. Of course if her life is in danger than it would be different. What the imam is recommending is a fair & temporary compromise.

it's the way he was raised, born, grew up... Suhaib (William) Webb, dude, grew up in the hood and that's just how he naturally speaks. He ain't TRYING. He's just being himself and I commend him 4 that ..... sure, some men in the audience, particularly the elders and people from "back home" ..might not get what he is saying; but this talk of his is addressed to the new generation, the Muslim youth and Muslims who grew up here in the west, so it's completely fine & relevant, etc.

Subhan' Allah I hate to make assumptions but I think it's clear that you're not a convert. This black-and-white rigid approach of "announce your deen or get out of town" denies the struggles converts like myself face when we first enter the religion. You have to give converts TIME to solidify their FAITH and acquire the proper KNOWLEDGE. I think you need to watch the lecture "Winning Our Children Back to Islam" on our channel. By the way, the Q&A link you referenced is not directed to converts.

The deen is "difficult to practice" just about anywhere! Many women cannot enter a masjid in some so-called "Muslim" countries. Or drive a car or leave their houses with their faces exposed. By default if you are practicing TRUE Islam according to the Qur'an & Sunnah you'll have difficulty at times no matter where you are. But again, with education, patience & persistence hearts can change (by Allah's permission) and situations can change too! You seem to eager to throw in the towel & move away!

There is no such a thing as American, French, Saudi, Turkish, Indonesian, British....Islam. There is Islam in America, Saudi Arabia, UK, etc etc etc. Islam is one and same for all, countries and peoples are the ones who need to tend to its practice, not the other way round. Islam doesn't have a passport, people do and as such they need to take a hard look at what one says and what the other does and pray so our passports never ask us to choose, for Allah doesn't, on the contrary a good muslim is an even better citizen. He didn't say anything about praying differently; he said praying secretly. Also, you might not know the meaning of fiqh; fiqh means law. Different laws apply to different people. The law mentioned in the video applies to the specific lady with her issue. You might not like 'Imaam Suhaib... good for you. I don't know 'Imaam Suhaib that well, as you may have incorrectly opined while reading my comment, but find a real argument!

WHERE did you get the idea that praying to Allaah in a dirty place is equivalent to polytheism (shirk)? Also, 'Imaam Maalik was NOWHERE NEAR being a MUSHRIK. You do not need to change your name. The names chosen by the new converts was the same names for Sahaba before they became Muslims. Likewise there is no dress code for Muslim. I must say that the Arab and Pakistani dress adopted by the new converts is absurd to say the least. No verse in the Holy Quraan made any reference to such minor issues. Keep your name. Keep your dress. Changing them is not part of Islam.

in Islam with regard to the places where it is forbidden to pray, such as graveyards and washrooms, it was narrated in a saheeh report that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “All of the earth is a mosque, apart from graveyards and washrooms.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, al-Salaah, 291; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 262). It was also narrated that it is forbidden to pray in the places where camels sit, and other places where there is evidence (daleel) to say that it is forbidden to pray in them. don't try to create an American Islam.........there is nothing called "Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do" when it comes to PRAYER. we perform prayers only for ALLAH...........and can't do where we think suitable.

My teacher also said that it's better to avoid toilet and graveyard as place of Shalat. Except in the case of emergency (nowhere else) and to hidde your faith (in danger situation) I wonder why this seems unfamiiliar.

Munawwer Mohamed You need to realize a couple of things: 1) the fatwa is only applicable to that person (the lady asking the question) and not for the masses; 2) Sheikh Suhaib clearly mentioned that the Maliki Fiqh allows it due to the necessity; in fact scholars from other schools of Fiqh have allowed this as well due to the extreme hardship and possible persecution if the person was to pray in front of his or her non-Muslim siblings and relatives. In modern time, Ibn Baaz - former Grand Mufti of Saudia - was asked the same question and he allowed it as a last resort - as an exception, not as a rule. Fiqh is intricate and deals with situations individually as well as collectively.
