ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Margot and I am a professional artist and graphic designer. My parents like to joke that I was born with a paintbrush in hand. I started my career after graduating from the renown Parsons School of Design in New York City and spent over 15 years creating and designing for many of the world's top Fortune 500 brands and companies. My painting journey started as a side project and a creative outlet for me to step away from the computer, go back to my "roots" in fine art and to hone my skills as an illustrator and painter. I started posting some of my work on instagram and the rest is history. My work is inspired by all the things that I am passionate about. Ballet, travel, graphic design, color and finding a world of beauty in all facets of everyday life. I hope you'll join me in this KZbin journey as I take you through all the tips, tricks and trade secrets I've gathered throughout the years. I hope I can teach you some of what I know, help you discover your creative voice and I hope you enjoy this Channel!

FYI & audience - my only art traing I had was to cut out block letters when in the 9th grade, while writiong my stories, I wanted to capture its essence in an "illustration" at the end, telling an aquatance, he said, "I can help you," & I found out he had an art degree & visited me 1/week for AM sessions wherein, gee, I can draw & paint... this is helpfu;l oin many ways as I discovered writing my childrens book series, IT IS THE "PICTURE" THAT TELLS THE STORY!

I spent several years watching watercolor videos, purchasing the proper paints, recommended brushes, learning which paper is the ‘best’, and on and on until one day I actually started to paint. So PAINT! Everything you’ve watched is in your head, but the joy of watercolor will be on your paper.

I am going to show this video to my children. My kids love to create art and they all have very different styles. It's hard because I see they all have great talent and potential, especially because they love what they do... that is until they start comparing their creations to their siblings. One child creates very realistic drawings and paintings that are very pretty. Another does rough scenes that are full of movement and you can feel the action even though it's a single still drawing. Another creates stories and draws frames that show characters and their emotions and she's really good at drawing from different angles and zooming in and out. She's severely dyslexic and can't write but she is a visual author. She's probably the hardest on herself though she's the one I can see most likely becoming a professional working artist because she can't stop creating. She never runs out of things to say with her art.

Thank you! My thoughts on many things are drowned out by that inner critic! My dad was a professional artist who graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in the late 1940s. I'm surrounded by - and love - his art. My inner critic says "you'll never be as good as he was" and it's a battle to turn down the volume of that voice as I struggle to learn and to find my own unique style.
@Pointebrush
@Pointebrush 2 жыл бұрын
I think the comparison to other people is such a common obstacle many people face. I have no doubt that your father was a terrific artist. He sounds like someone who really inspires you ❤️ Just remember that every artist is a human being with a unique fingerprint and voice that makes them one of a kind. Not better or worse, just different and how wonderful is it that we’re all unique, right? I’ll be doing a video about finding your style soon so hopefully that might also help a little too 😉

@@Pointebrush I'll look forward to that video! My dad would not want me to wrap myself into his style. Sad thing is that he had a massive stroke in 1994 at age 67. Affected his art/creative center and he couldn't paint again. Needed 24/7 care mom and I provided. I wrote this because he didn't lose his technical knowledge. I wish I'd had the energy then to paint and ask him questions. It would have kept him involved. He died 13 years later. Caregiving is exhausting which is the death of creativity. (plus I also worked full-time).

Thank you your encouraging words, Margot. I have had so many disruptions over the summer, that it has been difficult to get back into my art at this time. And when I had, I was either lost for ideas or I wasn't happy with the out comes of my work. I try to tell myself that it's only a season and hopefully when the autumn arrives, I can have regular sessions/practise again.

This really fits in with my thoughts on photorealism and art. What's the point of making a painting that is basically a photographic representation of something? Centuries ago, there was a point because there was no photography, but that no longer applies today when you can just take a photo. I don't subscribe to the idea that every picture has to have some deep meaning or story behind it either. Why can't it just be that I enjoyed playing with colour that pleased me or capturing something you see in a scene, person or object that appeals to you? I liked what I saw therefore I painted it accentuating the bits that most appealed to me?

Thanks for the reassurance! I spent so much money on expensive markers and acrylic paints and barely used any of it. I ended up falling in love with a simple Sharpie and a little watercolor set. I knew I loved the look and feel of a Sharpie but I kept telling myself that it’s not a “real” art supply so I wasted a lot of time and money searching for what I already had 😅

I've been struggling for years thinking that my art and myself are just not good enough. This is very helpful. Another problem I have is understanding what I want to say with my art afraid no one will ever want to look at an original idea of mine. This is very helpful as we all look at the world around us differently and it often feels like we're forced into molds to accommodate the social norms of our time. Thank you and much respect for your artistic talent and for sharing.

I'm new to watercolor but it's always always been a medium that intrigued me. I've been watching videos about them for days and days especially your videos and Ian Fennely videos and you both have the same message and I appreciate you so much for this. I am proficient in pencil and colored pencil so I tried watercolored pencils but they just aren't as loose or whimsical as I light in a watercolor so I invested in some watercolors and brushes and good paper and I think j can do something interesting that shows my own personal style. Wish me luck.

Margot you have a wonderful spirit. I’m an intermediate amateur artist, and yes imposter syndrome is real! However, my mother makes me feel like a real artist ☺️. She recently framed some of my paintings: a pineapple, a red pepper (funny how you used that in your video), and a pear. She even showed people! It’s very interesting that the drawings of the peppers in the video although were technically well done and were a clone of one another, were not my cup of tea. I like clean line drawings, with very little to no shading, almost as if the drawing is ready to be painted or colored in. Thank you for an interesting video!
@Pointebrush

Glad you liked the video! Imposter syndrome never leaves you. It's the shadow that follows every creative person who puts their work out there for the world to see 😉 It's wonderful that you have someone close to you who supports you and believes in you! And one of the things I love most about art is that no matter what anyone out there claims, there is no right or wrong way. The beauty is really in the eye of the beholder and we as artists have the power to make all these wonderful choices that make us unique!

At 4:46, oh this is so awesome and for me: I feel like you "have to say something". It is really unique style. And above all the struggles I have with the whole techincal stuff - I struggle the most to find my own style. I admire the styles of other so much and I am just a hobby artist and doing everything for fun, not to make out a live of it. But to find my own style did not happened. I don´t know which way leads to that. I am constantly learning how to paint, how to approach different things. I know NOW, that I like wet on wet the most for example. And this took me almost 2 years to realize. With this I think I will be in my sixtees when I find my style. Until then I will just have fun to copy all this wonderful artists. :-) Thank you very much. I really enjoy your videos, experience and advice. Wishing you the best and hopping to see you allthough I know (as mummy) that your world will change soon. 🙂
